Olpr. Leather Goods Co. Pocket Moleskine Journal Cover- $29

In studying the lives of great men, I’ve noticed a common trait: they were all consistent journal writers. I, myself, consider myself an avid and consistent journal writer.

My grandpa kept a journal his entire life. His journal was quite simple. He just kept a small notebook in his pocket of his shirt and jotted down a short description of the things he did and the people he did it with. This is something he did pretty much every day for his entire life.

Whether or not you want your future grandkids to read it or you just want an attractive piece to store some notes or important information, I loved giving these leather journal covers as groomsmen gifts to my brothers. I do believe that our grandkids will get a kick out of the fact that we once had to go into a shop to rent movies or that phones used to have cords attached to them.

About Olpr. Leather Goods Co.

Olpr. Leather Goods Co. is a small family business, started in Ukraine. All of the items are made to order, but they also have a showroom in the workshop where the customers can come and choose something from stock.
One day, Viktor, the company’s tailor, decided to sew the kind of wallet he had always wanted—a simple pocket wallet with a straight seam. It was so well made that he sold it the next day. He made another; he sold another. Soon, we were making leather goods for all of their friends. Their goods became so popular that they were invited to the arts markets. They sold everything they made. They had found their calling—creating leather goods.
The Internet gave Olpr. the exciting opportunity to sell their goods outside Ukraine. They could share their passion all over the world. But the distance caused a problem-shipping to the U. S. could take up to a month. That was not the type of service they wanted to provide, so they moved to North Carolina to be closer to their many American friends who value the handmade leather products.

Construction

All of the leathers used are the full-grain cowhides sourced from Horween tannery. High grade thread comes in several different colors.

The pocket sized cover measures 3.5″ x 5.5″ and fits the small Moleskine hardcover journal.

Products can be customized with the colorful stitching and personalization. Olpr. Leather Goods Co. offers two types of personalization – the embossing and laser engraving.

Function

This leather journal is perfect for that everyday carry item for your briefcase, car or just to carry around with you without having a larger sized journal. The back flap has a perfect cut seam to fit the elastic holder in place. The front and back inside flaps can also serve as perfect places for loose papers, receipts or cards.

Aesthetic

Each leather offered for this journal cover is as rich and beautiful as they come. They smell great too! Although only a month old, My journal is getting some nice wear, ‘beauty marks’ and patina. I suspect it will look really stunning and weathered in the years to come.

Conclusion

At $29 this pocket sized journal cover is well worth the money given the materials used and the handmade nature. As another famous man once said, ‘One cannot put a price on a journal for the text and contents of one’s journal is priceless’. Believe me when I say, the contents of my journal will surely exceed the amount the journal and cover originally costed. Check them out -here-.

Why do People Need Leather Tools? What Kind of DIY Projects Require the Use of Leather Tools?

Leather tools have a whole host of specific jobs. Some tools are designed for cutting, whereas others serve as chisels, and some to bevel edges. While these seem very specific to leather crafting workshops, you’ll find tools similar to these in woodworking workshops too.

Beveling tools can be used to create more rounded edges of tables and other types of furniture, while rotating saws are similar to the rotating blades found in leather crafting. If you’re looking to punch holes through fabric, you’ll need a leather punch - a great tool for any workshop that may need to work with leather fabrics.

In the household, you may find you need a punch for making a new hole in a leather belt or for fixing a handle back on to a handbag. Equally, you may find that leather cutting tools are great for neatly trimming peeling back leather from couches or on clothing.

For those with antique leather furniture, you know you need to polish and oil it to ensure it stays healthy. However, what do you do if the leather starts to fray?

A burnisher can be used to prevent fraying on your sofa, maintaining and preserving it. You can also use it to prevent fraying on sleeves of leather clothing and on the bottom of handbags.

What are the Most Common Types of Leather Tools?

There are many tools used for different effects, especially as you become more of an expert in leather crafting. The basic tools, however, are not only useful to a leatherworker but also in an everyday workshop or even your home.

  • Edge Bevelers - These are for Rounding Out Edges of Leather for a Softer Look
  • Rotary Cutter - A Rotating Blade That Cuts Leather
  • Round Knife - Tool Used for Cutting and Skiving
  • Diamond Chisel - This Chisel Punches Holes All the Way Through the Leather
  • Stitch Awl - Used to Create Holes for Stitching and Widening Those Holes, if Necessary
  • Groover and Creaser - These Tools Cut and Widen a Channel in the Leather, Making it Easier to Stitch
  • Burnisher - To Remedy Frayed Edges
  • Stitching Needles and Horse - The Horse Holds the Leather and the Needles are for Sewing Leather Specifically
  • Punches and Hammer - Used for Punching Holes in the Leather

What is the Best Way to Store Leather Tools?

Storing your leather correctly will keep it supple and durable. When leather is stored incorrectly, it becomes stiff and unmovable, making it nearly impossible to work with. Moreover, when stored badly, the leather starts to become brittle, flaky, and dry, which results in a poor-quality finished product.

Instead, when leather is stored well and correctly, it is flexible, soft-to-the-touch, and durable. It won’t develop a bad smell and will remain easy to work with.

Try to prevent wrinkles by laying leather flat or hanging it. Hanging it with acid-free paper will help to keep it in a neutral state - just like how our own skin likes the atmosphere.

Leather is breathable, so think about ensuring that fresh air can get through it. Stale musty air will sit in the material and degrade the leather. If the storage place has fungus, dampness, and/or mold can get into the leather if you are not careful.

Store in a cool, dry place that has a flow of air coming through. Make sure that there isn’t a chance of dampness and that the leather won’t get wet, which can cause it to rot. That said, you don’t want the air to be too dry at the same time, as this will dehydrate the leather.

Remember if you have a lot of leather to store, you can always contact a professional leather storage company.

Are Leather Tools Easy to Use? Do You Need Specific Skills or Training to Use Leather Tools?

While leather tools don’t need any specific training to use, watching a few training videos to come to grips with the techniques will be useful. Many of the tools are sharp, so understanding their purpose and where to apply them will give you a leg up.

Stitch Awl - You can use a stitch awl for making holes in leather, which is great for extending belt loops and lace holes. You need to put the pointed end against the leather and flex the leather back over the awl while pushing it through. This creates the hole. You can also use this when you need to stitch something to leather.

Bevel - If you have an item of leather clothing with a rough edge, you can use a bevel to give it a softer, curved edge. This is particularly useful for a handbag edge that rubs against your arm or leather trousers. Dampen the leather first as this makes it easier, and run the bevel slowly and smoothly along the edge of the leather.

Round Knife - A round knife is a great guide for anyone sewing fabrics, not just leather. You can use the knife to press into the fabric to show where you need to stitch and to make the process easier. Just press and rock the knife back and forth and then move it along.

Punch and Hammer - If you are looking to make larger holes, you may need to use a punch and a hammer. This may be true if you are looking to hang leather on a rod, for example. Lay the leather flat on a surface and position the punch. Slowly and firmly tap the punch on the top with the hammer.

What Makes Leather Tools Good/ Sturdy/ Durable/ Valuable?

Leather tools are designed to last a long time. They are made from industry-strength metals such as steel and iron and are usually bound in hardwoods or durable plastics. The tools tend to last longer when they are more expensive and have wooden housing over cheaper plastic casings.

That said, higher prices don’t necessarily pertain to good quality. Look for tools that are made by brands with a  good reputation, and consider reviews when making a purchase. Equally, a long guarantee or warranty shows a company’s faith in its product, ensuring the quality of the components that make up the tools.

Leather tools last longer if they are maintained. They need to be cleaned frequently and polished to ensure that none of the oils from the leather leave residue on the tools. You should also make sure you sharpen all blades. If they are kept clean, tools should last at least ten years and should work perfectly the whole time.

How to Choose the Best Leather Tools for Your Needs?

When you’re choosing leather tools, it's not a one-size-fits-all solution. While there are basic tools that most people start out with, your particular requirements will determine the tools you will need to purchase.

Firstly, try to think about the job at hand. Is this is a one-off leather job or are you considering taking up leather work as a hobby? If this is a simple job, you only want a cheap set of tools to get the job done. If you’re looking to progress in leather work, you want a durable beginner’s set, which will last as you learn and use them for practice.

Secondly, think about your budget. While higher priced tools tend to be of better quality, we can’t all afford to splurge endlessly. Think about how much you can afford to spend and look for something in that price bracket.

Consider the materials. Wooden and metal tools are more durable and tend to not break as easily. Plastic can smash on the floor or break if stepped on and tends to become brittle over time. Wooden tools are also easier on the hands.

Look at reviews online, as people who have had bad experiences tend to let the world know. Look for the issues with any products and keep an eye out for leather tools which specifically mention your requirements.

SALT Co. 3.5″ Leather Briefcase Review – $649

The classic leather briefcase. The gentleman’s staple. SALT Co’s 3.5″ Leather Briefcase embodies the best aspects of a formal brief while maintaining a humble look. Salt Co’s offering utilizes a unique stiff frame and is built to last. This impressively understated briefcase will serve its owner better and better over a lifetime of use.

About SALT Co.

Short for Standard Artisan Leather Trading Company, SALT Co. recently began operations based out of Salt Lake City, Utah. Their approach is to make products that maintain the feeling of old-world, handcrafted items, but updated to meet the needs of today’s electronic-heavy world. SALT Co. aims to make items that are beautiful simply because they’re solely designed for function: “It has been said that if you eliminate everything that is not essential you will end up with something that truly is.”

Discrete, minimal logos are used on Salt Co. products

Currently the majority of SALT’s products are leather bags, but their catalog is always expanding. Even beyond leather–for example, they’ve recently listed a collection of premium wood valet stands.

If many of SALT Co’s leather products look familiar, that’s because they’ve hired Kendal, of the former Kendal & Hyde, to design for them. Many of his most popular designs are now available from SALT Co!

Leather & Construction

It might surprise you to learn that this formal briefcase is also built like an absolute tank.

Salt Co. utilizes thick, full-grain, vegetable tanned leather, and plenty of it. A simple way to know you’re getting quality leather is to ensure it’s a known tan from an established tannery. However, this isn’t the only way to get awesome leather. Salt Co. takes a more particular route, custom ordering leather that is tanned to their own specifications for strength and appearance. The result is fantastic. The leather is tough, beautiful, feels great, and has one of the best leather smells I’ve experienced!

The design of the bag exudes sturdy, lifelong function. They’ve employed several frequently overlooked build techniques. Rivets are placed such that stress comes sideways, rather than directly pulling apart the connection. The two primary closure straps extend all the way around the bag as a single piece, not short strips of leather sewn to the outside of the bag. A thick leather edge extending past the bottom of the brief protects these straps and the bottom of the bag from rubbing against the floor. This is the kind of stuff that separates a good bag from a truly great bag.

Thick, protruding edges protect and stabilize the bottom of the brief

It’s all expertly put together, too. A visual inspection reveals no issues with stitching or riveting. Stitching is uniform and reinforced with several passes and/or rivets at stress points. Thread is kept to a relative minimum, favoring large single pieces of leather. This means fewer points for wear and failure over time. The only place I’d have preferred an additional rivet is on the shoulder strap connection points. A single rivet is sufficient (especially with the stress-relieving design), but, as a primary load-bearing point, two would provide extra confidence.

Uniform stitches and stress-relieved rivet

Overall this bag is built well with quality materials that will last a lifetime. If any issues do come up, Salt Co. offers a lifetime guarantee.

Function

The SALT Co. Brief is a laptop and document type bag, and is ideal for a simple daily carry. I carry my 13″  laptop, charging cable, wallet, a couple small EDC items, pens, a few documents, and a camera (with pancake lens) or small water bottle without issue. I can throw a spare lens in one of the pockets as well, but should point out this is possible partially because I have a small mirrorless camera. This professional briefcase is well organized.

A single wide strip of leather is sewn over the bottom of the main gusset. This gives the briefcase a partially stiff frame, placing it somewhere between a hard attache and a soft leather briefcase. The footprint is stable and allows the brief to stand on its own without wobble. This is really appreciated if you’re used to a soft brief that needs to be balanced or leaned against something.

Stands well even on carpet

There is one drawback to using this amount of thick leather: weight. It’s tough enough to last forever, but all that leather comes in at about 6.4lb (2.9kg). I’ve had larger briefcases that weigh less. While an extra pound or two may not seem like much, it can wear on you after a long day. This is something to consider based on your use case and body type.

The sturdy carry strap is made well to alleviate this extra weight. The pad is full leather, strong enough to distribute weight evenly across your shoulder. The underside is unfinished leather which minimizes slipping.

Aesthetic

Understated: “presented or expressed in a subtle and effective way.” This is the best word I can come up with to describe the appearance of the Salt Co. Brief. Lines are strong and well defined. No extra details are added for the sake of appearance. It’s beautiful because of its simplicity.

The leather itself is consistent with this theme. From even a few feet away, it appears to be a simple natural tan colored leather. But if you get up close, you’ll see that this tan has a certain translucent quality that makes the grain very visible. Unfortunately I found this difficult to capture in photographs!

My review bag is Salt Co’s ‘whiskey’ color. A darker and more brown option, ‘cafe,’ is also available. Note that a new ‘whiskey’ bag will come with a lighter color than mine. This is because my bag has developed patina from use and treatment.

Conclusion

The Salt Co. 3.5″ Leather Briefcase is a top-of-the-line Buy It For Life product. It’s tough, it’s professional, it’s beautiful. A fantastic choice for a minimal everyday laptop carry. While expensive it’s a good value and the right price for a bag of this caliber. This would make a great choice for a professional looking for their last briefcase or as an heirloom level gift. You’ll be just as impressed with this brief as I am.

Why Do You Need a Car Seat Protector?

Cars are expensive, valuable tools we use in our everyday lives. In our families, we rely on having a tip top machine to work fluidly throughout our everyday lives. In this sense, we need to preserve the components that make up our cars to make sure it has the longest lifespan it can muster.

This attitude should extend to the car seats. When we sit on our car seats, regardless of whether they’re leather or fabric, we cause wear and tear. This can come in the form of small rips in the leather or as dirt and grime embedded in the fabric. Those of us with kids certainly understand the dangers of sticky probing fingers and sharp car seat edges.

Ripped Leather Car Seat (Source)

While cleaning and conditioning the surfaces can certainly help to preserve them, many cleaning products have harsh chemicals that can degrade the leather over time by removing the natural oils. Equally, the scrubbing action can wear away at the material.

In this regard, consider how a car seat protector for leather seats will help to keep them looking fresh. With no dirt and grime smeared on the leather, you’ll prevent microabrasions. With no keys digging into the soft fabric, you won’t tear the seats. With a lining between your kids and the car seats, you won’t end up with syrup in the seams.

Instead, car seat protectors for leather seats provide an exceptional physical barrier to safeguard from harm to the material. This stops you having to shell out money to have them repaired, cuts down on maintenance, and doesn’t decrease the value of the car.

Things to Consider When Choosing a Car Seat Protector

Material Used: When it comes to leather seat covers, you want something that is functional and comfortable. In this sense, look for a quality material that is thick and therefore durable. Equally, make sure that it has some form of cushion, made from soft material, to ensure a pleasurable experience. While you may opt for leather seat covers, you can also opt for covers that are made from faux leather and soft plastics. These are a bit more durable and easily wipeable.

Design: When it comes to design, your car seat protector should be aesthetically pleasing, as well as functional. There are some great designs which have different colors and patterns, and mold more elegantly to the seat. However, if you are putting a car seat protector in to preserve the leather from a child’s car seat, you may need something wide and flat, that is more easily portable and can fold away for storage.

Child-friendly: When you’re lugging children around, the last thing you need is a car seat protector that needs complicated installation. Choose something easy to whip out and that lays down without hassle. Moreover, consider the safety of the mat when it comes to kids’ seats. Make sure it doesn’t slide around and ensure you can safely attach a child’s car seat without the protective mat interfering.

Washable: One of the most beautiful things about car seat protectors is that you can clean them to keep the car looking nice. If you are prone to carrying dirty loads in your car or have small kids, you’ll want something easily washable. Check the label for washing instructions. Machine-washable car seat protectors make the whole job a lot easier.

Price: Car seat protectors won’t break the bank but they do range in cost. This usually refers to the quality of the item, with more expensive models priced at around $30-$40, while you can pick up cheaper protectors for $15 a piece. Consider that the price is usually reflective of their ability to protect, their versatility, and their durability. That said, cheaper models are not necessarily bad. To get a better idea, always look at the reviews; what may be a curse to someone, may be a blessing to you - it can depend on your needs.

Warranty: Also check for a warranty. While car seat protectors aren't that expensive, it would be annoying if they rip the first time you use them and you can’t get a dollar back. In this sense, check to see what the return policy is and whether they have a warranty in case of damages or dissatisfaction.

This lightweight, foldable model is cheap and easy to install. It can fold away and be stored without taking up much room and provides a quick anti-slip mat for children’s car seats.

Brica Seat Guardian Car Seat Protector

  • Material is Designed to be Stain Resistant
  • One-Piece Design and Simple and Easy to Install
  • Traction Technology Stops the Mat from Slipping
  • Large Size Protects the Seat from Children Kicking in Rear-Facing Seats
  • Material is Durable and is Colored Using Dye That Won’t Run onto the Leather

Cons

  • Heavy Car Seats Can Disfigure the Rubber Feet on the Bottom of the Mat

Bottom Line

Not only is this mat nice to look at, but it also has great anti-slip tech incorporated in the design and can protect large seats. Heavy children’s car seats aren’t good for it, however, as they reduce the lifetime of the product and its ability to prevent the seat from slipping and sliding.

Conclusion

If you want your leather car seats looking shiny and brand new forever, you need to take measures to protect them. Dirt and grime from everyday wear and tear will reduce the sheen of your leather over time without you even noticing. What’s more, when you add kids, pets, and unwary visitors into the mix, you’ll find keys scratches on the leather, glue in the cracks, and dog hair in the seams.

Having read about some of the best car seat protectors on the scene, you now have an idea why leather lives best when it's looked after. Make sure to consider your lifestyle when you choose a care set protector, and try to fit high-quality into your budget, as well as easy maintenance and installation.

Reviews of The Best Leather Glues

Crafting with leather is an inspirational thing. There’s something both nostalgic and animalistic about it, while also feeling luxurious and classy. For hardened crafters, it is no secret that working with leather is a hard job. A tough material with a lot of give, leather needs to be worked in a particular way for the best results.

That said, everyone needs to cut corners from time to time and employing leather glue can certainly ease up on all that stress. However, not all leather glues are made equal and a poor-quality glue will leave a sticky mess and poor results.

We’re here to present a guide that outlines the best leather glues out there and their pros and cons. That way, you won’t end up in a sticky situation!

What are the types of glues for leather?

When you’re looking for glues, you’re going to find that either contact adhesive or spray-on adhesive work best for leather. These differentiating names define how the glues are applied, not what is in them as such. The contact adhesive works by smearing a little of the glue on to the leather. Next, you smear a little on to the surface to which the leather is going to be stuck. You hold this for a few seconds as the glue fuses to itself, causing it to harden and stick.

Spray-on adhesive means you can more easily apply it by spraying both surfaces and holding them together. You need to make sure that you are spraying the adhesive at least three inches away from the surface, to ensure you get good coverage without blasting the leather.

That said, the type of glue you need specifically can depend on a few different factors. The material to which you are gluing your leather is a big point of contention. If you are gluing leather to wood, you may prefer a contact cement, whereas leather to leather adhesion can work with an all-purpose shoe adhesive substance.

When attaching leather to metal or plastic, you’re usually better with a contact cement, however, you must score the plastic or the metal using wire wool to give it a coarse surface. This allows the leather to stick more easily.

Choosing the Best Leather Glue

When you’re choosing the best glue for leather, you need to determine if it is the right glue for the job. First look at the instructions to determine whether this glue is good for both leather and the material to which you are sticking the leather.

When you’re shopping around for glue, however, this isn’t the only thing to look for as there are many types of glue that will cover the materials you are using. In this sense, how do you decide between them?

Gorilla Super Glue Gel (Source)

Firstly, most people look at the price. White leather glue isn’t expensive, while top-quality glues will cost a fraction more. These tend to be more adhesive, less annoyingly sticky to the skin, easy to work with, and hold their adhesion over time. You are looking for a glue which will be simple to use and will hold over a long period of time. Looking at reviews of products will help you to determine this for each of the glues you see.

Quick-drying glues are always easier to use as well. The problem with slow-drying glue is that it can collect dust and grime while it dries, the leather may move, and the glue may seep out the sides.

Equally, some leather glues have a tacky finish. If your glue has a tacky finish, it tends to collect dust over time.

Tips on Gluing Leather to Other Materials

Understanding how to glue leather is only half the battle, as the different material to which you may be sticking the leather to will determine your technique. Below is a list of a few tips for sticking leather to different kinds of fabrics and materials.

Plastic

  • Score - Mark the plastic first as this creates a coarse surface. This increases surface area and friction and makes it easier for the leather to stick.

  • Clean and Dry - Make sure to clean the plastic with alcohol to remove all oils and grime. You also need to dry the plastic. This ensures the leather definitely sticks to the plastic and not debris or dirt.

  • Be Patient - Leather to plastic gluing can take up to four hours to dry so leave it to work its magic without interference.

Fabric

  • Wipe With Dry Cloth - You want the material to be free of debris, otherwise, the glue sticks to the debris and not the fabric.

  • Dry is Key - The material must be dry otherwise the water will prevent the glue from sticking to both surfaces. Equally, you want the glue to soak into the fabric and water particles block the space for the glue if the material is wet.

  • Press for Two Minutes - When gluing, hold the fabrics together for two minutes as fabric can take a long time to dry.

  • Keep Off Surfaces - As the glue may seep out the fabric, don’t put it down on to other soft furnishings, otherwise, it may stick to unintended areas.

Metal

  • Keep it Clean - Like the other materials, always clean metal first. If it is rusty, try to remove as much of the rust dust as possible. Leather will adhere to rust but it may crumble off in the future.

  • Score it - Like the plastic, you need to mark the metal to give a coarse surface as leather struggles to stick to smooth, even surfaces.

  • Check for air - Air bubbles will cause the leather to peel away if the metal warms up in the summer. The air expands inside the bubble and pushes the glue outward. Make sure to squeeze out all the air bubbles.

Wood

  • Sand, Clean, and Score - Sand the surface first to remove any peeling varnish that may come off, taking the leather with it. Next wipe the wood down with a dry cloth and score the wood to give the rough plane.

  • Contact Cement - Contact cement is best for wood and should be applied directly to the roughed up side of the wood.

  • Vice and Protect - Keeping the leather and wood in a good grip will help to prevent movement and secure the glue. However, make sure the vice doesn’t mark the leather by placing a wad of material between the leather and the vice.

Conclusion

Leather is a beautiful material with all the benefits of its naturalness. Strong, flexible, durable, versatile, and forgiving, leather really can spruce up furniture, clothing, accessories and soft furnishings. However, when applying glue, you can ruin the leather if you don’t know what you’re doing and end up selecting the wrong product.

With this in mind, check out the pros and cons and understand what you’re looking at in a product. Moreover, consider your own intentions, how you’re applying the leather glue, and the final product. Be aware of the time it needs to dry as some of these glues aren’t designed for quick projects!

How Do You Repair Leather?

Durable as it is, leather experiences wear and tear as much as any material. However, unlike other materials, leather is expensive to replace and a little more tricky to hide the damage. Leather repair kits can help to fix the many issues that might become prominent on your leather furniture and clothing.

For cuts and tears, leather repair kits can help you to fix the gap. You do this by patching to cover up the hole and smoothing over the repair site.

For abrasions and scratches, leather repair kits allow you to smooth the surface and color the scratch to hide it from sight. These kits will allow you to polish and wax out scratches as well as hiding them with dyes.

Moreover, if you are experiencing cracking in your leather, repair kits contain compounds that allow you to fill in the cracks, while oiling the leather to restore its moisture, flexibility, and elasticity.

When it comes to burns, such as cigarette burns, leather repair kits will help you to remove the excess burnt leather, fill in the hole, and cover this over to blend in with the original leather. That way you can restore both the texture and the coloring.

What Does a Leather Repair Kit Contain?

A leather kit is designed to tackle all kinds of issues with leather. In this sense, you’re looking for a leather repair kit with as many accessories as possible if you want to cover broad spectrum damage, or kits with large quantities of repair items for your specific need - say, a tear or a burn hole.

Typically, leather repair kits come with between 10 and 25 pieces, which usually include the materials and tools needed for repair. You’re likely to find alcohol wipes and cloths for cleaning the leather, sandpaper and grain paper for preparation, leather adhesive and application swabs, backing fabrics and leather samples for patching, paints and dyes for recoloring, sponges, mixing tools and bowls, brushes, dye pens, and instructions.

These items come in varying quantities and in different styles. Some kits may include glue pens and glue guns, whereas others may include liquid glue. Leather adhesives range from tubes of glue to sticky patches, while backing fabrics and leather samples vary in colors.

Make sure to choose a kit that matches your colorings of paints, dyes, backing fabrics, and leather samples. Equally, if it is your first time, make sure to have extra cleaning materials and surplus application tools.

Do Leather Repair Kits Really Work?

Now while leather repair kits are designed to fix leather, it is important to remember a few things.

  1. Perfectionists won’t always be happy - A leather repair kit will not restore your leather back to how it looked before. This is not a miracle solution. However, it will enable you to apply techniques that blend damage into the leather to help hide it.

  2. Not all kits are good quality - Read the reviews from each kit as they contain different products, as well as being of different efficacy levels. Not all glue is as easy to work with, while not all repair patches fit well.

  3. They hide damage well - While not perfect, your alternative is to look at damage to your leather constantly. This will blend in and the repair will fade over time as it gets a little grubby. Over a period, you’ll see the repair less and less.

  4. Keep it clean - Sometimes the problem isn’t with the kit but is with the user’s application. The leather must be clean before you apply glue or sticky patches. When we apply these sticky surfaces to grimy leather, the patch sticks to the dirt and not the leather. This results in it peeling off very soon after application.

Leather Repair Tips and Tricks

  1. Clean the Leather First - When we don’t clean the leather first, we stick the adhesive materials to the dirt and grime on the leather. While the leather may look clean after a good vacuum, oils from our clothes and skin leave a residue on the material. These oils create a greasy surface which prevents the patches from sticking effectively. You need to clean the surface with alcohol as this breaks down the oil molecules and fully removes them from the surface. Always remember to let the leather fully dry before applying anything to it. Luckily, alcohol dries very quickly.
  2. Get a Good Look - Assessing the damage is very important to properly repair it. If there is a tear in your leather, does it go through the backing too or just the leather? This will determine how much repair work needs to be done to the leather. This can save you time if you really understand the issue and how to fix it properly. Always read the instructions and look for key indicators of damage that are supplied in these steps. By taking note of the damage, you can deduce which tools and materials are best needed to fix it effectively and permanently.
  3. Choose Quality - When selecting your repair kit, don’t just opt for the lowest priced kit you can find. While this saves you money upfront, you’ll often find that the materials used in the lower priced kits are not top-quality. The glue tends to wear way very quickly or become loose. The leather tends to crack and peel away within a short period of time. In this sense, look for a leather repair kit with great reviews that attest to its longevity and permanence.
  4. Create Traction - When you’re applying repairs to leather, you want them to stick. When we try to stick things to very shiny or smooth surfaces, they often slip around and have trouble gaining purchase. When we sand the leather slightly first, we create a rough surface to work with. This roughness creates a coarse grain in the leather, increasing the surface area of the leather’s edge. This allows the glue to stick in more places (to all the little rough edges), which creates a strong bond.
  5. Don’t Rush it - Some glues are very fast drying and while this decreases the time it takes to repair, it doesn’t give you room for mistakes. Look for glues which give you time to think about the process. Kits that allow a few minutes to dry enable you to rectify mistakes, work slowly and methodically, and adjust anything you’re unhappy about.
  6. Be Thorough - From reading the instructions to assessing the problem properly, make sure to spend time being thorough. Moreover, when applying the glue or the patches, don’t be stingy. Make sure to apply a decent amount of repair materials so the site doesn’t break again quickly. That said, don’t over apply or adhesive will seep from the edges. Always make sure to apply glue to every edge of the leather.

Leather Repair Trick

Conclusion

If you have leather that’s torn, ripped, burnt, or scratched - never fear. With a decent leather repair kit, you’ll be able to restore your leather items. You can use a broad spectrum kit to repair all kinds of problems, from scratches to cuts, and from burns to abrasions.

Equally, kits can restore color and texture. For those with a more specific problem, some kits are more targeted toward cuts or scratches or whatever your need.

Remember to always read the instructions, assess the problem thoroughly, and apply slowly and methodically. Leather is a little less forgiving than other materials, but with a repair kit, you can bring some life back to your leather goods.

What Makes a Good Leather Backpack? Are All Leather Backpacks the Same?

Not all leather backpacks are made equal. As with most modern world commodities, leather backpacks can be of high-quality or low-quality, and the price often reflects this.

When considering a purchase, first look at the materials. You are looking for high-quality leather that’s thick yet moves well. The flexibility of the material will stop it from tearing, while the density will ensure that it can hold a decent amount of weight. Equally, the flexibility means it will be a little more comfortable. Rather than just sitting solidly on your back, a flexible leather backpack will mold to your back and hang without digging in. Ask yourself if it is real leather, whether it is thick enough to be durable for your needs, and whether it has any kind of protection against scrapes and stains.

Next, consider the stitching. Look for double stitching to show strength, using thicker threads and tight machine work. Bad stitching will cause the backpack to unravel. Look closely at the stitching around the top of the backpack by the straps as this is the most vulnerable area. Moreover, consider the stitching around the bottom of the bag. Is it protected from scrapes on the floor?

Also, consider how the straps are made. Those without leather straps may use cotton or fabric straps which are prone to tearing under weight.

The fastenings should also be of high quality. Consider whether they are snap poppers, zips, or buttons. Remember that cheap zippers will get stuck or split, while poor quality buttons can pop off or break in half.

Desirable Features of a Good Leather Backpack

If we’re asking ourselves what we’re looking for in a leather backpack, we can begin to paint a picture of the final product. The important features to look for depend on your lifestyle and what you’re using your bag for.

That said, you should consider the design. The aesthetic appeal of the bag will certainly be what catches your eye. Are you looking for a plain, traditional design that’s low key and matches anything? Perhaps you are looking for a patent leather bag for a little shine and shimmer, or perhaps a glitter painted leather for a little added flair. Have the coloring and design in mind when you begin looking.

P.KU.VDSL Canvas Backpack, AUGUR Series Vintage Leather Rucksack, 17’’ Laptop Backpack, Military Satchel Backpack for Men Women Traveling Hiking

Secondly, think about comfort. If you are carrying heavy loads in your bag, you’ll want wider straps to distribute the weight so they don’t dig into your shoulders. You’ll also want a bag that’s wide to spread the weight across your back. A more structured bag will hold weight better and pockets will allow you to organize the heaviness better.

Next, think about pockets in detail. Do you need some organization inside your backpack? If so, look for a backpack with compartments. Perhaps you like to keep a few things handy, like a wallet, keys, and phone. Pockets on the outside give quick access to your necessities. Some even come with phone holders and money wallets.

Size is important when we consider what we’re taking with us. If we’re carrying school books, a pencil case, binders, and all the other study trimmings, we’ll need something larger. If you commute on public transport, you’ll perhaps want to consider a more compact design.

Other features to look out for include the sturdiness of the zippers, buckles, poppers, and other clasps. If these break off easily, you’ll have a broken bag that won’t shut or you may lose your belongings. Equally, you might want different carry handles. Some leather backpacks can convert to messenger bags or briefcases, appearing more suitable for versatile situations.

For an understanding of the durability of a particular backpack, you can start by looking at reviews online. This should give you an idea of a backpack’s lifespan and how well it holds up under pressure.

What are the Different Types of Leather Backpacks?

The type of leather backpack you’re searching for will be determined by your use of it. If you’re a frequent traveler, you may be looking for a carry-on case for the airplane. If you travel light, flying with only hand luggage to make the journey easier, yet something with enough storage and organized compartments to make sure all your possessions are in order is essential.

Solo Reade 15.6 Inch Vintage Columbian Leather Backpack, Espresso

Or those looking for a school or college bag, you need a durable backpack able to carry heavy loads. You’ll often find these designs to be more traditional in shape with symmetrical features. Designed for school bags, these leather backpacks are usually affordably priced.

Some women hate carrying a purse. Swinging at your side while dancing in nightclubs, afraid that someone will pull it off you in a crowd, and scared of constantly losing it - carrying a purse can be a nightmare. However, a small leather backpack can pop onto your back and be safe at all times. A mini leather backpack is big enough to hold essentials but small enough not to get in the way.

What are the Different Types of Leather Used on Backpacks? What Type of Leather Stands the Test of Time and Survives the Elements?

OK so while some backpacks might proclaim they’re made of leather, not all leather is the same quality. Let’s start by saying that faux leather, show leather, fake leather, imitation leather (and so on) are not real leather. Usually fashioned from synthetic materials, this type of leather does not come from animals at all.

Equally, on the same subject, vegans and eco-warriors can look for some forms of ‘leather’ made from mushrooms. Fungus leather is fast becoming an animal-free alternative.

For those looking at real leather, you’ll find it lasts a long time and is very durable. You either find cow leather or lamb hide in the making of leather backpacks. Now, while both are good quality, the grades can depend on how long the bag will last. Full grain and top grain leathers are the most expensive and best quality. Corrected grain, patent leather, and split leather are of lower quality.

That said, thicker leathers with coarser grains and patent leathers are more resistant to the elements as they can withstand water. Softer leathers, while high quality, are not so durable to wet and cold, and stain easily from dirt, grime, and oil.

Is There a Need to Purchase a Leather Protector/Spray?

Leather comes from a living animal and needs care like our skin. Leather protection sprays work to safeguard leather against the harmful elements in our environment.

Leather protection sprays condition the leather to stop it from getting brittle and dry, saving it from cracking. Secondly, leather protection sprays create a barrier against dirt and grime, which also helps to prevent stains and some abrasions. You may also find that some protective sprays make leather fire retardant.

It is not compulsory to buy a leather protection spray; some backpacks may come with one for free. However, a protection spray will increase the longevity of your leather bag as it stops the leather from wearing away so easily. In this sense, it can save you money on having to purchase a replacement bag so quickly.

Not only does it expand the lifetime of your backpack, but a protection spray will also improve the aesthetic of your bag while you use it. Protection sprays often give the leather a gleam that highlights its cleanliness, while also allowing the leather to stay flexible, for a more comfortable experience.

How to Choose the Best Leather Backpack for Your Needs?

Now when you’re making this choice, it has to come from you. In this sense, no matter the pros and cons, if they’re not related to your life, then they’re irrelevant. For example, a leather backpack with complicated fixtures to stop kids getting in is of no use if you don’t have children.

Ask yourself a few of the following questions:

  1. Is it all about style?
  2. How soft should it be?
  3. Are you tall, short, fat, thin - therefore do you need long or short straps or a wide or narrow bag?
  4. How long should the bag last for?
  5. What will you be carrying in the bag?
  6. How long during each day will you carry your leather backpack?
  7. What is your overall budget and can this be stretched?
  8. Do you need child-proof features?
  9. Are you looking for extra pockets or features such as a money wallet or a phone holder?
  10. Should you buy a protective spray to increase the lifetime of the bag?

Conclusion

A leather backpack will certainly serve you well as a durable and timeless vessel for carrying your goods. Whether you're hiking at the weekends or carrying a heavy laptop to work, leather has the strength to hold it together, and the flexibility to still provide you comfort. Consider what you’re carrying, any back ailments you may have, and any extra pockets you made need. Always check the zippers and the stitching and look out for adjustable and padded straps. You don’t need to splash out a great deal of money, but understand that not all leather is of the same quality, so the better quality you are seeking, expect to pay more money - but you’ll be rewarded with a far longer lifespan.

Leather in the interior of a vehicle is meant to last a lifetime if well maintained. For light to medium levels of dirt and soil, a highly-rated leather cleaner will do the trick. While some people are quick to purchase a leather conditioner, proper cleaning is all that is truly needed in keeping your car's leather luxurious.

The Benefits of Using a Leather Car Cleaner

The upholstery in a vehicle is either pigmented, aniline, or semi-aniline. In addition, all leather in vehicles is coated with a synthetic clear coating. Therefore, it is more pertinent to clean your leather interior rather than to condition it.

Dirt and other objects can cause scratches and wear on your car's leather, leading to a shiny appearance and exposure to the leather hide underneath. Grime, grease, body sweat, and dust can get trapped in the pores and crevices of leather. Using a cleaner with protectants will help reduce abrasion and increase sun fade resistance.

Regular vacuuming will help reduce the mess and overall wear on the upholstery in a vehicle. From there, applying a highly-rated leather car cleaner to the interior will help maintain its quality and longevity.

We're helping you keep the luxe in the luxury of your vehicle's interior by searching for the best leather cleaners. Continue reading for our list of the top five leather car cleaners on the market today.

What Makes a Good leather Steering Wheel Cover? Are All Leather Steering Wheel Covers the Same?

When you're looking for a steering wheel cover, you need to think about more than just price. The price can help you to understand the quality of the product, but also stops you from exploring your own requirements and differentiating between the covers.

Firstly, consider the material. Better quality leather is more expensive but it will protect your steering wheel better. This is because it is denser, doesn’t scratch or wear easily, is very durable, and lasts a long time.

Secondly, look for a steering wheel cover that is designed for comfort. Some have grooves cut into the design for your hands to fit, while others are smoother or skin-tight for a narrower grip. Other leather steering wheel covers are padded, which provides extra comfort for your hands but may be an issue if you have small hands.

You should also think about the seams. While some have fancy seam designs, sometimes these can rub on your palms while you are driving, causing sore skin and calluses on your hands.

Think about the overall look you are going for. You will want to search for a leather cover that matches the interior of your car, while some are personalizable and include patterns or textures to improve the feel and look of your car.

What Kind of Leather is Typically Used on Leather Steering Wheel Covers?

Steering wheel covers tend to use harder types of leather that have a more durable finish. Soft leather is nice to touch but would wear away quickly on a steering wheel. Also, because there is regular skin contact, the oils from your skin destroy softer leather, so tough, durable leather is necessary.

Some types of leather (Source)

Full-grain or top-grain leather are the most expensive types of leather for steering wheel covers but they are also the most durable. Very shiny and dense, these leathers tend to keep their appearance, are harder to the touch, and are less flexible.

Nubuck, split, and bonded leather are cheaper options because they’re mixes of softer leather and other materials, reconstituted to be either. While they’re cheaper, they don’t last as long - especially on a steering wheel that deals with a lot of body oils and dirt.

The Benefits of Using a Leather Steering Wheel Cover

While steering wheels appear to be covered in leather some of the time, often this is a cheap imitation or low-grade leather. Alternatively, steering wheels are made of plastics.

Without a steering wheel cover, the steering wheel gets dirty. Constant touching from your hands leaves oil and grime on the wheel which cakes into the material and plastic, staining it over time and discoloring the wheel. This drops the value of the car as it looks worn and tired. To avoid this, a steering wheel cover will take the brunt of the dirt and oils.

Well worn steering wheel (Source)

This is also applicable to real tangible damage. Older steering wheels especially were made from strange foam that easily got bumps, scratches, and holes in it. Steering wheel covers protect against this and keep the wheel in one piece.

Also, for those traveling on long journeys or commuting frequently, leather steering wheel covers increase comfort and an ergonomic design can help to enhance your experience, prevent back problems, and increase blood flow to the brain. In this sense, a steering wheel cover can provide padded placement for your hands, to relieve stress from the wrists, hands, arms, and back. Moreover, the softer touch can prevent calluses on your hands.

Steering wheel covers are also engineered to improve the look of your car. Available in a wide range of colors, designs, and textures, steering wheel covers bring a touch of class to the car.

How Will a Leather Steering Wheel Cover Stand up to Water, Messy Hands, Sweat?

Steering wheel covers are engineered specifically to stand up to wear and tear and protect your steering wheel from receiving this treatment.

In general, steering wheel covers are made from tough, high-quality leather and are therefore mostly waterproof. Similarly to hiking boots, while the material is a little porous, the cover can protect from soda spills, coffee stains, and water damage.

Secondly, your steering wheel cover is taking all the dirt and grime from your hands that would usually go on your wheel. While it may not be visible to the naked eye, small amounts of dirt build up over time, so a steering wheel cover protects the wheel from being subject to all this grime.

Leather is a great material for those with kids because it is wipe-clean. With this in mind, having a leather steering wheel cover makes cleaning your car easier after mucky hands have been touching all the surfaces. With a wet wipe of a damp cloth, you can clean off sticky messes from a steering wheel cover without affecting the original wheel.

The sweat from your hands will also transfer on to your steering wheel and covering it helps to protect against this, as sweat can sink into the material and degrade it. To help enhance the lifespan of your steering wheel cover, you can polish the leather to remove bodily oils.

How to Clean and Care for a Leather Steering Wheel?

Like our skin, leather is natural and needs similar care. Think about how you would care for your own skin and this will give you some hints.

Firstly, to clean leather, you need a soft damp cloth. You can use soapy water for this. Gently make small circles with the damp cloth removing any dirty, muckiness, or stickiness. If you’re really struggling to get sticky patches off your steering wheel, you can use alcohol to remove them. Bear in mind, however, that alcohol dries the leather so should be used sparingly and should be moisturized afterward.

Cleaning your steering wheel with dry cloth (Source)

Once the leather is clean you need to leave it to dry. Leather is porous, so the water needs to evaporate from the cells holding it to prevent you locking in dampness and causing mold.

Once completely dry, you can polish the leather. This is will give is a shine and a moisturized coating. While some polishes condition and polish the leather, some don’t. Make sure to check. If your polish is for moisturizing and conditioning your leather, you must do this first.

For both polish and wax, rub on with a soft, dry cloth. Be thorough and rub in small circles. Leave for a few minutes before rubbing off again, leaving the surface shiny without excess.

How to Choose the Best Leather Steering Wheel Cover for Your Needs?

When selecting a steering wheel cover, it’s a very personal choice. You need to think about what you’re looking for. Is the look more important than the feel? Consider your own requirements first.

If you are concerned with the design, you need to select a color that complements the interior of your car. There is a whole range of designs and colors to choose from, leaving you in your element to select a design you like.

Next, think about the texture and feel. Does it feel good to grasp it? Does it have enough grip? Is it padded and comfortable or slim and fine-fitting for smaller hands? Is there an irritating seam that will rub your palm?

You need to measure your steering wheel to ensure that the one you want actually fits. It would be a shame to find a model you like only to realize you can’t stretch it over your wheel. Look at how it is installed (a zipper, poppers, or stretch-on) and consider if it fits your wheel. Search the design using your dimensions.

Think about cost. Leather is expensive, so you need to think about the grade that’s most suitable to fit your budget without breaking the bank. Remember that while cheaper models cost less upfront, they often have to be replaced later or maintained more due to the lower quality. This may end up costing more over time.

When selecting a model for your budget, always bear in mind that cheaper upfront costs often mean replacing the wheel cover more often.

Is Conditioner Needed for Leather Furniture?

Conditioning your leather couch using a commercial conditioner is extremely important as it helps to keep the furniture soft and supple. By conditioning the fabric, you allow it to ‘give’, reducing its brittle state. When dry, leather begins to crack and come apart as it hardens and becomes splintery. By conditioning the fabric, you moisturize the leather, which keeps it flexible.

As leather is a natural material that comes from animals, it is used to having a supply of water and blood to keep it elasticated and flexible. Conditioning your leather furniture retains this moisture, reducing cracks from wear and tear over time.

By keeping the leather supple, you’ll benefit from a longer lifespan for your leather furniture. The material can breathe and flex without trouble, moving with weight as people sit on the cushions.

You’ll also find you benefit from more comfy sofas, as the leather is softer to sit on. When conditioned, the leather becomes less stiff, making it more easily moveable. This gives your sofa a more cozy feel.

As with human skin, leather needs moisture to shine. Human skin stays soft and free from wrinkles when we apply a moisturizer that buffs the skin. Conditioner works the same way, leaving your leather furniture with a cleaner-looking sheen and a smooth shiny finish.

Leather Conditioner vs Cleaner

Comparing leather conditioner to leather cleaner, you’ll soon realize that they both do different jobs. Applied first, the leather cleaner has the job of taking off the dirt, debris, and grease from the leather. If you’re a person who polishes your leather after conditioning, you’ll find that the cleaner takes off the layer of polish that may still be remaining.

This gets down to the nitty-gritty of the leather, cleaning inside the cracks and wrinkles, making sure the leather is free from dirt and grime.

A leather conditioner comes after the cleaning stage and is as important to increase the lifespan of the leather furniture. The conditioner sinks into the leather making it more supple by moisturizing it. Like human skin, the moisturizer makes its way into the dry crevices and re-elasticated the leather by adding moisture to the dryness.

You can clean leather without a conditioner but you’ll end up exposing the fabric to the sun which will dry it out and reduce its lifespan.

With human skin, we have a layer of oils which help to protect the skin from drying out. Leather needs this too, and where cleaner strips the leather back to the material, the conditioner adds a protective layer that creates flexibility in the fabric.

What to Look for When Selecting Conditioner

While conditioning your leather upholstery is important to keep it looking neat, choosing the right conditioner is integral to prevent you from damaging the leather.

Choose Natural Oils

Sometimes you find leather conditioners which seem to give a real improvement almost instantly. However, after a few days, your sofa seems dry again.

Like shampoos, you’ll often find that leather conditioners contain silicon products to make the leather appear soft while actually just putting a coating over the top. When this wears off, the sofa seems dry again.

Try to choose products that contain natural oils as a leather conditioner should replace the oils that occur naturally in the leather.

Careful with Sodium Chemicals

Alternatively, there are salt based products (sodium) to help cake the conditioner, and while this helps give the conditioner a good consistency, you’ll find it dries the leather out as a side effect. Try to stay clear of products that have sodium-based chemicals as this will leave your leather upholstery brittle in the end.

Know Your Leather

You need to ensure that you don’t just buy any old leather conditioner. There are different grades of leather, that usually refer to how rough or smooth the leather is. Each has a different softness and needs to be treated with the correct corresponding conditioner.

By using the wrong conditioner, you can swamp the fabric in oil, leaving stains. If the conditioner is too light, it won’t do anything and the leather will remain hard.

Some leather conditioners are suitable for all types of leather but you can find this on the bottle or packaging.

How to Properly Use Leather Furniture Conditioner

Before using leather conditioner, you will find you get the best results from using furniture cleaner first. You will need the correct leather furniture cleaner for your type of upholstery.

Once the leather is clean and dry, you can apply the leather conditioner. The leather conditioner will stop the leather from cracking and flaking and will reduce wrinkles.

You need to apply a generous helping of conditioner, about the size of a large marble on a soft cloth. Rub the conditioner onto the leather softly, in a circular motion. Ensure you rub deeply and slowly so the conditioner soaks into the leather. Be thorough, digging into the cracks.

To really give it a shine, you can finish your leather with a polish once the conditioner is truly dry. Again, rub this in with a circular motion with a soft cloth. Remember to use a separate clean, soft cloth to rub the polish off, giving a glossy sheen to the leather.

For best results repeat the process monthly.

Conclusion

Understanding the best product for your leather upholstery will really give it the shine and comfort you desire. Remember to choose the product that suits your type of leather. The packaging should indicate this. By choosing to condition your furniture, you not only preserve your leather in a cleaner, softer fashion, you also benefit from longer furniture life and ease of maintenance over time.

Residential Sewing Machines Vs. Industrial Sewing Machines: Are Residential Sewing Machines Good For Leather Sewing?

Source

When you’re on the hunt for a sewing machine for your leather goods, you’ll notice both residential and industrial machines for the taking. There are a few poignant differences between them, aside from the obvious price gap.

Residential sewing machines, made for less heavy-duty operation and less frequent utilization, are all-in-one machines. They will allow you to work on a few basic leather patterns, using simple stitches. You’re limited to thinner leather for residential sewing machines, as the needles aren’t as strong or long. They tend to be affordably priced for the average person.

If you’re looking to work on more hardcore leather projects and you need something with a little more oomph, you’ll need an industrial sewing machine. More of a commitment, this type of machine has a price jump to match its capability increase. Industrial sewing machines will increase the maximum stitch length you are able to achieve, as well as increasing stitch speeds considerably. Designed to work in mass production, industrial sewing machines rarely need time to cool down and can work tirelessly for many hours.

The advantages of upgrading to an industrial sewing machine are obvious. Enabling you to enter into more heavy-duty leather projects, industrial sewing machines run faster for longer, with greater stitches and better quality work. However, you’ll find that on the negative side, industrial machines are far more expensive than residential sewing machines. Equally, you’ll need extra parts such as a table and “servomotor” to go with your industrial machine.

In the end, your leather sewing machine choice depends on the frequency and intensity with which you sew leather.

What to Consider When Buying a Sewing Machine for Leather?

When you’re in the market to purchase a sewing machine for leather, you’ll come across a range so broad that it becomes impossible to choose. You can narrow down your spectrum by considering these important factors relevant to leather work.

  • Stronger needles: Leather is a thick material with quite a lot of give. Because leather is a natural material, it benefits from elasticity and strength, just as skin does. While this makes it a great, durable material, it is a little harder to manage on a sewing machine. Leather can easily break needles as thinner needles find it tough to penetrate the skin, flexing and breaking under the pull and give of the fabric. You need to consider the thickness of the needle required to work with leather. Sewing machine guides suggest that you use needles with a thickness of around No 110 – 120, which is toward the thicker end of the scale. In this sense, you need a sewing machine that fits thicker needles.
  • Stronger feed dogs: The problem with leather is that it sticks. Imagine your sweaty legs peeling off the sofa in the summer sun – this is how sewing leather feels when the feed dogs are trying to work with the material. As the feed dogs grip the leather to pull it through, they stick, making it difficult to grip and pull evenly, without getting jammed. With this in mind, some people try to use a walking foot as it allows the feed dogs to grip the leather on both the top and bottom for a more even feed. Another solution, which also stops the feed dogs from marking the leather, is to search for a gliding foot or walking foot; these don’t have grooves in and instead lie completely flush to the material.
  • Speed Control: Varying speed control is a great option as it allows you to sew quicker or slower depending on the project and your mood. For beginners, slower speeds enable more steady control, especially with leather, which tends to jam if you’re not careful. For more dexterous and experienced leather seamstresses, leather can be worked at quite a speed if you are capable. So look for machines that can speed right up for straighter pieces, yet still work slowly for more fiddly crevices.
  • Price: The price of sewing machines can range dramatically, depending on the technology you require. For computerized residential sewing machines, you can be looking in excess of $2000. These are typically geared toward professionals. Industrial sewing machines also fetch prices like this. You can pick up very basic machines for as low as $100 as well if you look for a bargain. These models often can’t cope well with leather, however. For beginners, look at price ranges around $300-400 for something that will help you learn and improve your leather work practice. Professionals should breach into the more expensive models to consider the computerized advancements; especially those working with leather quilting. If this is your domain, expect to spend at least $1000.

How to Sew Leather

Here are a few quick tips on sewing leather to help your process go a little more smoothly.

  1. Clean the leather – You want the leather to be nice and clean so that the feed dogs can slide over the fabric. Leather releases natural oils which can make the fabric feel tacky, increasing its likelihood of getting stuck in the machine. You can gently wipe the leather with alcohol, but be sure to oil it after you finish, so it doesn’t dry out.
  2. Be confident – While leather is a beautiful material giving fine results, you can’t do things twice with leather. Needles make holes in the fabric that can be seen so when you work with leather, you only get one shot.
  3. Measure thrice – In this sense, you want to make all measurements three times to be certain where everything goes.
  4. No pins – Pins, like the needle, will make permanent holes in the leather. Instead, use binder clips as they dent the leather a little temporarily, will hold the edges, but will not leave any permanent marks.
  5. Cut and label pieces – Know what you’re working with by cutting out all pattern pieces at the start and labeling them. Set them aside in an organized order so you know what’s next.
  6. Slowly but surely – Work slower than you usually would with a sewing machine as you cannot make mistakes with leather. Try to work at a snail’s pace and feed the leather through evenly.
  7. Don’t rely on the dogs – Remember that leather is sticky so work steadily and add a little manual help to the feed to ensure that the leather works through evenly.

Conclusion

A symbol of luxury and beautifully durable, leather is a fantastic material to work with that rewards you with all the flexibility and longevity of natural materials while giving all the style and chicness of a high-class fabric. Sewing leather, however, is not so easy, and you need a bunch of confidence to get started. Remember to make sure your measurements are correct and have everything lined up, ready to go. A sewing machine with strong needles, flat feed dogs, and variable speeds will really help you to keep good, steady control of your work for more accurate results. Keep a budget in mind when choosing a sewing machine and look for a model that fits your other requirements within that budget range. Like most things in life, you’ll be surprised at the available selection when you know what you want and need!

Triple Aught Design Fast Pack Litespeed Backpack Review – $255

I’ve been somewhat of a backpack (that’s a bookbag for you east coasters) connoisseur ever since I got my first leather bottom Jansport in the 5th grade. Ever since I’ve been experimenting with carry options. I had a bag for travel, school, work, etc. Having so many bags laying around was starting to become ridiculous however.  It was there that I started searching for the one bag to rule them all and in the darkness bind the- excuse me, what I meant to say was that I wanted a bag that could adapt and meet the needs of nearly any activity I could throw at it. In that search I discovered the FAST Pack Litespeed by Triple Aught Design.

We are currently running a giveaway for this backpack. Click here to check it out and enter for your chance to win this backpack + awesome gear from Triple Aught Design!

Construction

An almost unparalleled amount of detail is poured into this bag. The price tag seems justifiable when you realize it’s not only made in the US, but it probably took someone quite a while to build it.

The Fast Pack features several advanced textiles in its construction. The exterior shell is made from 1000 Denier Invista Cordura Fabric. In case you’re wondering, Denier refers to the fiber thickness of individual threads. Typically the higher the number, the more durable the fabric. For reference, most Jansport packs are 600D. This pack also sports YKK zippers with paracord pulls and pretty much all the plastic buckles are ITW GhillieTEX.

Padding in the shoulder straps and back are sourced from Evazote Closed Cell Cross-Linked Ethylene Copolymer Foam. I fell asleep during rocket scientist class but a bit of research reveals this product has many uses in products over a vast area from gym mats to industrial gaskets. If this stuff performs in a Mack truck then surely your tender shoulders will be in good hands.

The back padding utilizes DRI-LEX Aerospacer Moisture Management Mesh. This mesh is often used in shoes and is noted for its moisture redistribution system. Essentially soaking up the sweat off your back and transporting it elsewhere.

Hypalon is  Synthetic Rubber is used in specially reinforced areas. This is another high tech material with great resistance to chemicals, temperature extremes and UV light. If you’ve ever found yourself in a life raft, chances are it was made of Hypalon.

Function

The TAD Fast Pack Litespeed is designed to be a light, relatively compact bag for minimal carry…with the modular potential to do so much more. One could write a lengthy tome on the functionality of this bag. Out of the box it has a large main compartment with a clamshell design that opens up to two mesh zippered pockets. The outside has a small zippered pocket right above the velcro patch area. If you’re unfamiliar with the MOLLE (Modular Lightweight Load-carrying Equipment) system, it might be confusing seeing all the webbing on this bag. Those are basically attachment points for aftermarket MOLLE bags, pouches, etc. Bummed there’s no water bottle pouch on this bag? Simple get a MOLLE water bottle holder, don’t need the water bottle holder? Take it off. That’s where the brilliance of this bag shines. You can customize it for whatever you need.

Thanks to the numerous tie down options, I was easily able to stow my rod onto my pack. This bag is like a faithful wing man in that it literally and metaphorically has your back.
I was working on a deck located on a hill side, carrying a tool box was kind of a pain and I’m not really a tool belt kind of guy, so I stashed my drills and bits into the Lite Speed and was able to traverse the slope with my tools.
The webbing works great for MOLLE packs and adds so much more to the feature set of this pack. Here I have a water bottle holder and small accessory pack securely attached to the bag, I can remove them when I don’t need them, and that’s damn near priceless.
The rear flap can flip down and has a pocket for stowing a tripod, engineering blueprints or even a Red Ryder carbine action two-hundred shot range model air rifle. Oooooooh!

There seems to be a division in tastes when it comes to “tactical” backpacks. Some feel all the velco, patches and webbing is overkill relegated to mall ninjas or doomsday preppers. With the TAD Litespeed you can deck it out aesthetically almost as much as you can functionally. If you want to put a Punisher skull morale patch, magazine molle pouches and a paracord fob on the zippers, go for it. I personally feel the bag in black has a more sophisticated appeal. I like to keep the exterior streamlined and with the prevalent selection of velcro patches available you can personalize the bag endlessly, and it’s pretty fun to do so. The quality materials make this bag stand out among similar bags, almost like a good paint job on a car. I definitely would have preferred an internal pouch on the sides as opposed to so much Pals webbing, but it does come in handy when swapping between a water bottle pouch, or a tripod sling.

I consider this bag first and foremost a tool, and like pointing out the aesthetics of a screwdriver, I find it a somewhat moot point. I think this bag looks awkward when it’s decked out in camo and molle attachments at the airport, however at the range or on the trail it suddenly becomes not just a pack, but a serious piece of indispensable armor.

Conclusion

At the end of the day, I’m convinced the TAD Fast Pack Litespeed can raise to almost any occasion thrown at it, although it will cost you a fair ransom to tweak the pack to your needs. The overbuilt construction present an extreme value that will definitely alleviate the cost of ownership for a bag that can easily replace several bags in your closet. The styling isn’t for everyone, but if you’re looking for a quality, versatile pack I can say this bag warrants a second and third look.

A Brief History/Background

Leather used to be the material used by peasants in comparison to the silks and cottons used by rich people. While those with money frolicked in the colors of fine materials, the poor of society wore the leathers and hides of animals they had slaughtered or bartered for.

Later leather became a staple for high-quality furniture. Dark leather furniture stood in corners and became a symbol of wealth and grandeur.

However, at the turn of the century, and thanks to industrial growth and mass production, leather could be crafted into more fashionable clothes. However, the 50s saw leather jackets associated with bad boys and bikers and tended to be reserved for the fringes of society. Leather furniture took a back seat in favor of more modern, throwaway designs.

The sexual revolution in the 60s brought leather to the forefront of the fashion world, and leather started to become a more luxurious, sensual item used to accentuate class, beauty, and elegance once again.

In the 80s leather really came into its stride, converting the masses to leather trousers, jackets, coats, vests, hats, bags, and later, furniture. Leather furniture has made a resurgence as people realize the quality in its lifespan, ease of maintenance, and elegant comfort.

DIY Maintaining Your Furniture

Maintaining your leather furniture yourself is no hassle – it’s a simple DIY job that takes very little time. There are only a few steps:

  • Lots and Lots of Dirt? –  If your leather is really, really dirty (like it’s been in the garden), you may want to use light soap and warm water with a soft cloth in the first place. You need to make sure it dries properly before moving on to the next steps.
  • Grab a Good Leather Cleaner – You need a good leather cleaner to make sure that there is no dirt or grime on the leather. Make sure to choose the right leather cleaner for your leather, and apply gently to ensure you don’t damage the leather.
  • Let it Dry – Your furniture needs to be completely dry before you apply any other product, otherwise, it may lock in mold or bacteria.
  • Apply Leather Conditioner – Be liberal, but thorough, getting into all the creases and cracks to soften the leather and restore its coloring.
  • Apply Polish – Polish will bring up the shine on heavier leathers. Do not use polish on very soft leather as it won’t make it shiny, and will instead leave a big stain.

Selecting a Cleaner

When you’re choosing a cleaner, you can’t just pick any old cleaner as it may not be suitable for your leather. First, understand the grade of your leather and look for a cleaner specifically made for that leather grade. Next, take these extra things into consideration to find the best product for your needs.

  1. Based on Professional Recommendations– Professional recommendations are a great lifeline to help you decipher the reliability of products. Blogs like The Art of Cleanliness and Wise Bread give great reviews from experts in the industry, to help you choose between the wide range. Also, check out the pros and cons of a few products in our analysis below.
  2. People’s Choice – Why not ask the audience? You’ll find that reviews are a great tool to steer you toward understanding what could go right and what could go wrong with the product This will help you narrow down the product range while also diverting you from any major disasters.
  3. Why do people buy the product? – Comparing why other people buy a product to your own reasons will help you to categorize your needs more effectively. Reviews are a great place to start, as often previous customers will bring up factors you may not have considered.
  4. Price points – Budgeting is essential to ensure your overall satisfaction. Price points can also be a great indicator of quality. Very cheap products tend not to have as good quality components as more expensive products. That said, beware of products with more marketing that value. Again, check the reviews to see if the product is good value for money.
  5. Pros and Cons – Try to look at the pros and cons of a product with an open mind. Consider what you can and can’t live with. A bad smell may affect you more than another person, while you may need to be more strict with pricing than another customer. Understanding the feedback and writing your own pros and cons list can be a good way to get your head around the choice. We’ve started you off with the pros and cons of what we consider the best leather couch cleaner products.

Rugged Minimalist Front Pocket Minimalist Wallet Review – $49

I’m a huge fan of a quality leather wallet regardless of how creative the design is. Having said that, after reviewing many over the years, it’s always a pleasure to experience a totally unique approach. Rugged Minimalist’s Front Pocket Minimalist Wallet squeezes about as much functionality as one could expect out of a single piece of leather and a single rivet.

Bridle leather first became popular in making equestrian harnesses because of its remarkable strength. The material has the ability to retain its form without stretching. Over time, the leather gets old beautifully and acquires lines that only add more character to the item.

About Rugged Minimalist

It’s been a pleasure to get to know Jason, owner and founder of Rugged Minimalist, over the last couple of years. Jason has a background in sales and marketing, but, in an effort to pursue a more creative and more personally rewarding trade, developed an interest in product design that eventually lead him to leather. Over the last four years he’s been working on a variety of designs that focus on utility without excessive labelling or embellishment. Rugged Minimalist aims to make such leather products of the highest quality. While using old world materials and techniques, Rugged Minimalist also strives to cater to the modern consumer: “Bags and accessories that do not feel out of place in the office, on a plane, or in the woods.” All products are handmade in Tennessee.

Leather & Construction

Rugged Minimalist exclusively uses full-grain, vegetable tanned bridle leather from the Wickett & Craig tannery. You can rest assured this is the highest quality of leather. Rugged Minimalist impresses further with how they put this leather to use. A single piece of leather is used, cleverly cut, folded, and held together with a single rivet.

Meet the primary workhorse of this wallet — a single rivet.

Function

When I first got my hands on this wallet, I was frankly a bit confused! The front, from the outside, isn’t so unique, but it gets more interesting from there.

First, the back of the wallet. A single slit allows you to place one super-quick access card. I suspect I’m not alone in that a huge majority of my wallet use involves a single card, so this is an awesome feature.

Then we go inside. There’s one primary pocket that is technically where all of your cards will be stored, but with the back slot card and one additional inner card divided for easier access.

Finally, one small additional pocket near the bottom is just about the right size for a small number of folded bills.

All this from one piece of leather and one rivet! Functionally, things come together just as nicely as the construction. Sure enough, 9 times out of 10, I don’t even have to unsnap the wallet since I only need my primary card. That in and of itself is a huge victory in my book. Then, when I need a less frequented card or even to hold a little cash, those things are also easily accessible under the snap.

The wallet maintains a thin profile in any pocket, yet is roomy enough that I never feel like I need to tug at my cards to get them out. I tend to carry around 6-8 cards and a couple bills, but you could fit more if you needed to.

Many wallet users tend to encounter challenges in fitting their bulky wallets in their small bags, you won’t even have to worry about that with this kind of minimalist wallet. It’s slim and won’t be a challenge to carry in your bag or pocket. You may slip it inside the beautifully crafted Willow handmade leather half-moon bag; they could perfectly work together as both boast of a minimalist design.

Additionally, you won’t even have to feel the strain of your wallet and suffer from fat wallet syndrome. Fat wallet syndrome or piriformis syndrome is the back pain caused by spinal alignment problems because of sitting on a thick wallet for an extended period.

When you sit on a thick wallet, it compresses one side of your back and causes strain on your sciatic nerve. At times the pain that you’ll feel may travel to your hips, buttocks, and down your legs. The pain will be more pronounced if you walk up the stairs. You’ll have a limited range of motion for a period until you have it treated. So, to prevent this, use a wallet that’s slim.

The design of the Front Pocket Minimalist Wallet was made to cater to real-life use and absolutely nails it.

Aesthetic

Rugged Minimalist stays true to their name in the aesthetic of this wallet. No embellishments or designs, for the sake of appearance, are used. Even the logo, already very small and discrete, is hidden below the snap cover. This may not cater to everyone’s taste, but I’m personally a fan. Leather, in and of itself, is a beautiful material, developing patina and character over time. The Minimalist’s pleasing appearance comes from the beautiful leather and functional design.

Nowadays, less is best. The simpler but more functional an item is, the more it attracts a larger audience. A minimalistic style can complement other design aesthetics more seamlessly and will suit any type or personality.

Burnished edges maintain the polished look of the leather.

Here I have the English Tan color of the Minimalist, but Rugged Minimalist offers it (as well as most of their other products) in Black, Chocolate, and Tan as well.

Conclusion

Rugged Minimalist’s Front Pocket Minimalist Wallet is highly functional, well constructed with top-quality leather, unique, and aggressively priced. I have no problems whatsoever highly recommending this wallet to any minimalist wallet lovers. The ultra-quick access card slot is a new favorite feature of mine. The inner pockets are organized just enough to keep things clean. The more I’ve used this wallet the more I’ve come to appreciate just how clever it all is. Head over to Rugged Minimalist’s site to check it out.

We have a few more products from Rugged Minimalist that we’re excited to review. Look forward to those over the next couple of months.

Tuff Writer Operator & Mini Click Pen Review – $95.00 & $115.00

We all know the adage, “The pen is mightier than the sword.” While this saying alludes to the power of the written word over the literal power and durability of a steel blade, I definitely wouldn’t mind possessing a writing instrument that could draft poetry as well as survive an earthquake. In my search for such a writing utensil, I came across the Tuff Writer Operator and Mini Click Pens.

                                                                                  Roll that beautiful bean footage

Construction

Let’s start with the guts of the Tuff Writer Operator (Shown in Blue) 6061-T6 Aerospace Grade Aluminum houses the Fisher SPR4 Pen. The 6061-T6 metal is extremely corrosion resistant, as well as very hard. This a great metal that performs will in areas where rust can be a hindrance. The exterior also employs a proprietary non marking/non reflective finish as well as being anodized for further durability. We see a cold pressed spring steel clip fastened by 2 hex bolts. The cap unscrews from the tip and pressure snaps onto the back for writing. The pen weighs 1.6 ounces and measures 6 inches.

All pens are personally crafted by Jack Roman, head of Tuff Writer. He describes them as “Living Designs” in that he never stops looking for ways to improve the pens, going so far as to rework already good mechanisms for even smoother operation.

The Mini Click is composed of brass, the model reviewed features a highly polished finish. We enjoy the same cold pressed steel clip. The Mini Click is you guessed it, a clicky pen. The cam mechanism is a Tuff Writer designed exclusive. The Mini Click measures in at 5.13 inches and weighs a robust 2.5 ounces. A Fisher SPR4 cartridge is housed as well.

The machining on these pens is superb. Notice how the line just disappears when the cap is screwed on.

Function

Since both of these pens utilize an after market ink cartridge, I won’t focus too much on the actual ink. Although I will say we enjoy all the benefits of a pressurized Fisher cartridge including writing underwater, upside down in 400 degree temperatures. If, although you find yourself in those conditions with a pen, I suggest you stop reading this at once and consult a life coach.

As for the pens in hand, well I find both have their strengths. The Operator’s light weight is really nice, especially considering it’s built like a tank – although the constant need to unscrew the cap makes it better suited for a desk pen in my situation. Both of these pens are built tough, not just for durability in the field but for last ditch self defense applications, I’ll leave it to the reader’s imagination though. The knurling provides decent grip without discomfort.

The tension on the mini clip is great, a very secure clip even on thin fabrics. The upward flare on the end means you can usually clip it one handed depending on the rigidity of the material. I’m digging the O Ring grips but am worried about their overall lifespan and replacements. This pen feels good in the hand, a very substantial feel. I’ve been using it to collect signatures at work and it almost never fails to solicit a, “Wow, nice pen!” remark.

Aesthetic

The thing I enjoy most about these pens, is they’re a different sort of breed. They’re sleek without being gaudy and stylish without pretension. While forms follows function, these pens still retain a quality aesthetic. Tuff Writer offers both of these models in a wide array of finishes too, so finding one that suits your personal style shouldn’t be difficult.

Not sure if I want to write a limerick with this baby or load it into a Howitzer!
The Operator works great on any PALS system, and stays put as well. It perfectly compliments my EDC

Conclusion

I had a good time working with these pens. Tuff Writer did a great job transmuting the concept of a pen as merely a writing device into an essential tool. The machining is flawless as much as I can tell and the price points are fair. Again I stress you consider your end use as the screw cap on the Operator can be a hindrance if you’re using the pen constantly in the field or require one hand operation. All said, if you’re in the market for a non disposable writing instrument that might just outlast you, I’d consider a Tuff Writer.

Choice Cuts Industries Dog Collar and Leash – $75

I’m so proud of my son. He’s 3 years old, healthy and strong and is finally ready for a big boy collar. Of course, you’ll realize my ‘son’ is handsome pup. My love of dogs and affinity for fine leather goods has always kept me on the hunt for that perfect leather collar and leash for him to be able to say bye bye to the ratty nylon one he’s had since he was a young pup. Choice Cuts Industries leather dog collars and leashes are simple yet elegant, well made and just a charm to look at and hold (and cuddle). Ok,ok..I promise to make this review about the leather goods and my pup!

About Choice Cuts Industries

Joel and Kerri Mills started Choice Cuts Industries in 2012. They create one of a kind, carefully crafted leather goods using traditional methods and the the finest American-tanned leather. From watch bands, Apple Watch bands, dog collars, and leashes to bags and everyday carry accessories, they design, make, and ship everything from their North Carolina workshop. They believe in creating beautiful functional items, made to last and improve with time.

Construction

The leather collar and leash is handmade using a single strip of bridal leather, copper rivets and sturdy antique brass hardware. The clasp on the leash is what most refer to as a ‘trigger hook swivel clasp’. Both pieces are 3/4 inches wide and the leash is 4 feet long. The color of this particular set is what they refer to as ‘chestnut’ and other colors are available as well.

Function

The collar and leash function extremely well and are a joy to use. Since we remove our guy’s collar every night before bed and when he goes in the water, I must say it is very easy to buckle on and off, an issue I sometimes have with leather collars and other buckles. The leash clasp is both functional and stylish with the antique finish and I feel very good knowing that it is extra secure should my boy see a squirrel or a mail carrier.

Aesthetic

I really like the minimalistic design of this set. There are some leather collars and leashes I’ve seen out there with more detail, stitches, rivets and other embellishes. But, honestly, I really like that the leather stands out and the design is simple yet beautiful. The leather is rich and gorgeous! I can’t wait to see how it ages on the boy and get’s that rough yet handsome patina and wear.

Conclusion

Both Jasper (the pup) and I are very pleased with this leather leash and collar set. They are available for purchase separately. For $35 for the collar and $45 for the leash, I really feel this is a great value for something that is very stylish, functional and built to last. Perhaps the money saved can go towards some new chew toys or bones.. Check out both the collar and leash -Here-.

Hawkesmill England Borough Leather Camera Strap Review – £115.00

A good camera is an investment, and a good strap is a crucial part of protecting that investment. Many cameras come with a basic, cumbersome strap that can at least prevent your camera from falling. There are lots of upgrades out there that are easier to use or higher quality. How about a strap that also makes your camera more beautiful? The Hawkesmill Borough Leather Camera Strap offers just that. You should think about using PaydayPact if you are in the midst of a financial emergency and require fast money for your camera.

About Hawkesmill

Driven partially by the ‘Made in England’ movement, the artisans at Hawkesmill made a goal to create the best camera bags and straps possible: “very stylish, incredibly durable and yet functional.” They source from reputable, ethical manufacturers in Italy, England, and America. Hawkesmill creates products with the quality of the product in mind, not the cost. Products that they’re proud to use themselves and are second to none.

Leather & Construction

The leather used for the Borough is famous Horween Chromexcel. Chromexcel is known for being both soft and durable, and is a really great choice for a camera strap. The recommended max weight is 5lb, which is probably wise to adhere to for this thickness. While Chromexcel is tough and will last ages, it’s not as bulletproof as harder leathers and will stretch a bit over time.

All construction is done by hand in England. The leather is cut and assembled together precisely with rivets.

Function

The best part about using Chromexcel for the Borough is how incredibly soft it is. You’ll love feeling the nice, wide pad of this strap against your neck. One hidden feature I discovered is that the Borough has a reversible aspect to it. The lovely outer black part is finished and smooth, and the inner part is still somewhat fibrous. As a result, with the finished side out, the Borough has some grip and will stay in place more. However, if you flip the smooth finished side in, it slides nicely for readjusting. This is a feature I’ve seen other strap makers advertise and is handy.

The length of the Borough is adjusted with buckles, a pair on either side. One is near the neck pad and the other is sort of built into the mount. This is a flat-mount camera strap, so you’ll need to be sure that’s the kind your camera has (or it’s fitted with a v-shaped split ring). Since the leather needs to slide through the flat mount regardless, Hawkesmill went ahead and made this portion adjustable as well. Adjustments with a buckle aren’t as fast as other techniques, but are very reliable. The Borough has a good range of length flexibility.

Aesthetic

This is simply a beautiful camera strap. I can’t imagine another strap better complementing my Pen F. The black leather and silver fittings match the camera both in color and sheen, and it’s a show stopping combination. It’s hard to describe that certain something that a beautiful item does to enhance the experience of using it, but the Borough has it, no questions asked.

Conclusion

I love hanging the Hawkesmill Borough Leather Camera Strap around my neck. It looks great, feels great, and performs well. The price is on the high side for a camera strap, but I think Hawkesmill lives up to their promises of a superior product. If you want to love your strap as much as you love your camera, this might be the one for you.

Mr. Lentz Leather Wallets Review – $60/$64

Almost every wallet we see is made of two things: leather and thread. Today we’re reviewing a wallet that breaks this mold. Instead of thread, Mr. Lentz’ wallets are held together only with rivets! It’s a unique idea that ends up working really well. These wallets have a strong look and versatile function.

About Mr. Lentz

Mr. Lentz is an artist, a creator, and a cowboy. He believes in the value of creating something with your hands and from the heart. Each product is made to order. The leather and metal only products are a trademark of the company. In Mr. Lentz’ own words: “You just can’t beat that mixture.” Mr. Lentz also enjoys sharing his talents on his blog, encouraging others to get out and go back to the classic ways of doing things. Overall he’s a guy who puts a lot of passion into his work, and I definitely suggest dropping by his about page to read more.

Personal touch: each product is stamped with its own unique serial number.

Leather & Construction

All Mr. Lentz products are made with premium, US-sourced full-grain leather, which is exactly what we like to see. Rivets are made of solid brass. No issues with the materials whatsoever.

Construction is also superb. There’s actually a lot more attention to detail in these products than is easily visible. I think this may be intentional, actually. These products maintain a certain ‘raw’ look to them, but in reality are meticulously cut, edged, dyed, oiled, and waxed. Each step is done by hand. Products comes with a small tin of Mr. Lentz’ own conditioner for at home treatment. These are simple wallets, but don’t let that make you think they aren’t carefully put together by a highly skilled artisan.

Here I have both the Mr. Lentz Slim Leather Wallet and the Mens Leather Wallet Plus. Both have a card pocket with a quick access slot on each side. The Plus also has another layer in the back for holding bills.

The Leather Wallet Plus has a dedicated pocket in the back for holding cash, receipts, etc.

One thing I really like about these wallets is the versatility. Mr. Lentz designs his products to be minimalist, but a heavy carrier will be perfectly happy too. When I end up with more cards or cash than usual, the open, oversized pockets can hold it all. But when I only have my slimmer daily carry, things are still nicely kept in place. In either configuration my favorite cards are brought to the top with the quick access card slots. It may seem like it would be easier for cards to fall out, since the pockets are open on two sides, but I haven’t had any issues.

Thin, sturdy leather and no bill pocket keep the Slim wallet front pocket worthy, but it can hold as much as you need.

Aesthetic

I mentioned already that these wallets maintain a somewhat ‘raw’ leather look. Rivets enhance this with a masculine, tough feel. However, that doesn’t mean they look unfinished. I have a certain soft spot for these types of products, the ones that are both refined yet true to the wild they came from. These will fit in anywhere.

The best part of good leather is that it just gets better with time. Since I had the privilege of experiencing both the Slim and Plus wallets in Mr. Lentz’ ‘Western Brown’ and ‘Sun Tanned Natural’ colors, I thought this would be a really good chance to show a few attributes of leather, its variation, and color over time:

First, a color comparison. Sun Tanned Natural (left) and Western Brown (right). Both at near-new color.
Next, the natural variation in leather. Both of these wallets are the Sun Tanned Natural color (without patina), but you can see that they aren’t identical–just like no two cows are identical.
Finally, patina. Both of these wallets are the Western Brown color, but I’ve used the Slim (left) much more. A beautiful, textured patina has developed.

Here at BestLeather we get asked about patina development on products with some regularity. Mr. Lentz’ wallets display this nicely. Leather can by dyed, but because it comes from unique animals it will always have some variation and develop in different ways based on how it’s used.

Conclusion

I’m happy to recommend both of these Mr. Lentz wallets as Buy It For Life items. They seem very simple, but truthfully are skillfully constructed and function at a high level. They’re slim enough for a front pocket but have no problems holding as much as needed. The unique rivet construction makes for a strong wallet that stands out. Swing by Mr. Lentz’ shop to see more of his items. There are an impressive number of unique wallets to suit just about any need. Look forward to a review of one of his duffles in the coming weeks, as well!

Introducing SALT Co. Leather

We love to see new leather companies starting off on the right foot here at BestLeather. Today I’d like to introduce Standard Artisan Leather Trading Company, or SALT Co. for short. This Salt Lake City, Utah based company opened for business only a few months ago and primarily makes leather bags. Full grain leather, brass hardware, polyester thread, and function-focused designs are beautiful and come with a lifetime guarantee.

Some of you may have noticed these bags look quite familiar. Unfortunately, regardless of the quality of the product, some companies aren’t able to remain in business. Such was the case for the former Kendal & Hyde. However, thanks to SALT Co. bringing Kendal onto their team, many of his designs have been revived. Some minor design tweaks and improvements have been made but the heart of what made Kendal’s artistry so popular remains.

We got our hands on this gorgeous briefcase and have been using it–look forward to a full review in a month or so. Until then feel free to check out the other wares at SALT Co. Leather.
