Buffalo Jackson Trading Co. Leather Sunglass Straps Review – $27.95

Buffalo Jackson Trading Company is all about the American values and style which any rugged gentleman would have. Their Leather Sunglass Straps in medium whiskey is a clean stylish way to keep any guy looking effortlessly cool, even in a wind tunnel.

BuffaloJacksonSunglassStrap2

CONSTRUCTION

These medium-sized sunglass straps are made with a single strip of 100% full grain cowhide measuring 15 ½ inches long and 7/8 of an inch wide. On the outside, the Buffalo Jackson logo is proudly center displayed in bold capital letters. On the inside, there is a thin layer of pigskin lining glued and sewn together with dark brown nylon stitching which travels along the entire border of the strap. A debossed stamp on the inside declares its country of origin as “Old Mexico” which must mean… Mexico. The leather smells fantastic like a good piece of leather should.

BuffaloJacksonSunglassStrap1 BuffaloJacksonSunglassStrap3

FUNCTION

These straps do what they’re supposed to do. They keep your sunglasses on your neck. The strap wraps relatively close to most heads with about a 2-inch margin of free space. I much prefer this than to those cotton or nylon lanyard straps that flop way back and irritate your neck. On maximum pull between my two hands, there is very little stretch which is likely due to the pigskin lining. When putting the straps onto my basic Ralph Lauren sunglasses, they hold on to the arms well with good snug tension and don’t fall off even if I swing the sunglasses around a bit. They do come off easily enough with a little force. I haven’t used it long enough to test the long-term stretch of these straps but the pigskin seems like a very tight no-stretch lining so I am going to assume these will last longer than my glasses.

BuffaloJacksonSunglassStrap4

AESTHETIC

The look of these straps holds true to the rugged gentleman goals of Buffalo Jackson. The width and large branding of this leather will keep these straps for the more casual outing to the beach, hiking, or fishing, whereas I see the slimmer Elkton strap on the website better suited for the polo or golf game. The colors of the nylon, pigskin, and leather are all near identical and the leather will lend itself to some pretty sweet patina overtime through rain, sweat, and hand oils. This strap is “Whiskey” color and there is a darker “Dark Walnut” option as well.

BuffaloJacksonSunglassStrap7

BESTLEATHER CONCLUSION

The Buffalo Jackson Trading Co. Leather Sunglass Strap is a good buy at $27.95 for those looking for a versatile go-to strap. With minimal care, this casual accessory will definitely last a while and look better with abuse. Pick the XL size for Rayban Wayfarers or other XL sunglasses.

Iron & Resin Elk Bobber Gloves Review – $72

Riding motorcycles is definitely one of my favorite things in this world. There is nothing like hopping on my bike and cruising in to town or hitting some twisties. Every motorcyclist knows that he/she needs several things before they are truly prepared to ride. A helmet, protective jacket, and a solid pair of gloves are the three items, in my opinion, that are essential to every rider. Today we are going to check out the Iron & Resin Elk Bobber Gloves.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

About

“Born in a small, Southern California, blue-collar beach town, graced with world class point breaks and seaside racetracks, where ghosts of a once towering oil industry still linger in the shadows. Iron & Resin is the brainchild of several friends who, after decades of collective experience building successful clothing brands, decided to turn back the clock and start anew. The result is a small, hand built collection of goods that draws heavily upon the founder’s own lifestyles and experiences.

Forged in California… In a mass produced, disposable world, Iron & Resin is a product of “one-off” culture. Where men still build, by their own hands, the craft they ride, be it water or land. Our goods are carefully hand crafted and printed one at a time in California.”

Iron & Resin #2

Construction

My motorcycle is all black. Both of my riding jackets are all black. My helmet is all black. It only makes sense that I ride with black leather gloves. The stylish Elk Bobber gloves are constructed from black 100% Premium Grain Elk Hide leather. With only three main components: the leather, stitching, and metal anchor piston rivet; the Elk Bobber gloves are very simple. Their simple design, rolled cuff, and no-nonsense feel are my favorite things about them. Iron & Resin has done an excellent job combining performance, comfort, and durability into this attractive leather glove.

Iron & Resin #3

Function

The Elk Bobber gloves have been my primary riding gloves for several months now. The comfort level is far above any other riding gloves I have worn. The seams do not bug my fingers or rub them raw, I have adequate squeezing range of motion, and the length is suitable for wearing under a jacket and also comfortably without one. I have encountered one small issue with these stunning gloves. After longer periods of use, the black dye in the leather rubs off into your hands, and is frequently difficult to remove. To many this may seem petty, but if I’m going to show up to meetings or work, I cannot have black all over my hands. Over time the severity has significantly decreased, but know that it is something you will have to adjust to/prepare for during the beginning of the Elk Bobber’s life.

Iron & Resin #4

Aesthetic

As I said before, the Elk leather is some of the softest, most comfortable leather I have worn. The gloves have already formed to my hands and started to develop the worn, masculine look. I have several riding friends who have tried these gloves out, and even purchased some themselves. They are truly an attractive, solid addition to any motorcyclist’s riding gear, whether they ride a street bike like myself, or a classic Harley.

Iron & Resin #6

Conclusion

It is obvious that passion, time, and superior materials went in to the making of the Iron & Resin Elk Bobber gloves. Even though the gloves do leave a few black marks during the “new” stage, it is a small price to pay for such, comfortable, attractive, and capable leather gloves. At $72.00, the Elk Bobber is a reasonable investment that will absolutely last a lifetime of riding. Head over to Iron & Resin’s website to check out their other leather gloves, and even some other hand built lifestyle goods.

Conestoga Leather Amia Tote Review – $269

The name Amia in French means “beloved.” Conestoga Leather bestowed this name upon their Leather Amia Tote because they hope it will become your favorite bag. Beloved. Let’s see if it lives up to the name.

Conestoga Leather Amia Tote 1

About Conestoga Leather

Maryland-based Conestoga Leather features craftsmanship by the Amish community nestled in the Maryland area and the Colorado Rocky Mountains. Their handmade product line, which includes folios, bags, and valet trays, has a heavy focus on functionality and design. Their main focus is on luxury portfolios, one of which we recently reviewed–  “The Professional” Folio.

From their website: “Our goal is to offer quality, American made products that are handcrafted by artisans. We desire to be fairly priced but realize that we do not have the advantages of large companies who build items by the tens of thousands. Our products are often crafted one at a time.“

Conestoga Leather Amia Tote 4

The Leather

Conestoga Leather exclusively uses North American bison hides that are tanned in the U.S. The Amia Tote is made of thick full grain bison hide, inside and out. The leather is both durable and beautiful. Bison hide always has that distinct rustic grain that separates it from cowhide, so you can immediately tell that this tote isn’t your everyday cow leather bag.

The bag comes in five color options – Mocha, Ocean Blue, Peanut, Red Rock Canyon, and Saddle. My Amia Tote is “Peanut” colored, a pleasant nutty brown that complements the bison leather grain well.

Conestoga Leather Amia Tote 7

Construction & Function

The Amia Tote is pretty simply constructed, with two sturdy copper rivets attaching each end of the long tote handles, which have about a 12″ drop length. This gives the tote nice long straps that allow you to carry it over your shoulders comfortably. The copper rivets create a metallic pop that adds visual interest to the bag.

Conestoga Leather Amia Tote 5

At 12″ x 10″ x 4″ the bag is on the smaller side. It comfortably fits everything you would fit in a standard purse, but don’t expect to fit anything much bigger than an iPad in there. There are leather slot pockets on both sides of the bag, which are about 5″ deep and run across the width of the tote. These are sturdy and good for collecting the little items you don’t want rolling around the bottom of your tote.

The top of the bag is closed with a nice strong magnetic clasp, which effectively holds the thick leather together.

Conestoga Leather Amia Tote 6

Aesthetic

The Amia tote is beautiful. The quality of the bison leather is very high. It’s one of those bags that you like to touch and feel. It’s sturdy thanks to the thickness of the leather. The deep grain comes through nicely in the peanut color I requested and received. It’s one of those bags that gets noticed right away too. So, be prepared for questions, comments, and “can I feel it?”…because it will happen.

Conestoga Leather Amia Tote 10

Conclusion

The Conestoga Leather Amia Tote is a versatile bag that is quickly becoming “beloved.” If you’re looking for value, this is probably not the tote for you, as this is a luxury item handmade in the U.S. with top-notch materials. But, if you’ve got the money, the Amia tote won’t disappoint and will provide many, many years of great service.

Wilsons Leather Roma Leather Tote w/Bar Review – $179.99

As an admirer of all things leather, I can appreciate the value in a quality leather product even when I see the product is intended for a different audience.  I’m also someone who values the contentedness of a happy home.  Thus, when given the opportunity to review the Wilsons Leather Roma Leather Tote, my wife was ecstatic, and I was grateful for the chance.

As an expert in all things fashion, specifically purses and shoes, I knew I would need my wife’s objective opinion to give this tote a thorough review.  As the product tester, her insight into the function and aesthetics of this bag were invaluable.

Wilsons-Leather-Roma-Leather-Tote-011

About Wilsons Leather

The Minnesota-based Wilsons Leather, formed in 1988 by a merging of Bermans Leather and Wilsons House of Suede and Leather, is a modern day leather clothing and apparel retailer known famously for their jackets, bags, and accessories.

In 2008, the G-III Apparel Group purchased Wilson’s Leather and E-commerce divisions.  Today, Wilsons Leather offers in-season, designer products at their outlet stores. Their online stores offer an even more extensive line of products in addition to increasing brand awareness and improving customer experience.

On a more personal note, my wife and I have been visiting the Wilsons Leather Outlet in North Bend, Washington, each time we take a trip to the west side of Washington from our home in Spokane.

Wilsons-Leather-Roma-Leather-Tote-003

Construction

The leather in this bag is sourced from India and is semi-vegetable tanned cowhide dyed red (the bag itself comes in three color selections at Wilsons Leather online) and is held together by non-contrast polyester thread and SPS zippers.  The gold-colored bar across the top contrasts the red color and doesn’t interfere with the top zipper closure.  Dual carry handles on the bag are attached to the tote with gold hardware that is sturdy and attractive. Weighing in at 2.2 lbs (1kg) with stitched-in sides, this bag is going to hold its constitution (shape) regardless of what you choose to carry in it.  At 16″ x 12″ x 4.25″, you’ve got over 800 cubic inches of storage space, more than enough space to store all but the proverbial kitchen sink.

Wilsons-Leather-Roma-Leather-Tote-005

Having purchased Wilsons Leather purses in the past, my wife noted that the black beading on the carry handles has a tendency to come loose after repeated use.  The beads appear mostly cosmetic, though they do function to give the straps grip when carrying it on your shoulder, so it is something to keep in mind.

On the outside of the bag, you’ve got one zippered pocket for carrying those odds and ends you can’t live without, while the inside of the bag shows a large interior pocket  suitable for tablets, large wallets, and other devices bordered by another zippered pocket and two open pockets.  The two open pockets are sized for carrying a smart phone or similar device.

Wilsons-Leather-Roma-Leather-Tote-004

Function

I interviewed my wife for this portion of the review and she shared some very candid opinions with me, as she has done throughout our marriage.  She found that both the carry strap and handles fit comfortably over her shoulder. How she carried it depended on the wardrobe she was wearing that day. You’ll find the bag does not easily slip off your shoulder due to the black rubber beading in the carrying handles and straps.

The inside and outside pockets were convenient for storage, as she put in her phone, notepads, and various sundries a business professional might need on any given day.

While the bag itself lends the user a sleek and professional look, she encountered one issue with the design: the bag opening is far narrower width of the rest of the bag.  This led to her not being able to see to the bottom of the purse.  Smaller items got lost in the bottom of the bag and were difficult to find at a moment’s notice.  However, the design does lend itself well to carrying files, small laptop computers, and tablets, which is what she mainly used it for.

Aesthetic

The design, as she stated, is highly professional, and made for a business woman with a sense of style. The gold-colored hardware combined with the rich red color of the leather is a striking combination that promotes sophistication and elegance with the right wardrobe.  As will all accessories, the shape is an important part of the appeal.  With the stitched in ends of the bag, you have a tote that will hold its shape for years.  This tote will work best with a business professional look, especially with darker colors where the bag will stand out as the showpiece of your entire outfit.

Wilsons-Leather-Roma-Leather-Tote-002

Conclusion

When you want to get into quality leather products without breaking your bank, Wilsons is always a great place to start.  With the noted exception of the rubber beads lining the handle, the bag is solidly constructed.  Known for their great sales, the bag’s MSRP is set at $460.00, listed online at $179.99, and right now (as of this writing), you can get an extra 40% off, bringing the price down to a smoking $108.00 and free shipping on your first order.

To recap, you’ve got genuine leather, overall great construction, good, looks, and plenty of carry space in a great looking tote for under $110 shipped.  While we did note a couple of potential, albeit minor, functional issues, using the tote for the larger items it seems to be designed for will serve you well.  The Roma Leather Tote is a nice way to start your collection of fine leather purses, bags, and satchels without breaking the bank while still looking great.

Wilsons Leather Dark Rugged Double Gusset Brief Review- $249.99

If looks were everything, there would be no question about picking up Wilsons Leather Dark Rugged Double Gusset Brief. Dark leather, contrast stitching, and antiqued brass combine to give this bag an appeal that is universal to the modern business world.

Wilsons offers the brief as a lightweight bag to hold your laptop, tablet, and office accessories. With the aesthetic appeal of the bag being obvious upon inspection, the question is whether or not the bag will hold up to the daily demands of the office and the roads you travel on to get there.

Wilsons-Leather-Dark-Rugged-Double-Gusset-Brief-006

About Wilsons Leather

Wilsons Leather is a U.S. leather retailer, selling jackets, belts, shoes, handbags, and gloves. At its peak in 2002, the Minneapolis-based retailer had 763 stores in Canada and the United States.

Construction

The bag is constructed of semi-vegetable tanned cow leather sourced in China, measuring 16” x 12” x 4” and is light for its size and construction. It weighs in at 2 pounds, 14 ounces (1.2 kilograms) without the strap or 3 pounds, 3 ounces (1.5 kilograms) with it. The lightness is due in part to the 2 mm thickness of the leather shell.  The leather shell is well supported by foam padding encased in nylon between each section of the bag.  The foam padding on the smaller accessory pockets is a nice touch.

Wilsons-Leather-Dark-Rugged-Double-Gusset-Brief-011

On the outside of the bag, everything is held together by gold contrast stitching using polyester thread. Antique brass rivets hold down the D-rings (for attaching the carry strap) and one piece of the handle.  The other side of the handle is inset into the bag and stitched in place.  The zippers are constructed of the same antiqued-brass slides and plastic elements (the teeth) and are non-branded, unlike the traditional YKK zippers found in many of Wilsons Leather products.  I would like to see metal elements in the zippers to increase product longevity even with the minor weight increase to the bag.

The insides of the bag are made up of two main compartments and three outer pockets.  The small outer pocket has slots for cards, pens, a smartphone, and room for other accessories. The larger exterior pocket adjacent to it is available for slightly larger accessories.  The outer pocket on the other side of the bag is identical to this pocket.

Wilsons-Leather-Dark-Rugged-Double-Gusset-Brief-013

The main inner pocket has three large side pockets (5.5” wide by 8.5” deep) for electronics and a velcro nylon strap for securing your laptop.

The last piece is the carrying strap, made of nylon with a sliding leather pad for your shoulder.  At the end of the pad, antique brass swivel snap hooks allow you to attach the strap to the bag.

Wilsons-Leather-Dark-Rugged-Double-Gusset-Brief-010

Function

I work in an office and occasionally in the field, so need an all-in-one bag to carry my laptop and various sundries around.  This bag does just that.  With numerous zipped inside and outside pockets, it was very easy to store and access all of my equipment on the fly.

Wilsons-Leather-Dark-Rugged-Double-Gusset-Brief-012

The adjustable-length canvas strap was nice for longer walks.  Even with the sliding leather pad on the strap, keeping the strap crossed over my opposite shoulder was the easiest way to carry it. I was able to access the zippered pockets even with the bag slung over my shoulder, which was nice when reaching for my wallet or phone.

If you need more space, you’ll appreciate the double gusset zip-around for more storage. It adds 3 inches of width to the bag, which is very generous for a bag of this type.

Wilsons-Leather-Dark-Rugged-Double-Gusset-Brief-007

Aesthetic

The dark brown leather looks good with almost any business attire.  The stitching is even and well done, a must when you use a contrasting thread color.  The black zipper elements add a subtle appearance, though antique brass elements on the zippers would fit in well with the sliders.

I like the size of the bag for carrying it around.  It’s easily going to fit in the overhead compartment of any plane, though you’ll probably elect to carry it with you considering the cargo it carries.

While you may not find yourself looking at the interior of the bag that much, it bears mentioning.  The copper color of the nylon has a nice sheen to it, and the stitching is equally well done.  Attention to details like this are what help to elevate a leather product over other designs.  Of note, the blue tags around the zippers are there as a protectant and easily removed.  I left them on in some photos to show detail in packaging of this product.

Wilsons-Leather-Dark-Rugged-Double-Gusset-Brief-002

Conclusion

The Dark Rugged Double Gusset Brief is a professional, lightweight case that will serve you well in the office and on the road.  It is attractive, has plenty of room, and should hold up well in the world of a business executive, college student, or anyone else needing a small briefcase.  As I mentioned earlier, my biggest concern is the use of plastic zippers if you’re constantly getting in and out of the bag.  Time will tell, though as of this writing, I’ve not encountered any issues.

Considering the price point of $239.99, the bag is a good value for a cowhide leather brief.  What I appreciate about Wilsons Leather is that they often have sales on their products, whether you are shopping online or at one of their outlet stores; they tend to have quite a few sales where everything is 40% off online, meaning you could pick the bag up for $149.99 – an excellent deal.  In the world of leather briefs, this bag would make a great gift for the young entrepreneur or graduate student.

BOSTON BOOT CO CAMBRIDGE BOOT REVIEW – $200

As the ill fated Ned Stark would say, Winter is coming. While stowing away our flip flops and sunblock might seem like a real downer, the absence of men’s capris and the chance to dress up a little bit more seem like a good tradeoff. We’re excited to look at Boston Boot Co’s Cambridge Boot as a viable footwear option.

CambridgeBoot (3)

ABOUT

Dubbed Boston’s first Micro-Shoery, Boston Boot Co launched after a massively successful Kickstarter campaign in December of 2013. With over 30 years of combined experience in business and the shoe industry, founders Joe Lyons and Joe Prew established the brand with the aim of making small batches of highly crafted footwear. Free from the constraints of corporate bureaucracy, Boston Boot Co focuses on making the best boot possible. They currently offer various designs ranging from dressy wingtips to rugged chukkas.

CambridgeBoot (2)

CONSTRUCTION

The immediate appeal of the Cambridge Boot is its use of waterproof Horween 2.0-2.2mm Chromexcel leather. The pull up (changing of colors due to bending or pulling due to natural oils) on this leather is amazing. Rawhide laces from Kentucky based Auburn Leather Co are kept in place with 10 mm copper eyelets which are anodized for added protection. The Lining is calf leather and the triple density footbed with gel cushioning provides the comfort. A natural leather welt is used, which is the strip of leather that runs along the perimeter of the outsole. The outsole itself is a lightweight high-density blown rubber. Boots weigh in at approximately 2lbs 9 oz.

CambridgeBoot (6)

FUNCTION

The Cambridge is a pretty versatile boot that performs well in a variety of situations.  The thumb tab on the heel makes for easy fitting. The high density insole coupled with the blown rubber outsole usually associated with running shoes provides for a boot that wears more like a shoe and is very comfortable. While I’ve never been a fan of rawhide laces due to their tendency to come untied, I can’t deny their aesthetic. The Auburn laces are pretty supple though and hold a lot longer than other laces I’ve tried. In cold weather, I’d definitely recommend some thick wool socks, as the Cambridge is not insulated. I actually prefer them this way as they can be worn across a wide range of weather conditions. The waterproof Horween definitely delivers as water glides right off, and with the welt construction I wouldn’t worry stepping in deeper puddles. I would have really liked to have had a gusseted tongue though, as it would prevent water and debris from entering the boot and making the Cambridge truly go anywhere. Traction is really good and the moderate outsole pattern can handle city streets and dirt paths adequately. All in all, the Cambridge is great for the shoe wearer who wants a boot but desires the flexibility and comfort of a casual shoe.

CambridgeBoot (5)

AESTHETIC

These are some damn good looking boots. The subdued orange outsole provides a snappy contrast to the sumptuous Horween leather. The welt coloring matches the stitching and the almost idiosyncratic attention to detail really completes the look. The eyelets are silver colored but the top is red, which gives some understated styling without showboating. The Boston Boot Co overlapping B symbols adorn the outer side heels. No loose threads, no separation on the welt and even stitching make you think some souls were sold in the fabrication of these boots.

CambridgeBoot (1)

CONCLUSION

If you’ve been spending the last few weeks looking for boots and weren’t satisfied with the current selection in large retail chains, then Boston Boot Co’s Cambridge Boot certainly warrants a second look. Made with top quality materials and priced rather fairly, they are a solid purchase.

HoldFast Gear Money Maker Luxury Leather Multi Camera Strap Review – $215.00/$400.00

I moonlight as a photographer and have shot everything from portraits and weddings to sporting events.  I prefer full-frame DSLR cameras and the accompanying glass that goes with them for all my shoots.  However, carrying that much equipment can make you feel like you’re carrying Sisyphus’ rock at the end of a long photography session.

When I was offered the chance to review Hold Fast Gear’s Money Maker Luxury Leather Multi-Camera Strap, I took it without hesitation. The company claims it will allow you to carry up to 3 cameras comfortably for long periods of time.  While I couldn’t justify the purchase of a third camera to my boss (read “wife”) for this review, I have plenty of glass to give it a thorough test.

ABOUT HOLD FAST GEAR

Matthew Swaggart founded Holdfast Gear in 2011 with three values in mind: taste, logic, and faith.  As a photographer who has traveled the world, Matt understood the burden of carrying around pounds of equipment for hours or days at a time.

With an appreciation for the design aesthetics of the past and the need for functional equipment that would hold up even under the most austere conditions, he founded Hold Fast Gear.  His company offers a growing line of products designed to suit the needs of the on-the-go photographer.

Today, Matt keeps his notebooks close with ideas for new products, and plans to launch at least 10 new products within the next year.  He takes pride in the ethical production of all of his products in the USA while providing sustainable jobs to the Oklahoma economy.

Hold-Fast-Gear-Money-Maker-Luxury-Leather-Multi-Camera-Strap-003

CONSTRUCTION

We’ll be looking at two versions of the strap today, both similar in function, but different in form:

American Bison Leather (Mahogany): The genuine bison leather on this strap came from Colorado.  Measurements average 35.8 mm across and 5 mm thick.  Half of the thickness is due to the cream glove leather lining on the inside of the strap. There are four black D-rings on the front of the strap designed for carrying accessories. The two large buckles on the back allow for adjustment of the shoulder opening, having 9 adjustment holes spaced 25 mm apart. Dark grey punch-through rivets hold everything together including the leather securing the D-rings, the buckle straps, the cross piece, and the camera sliders.

Hold-Fast-Gear-Money-Maker-Luxury-Leather-Multi-Camera-Strap-001

The camera sliders are constructed of a massive D-ring, an equally massive, nickel-plated swivel, a fold-over leather strap secured by 4 rivets, and ¼” screw mount to attach to the tripod  mount on your camera.  As if that wasn’t enough, they also added a safety catch made of nylon and a plastic swivel that mounts to the lug on the left side of your camera.

Overall weight comes in at 1 pound, 14 ounces (840 grams), making it a little heavier than the bridle leather strap.

Tan Bridle Leather: We mention here only the differences between the straps.  This strap measures 33.5 mm across (-2.3 mm) with a thickness of 3.2 mm (-1.8 mm).  Of note, this strap is not lined with the cream glove leather. The hardware is all nickel-plated rather than black, including the rivets.

Overall weight comes in at a lighter 1 pound, 9 ounces (700 grams), and beside the bridle leather being naturally a bit stiff when it is new, those are the major differences in construction of the two straps.

FUNCTION

Because the overall design of the straps is nearly identical, I spent the majority of my time testing the functionality on the American bison strap.

My first chance to give the strap a real test was at a wedding reception photoshoot.  I attached my primary camera – a Canon 5D Mark III with battery grip and various lenses, and my secondary camera – a Canon EOS Rebel T3i with 50 mm prime lens.  The weight was significant, and would be a good test of the strap.

Hold-Fast-Gear-Money-Maker-Luxury-Leather-Multi-Camera-Strap-013

I had no problems sliding the camera into position for any type of shot I wanted to take.  Carrying the cameras around for over 2 hours, I barely noticed the weight of the cameras.  The strap is that comfortable.  While initially concerned that the free-hanging cameras would bang against my leg or the surrounding environment, it was easy to adjust their position and prevent this from happening.  If you’re someone who uses telephoto lenses of 200mm or more, you’ll want to be a little more careful in cramped environments.

Hold-Fast-Gear-Money-Maker-Luxury-Leather-Multi-Camera-Strap-010

The other issue I encountered was minor: getting the split ring on the lug of my camera and mounting the screw to the camera.  It took some finesse with my large hands to get the split ring on the lug.  Now that it’s there, I may never take it off.

I occasionally do shots low to the ground and found it easier to remove the camera from the strap.  This took a little time if you’re someone who finds themselves doing this often.

Overall, I was very impressed with the ease of use and comfort of this strap, and found it very useful for the run-and-gun type of shooting that defined this wedding reception.

AESTHETIC

Matt uses a chromium salt tanning process to give the bison leather its softness and texture, and then a vegetable-based re-tan to bring back the form of the leather. The cream leather padding on the underside of the strap adds to the comfort and the beauty of the strap.

Hold-Fast-Gear-Money-Maker-Luxury-Leather-Multi-Camera-Strap-002The bridle leather strap is an English bridle that is vegetable-tanned, drum dyed, and stuffed full of waxes and grease to make it weather proof.  While initially stiff, it has the advantage of molding to the user after repeated use.

Hold-Fast-Gear-Money-Maker-Luxury-Leather-Multi-Camera-Strap-011

The hardware on both is beautiful and heavy duty at the same time.  Large buckles and D-rings give these straps a flare that will make them get noticed. While the functions remain the same, the strap you choose is purely a matter of looks and what you prefer.

Hold-Fast-Gear-Money-Maker-Luxury-Leather-Multi-Camera-Strap-008

THE FINAL WORD

At the price point of $215 for the tan bridle leather strap and $400 for the American bison mahogany strap, the Money Maker Luxury Leather Multi-Camera Strap is a great investment. Like all quality leather products, it isn’t inexpensive; it is an investment.  Having not known about this product before I was asked to review it, I didn’t know what I was missing. I’ll be able to save my shoulders years of wear and look good while doing it.

As of this final writing, I also had the opportunity to use this strap at an 8-hour wedding shoot on September 19th, 2015.  With my 5D Mark III, battery grip, 70-200mm lens, and attached speedlight, I had some serious weight riding on my shoulders.  In addition, I had my second camera, a Canon T3i with 50mmm lense as my backup, riding on the other strap.  At the end of the day, my shoulders felt great – the strap performed that well.  Now if only Matt could invent something to make my feet a little less tired.

If you want a camera support system designed and built by a seasoned photographer that is attractive and functional, Hold Fast Gear has got it right.  With twelve models, there is plenty to choose from when trying to satisfy your sense of adventure.

Timberland Men’s 6-inch Premium Waterproof Boots Review – $190

Timberland boots are one of those menswear items that have become an icon. Whether you’re a construction worker or Kanye, Timberland boots will probably fit into your aesthetic. From ladies’ footwear to accessories to luggage, Timberland has it all, but their Men’s 6-inch Premium Waterproof Boots are by far their most recognizable product.

Timberland Mens Boots 3

ABOUT TIMBERLAND

Timberland can trace its roots all the way back to 1920s Boston, where Nathan Schwartz began his career as an apprentice stitcher. Schwartz and his family grew the company and, in the 1950s introduced an innovative injection-molding technique that allowed them to waterproof their boots. In 1973, they introduced the “Timberland” brand, and the rest is history. Timberland is now a huge clothing and footwear brand that operates stores worldwide. Their company headquarters are in Stratham, New Hampshire.

Timberland Mens Boots 10

CONSTRUCTION & FUNCTION

Whether you’re wearing these for work or play, you’re going to want your boots to be durable and waterproof, especially considering the fact that they’re pretty heavy. The leather uppers are directly attached and are sealed at the seam so they stay waterproof. The hefty rubber sole is the most important part of these boots, giving you great traction and the knowledge that you’ll never wear through the sole. The only issue I’ve noticed is that the rubber soles can be a little squeaky!

Timberland Mens Boots 5

These boots are surprisingly comfortable, with thick padding on the midsoles and heel, as well as a padded collar for a pleasant ankle fit and mobility. They’ll also keep your feet warm, thanks to their built-in Primaloft ECO insulation, made from 50% recycled plastic. **Side note: Timberland has a pretty impressive commitment to sustainable and climate-friendly manufacturing. You’ll notice a lot of their shipping and manufacturing materials are recycled or biodegradable. You can read more about that here.**

Timberland Mens Boots 1

AESTHETIC

The Wheat Nubuck is of course the classic yellow color associated with Timberlands, but this Rust Nubuck comes pretty close, and has a richer color and texture. They look great and go with nearly everything, especially denim. The downside of this color is that they stain pretty easily, especially if you wear them as actual workboots. You can pick up a suede & nubuck cleaner pretty much anywhere, and I’d recommend doing so if you like your boots to look pristine.

Timberland Mens Boots 4

There are also quite a few other options if you’re looking for a darker color. Smooth Black, Black Nubuck, Dark Chocolate Nubuck, Black/Olive Hainsworth, and Chestnut/Navy Hainsworth, some with different color soles.

The laces are made of 100% recycled nylon. If you want to be really cool, you can leave them untied and flip the tongue out, but you have to be pretty stylish to pull that off. Either way, these are going to look great.

Timberland Mens Boots 2

CONCLUSION

So far, the Timberland Men’s 6-inch Premium Waterproof Boots have proven to be a great choice for boots on the lower end of the price range. If you’re looking for a non-imported boot that can be resoled and last 5+ years, save up for a different boot in the $375+ price range. The Timberlands are a good price at $190, and you can often find them on sale. Casually, you’ll probably get a solid three or four years out of these boots, and their timeless look won’t go out of style any time soon. And if you’re not totally convinced on the more classic Wheat or Rust Nubuck style, the other leather and sole colors differentiate themselves enough to look like a separate boot altogether. They’ll stand up to the elements and look good doing it.

Wilsons Leather Black Rivet Distressed Leather Moto Jacket Review – $319.99

As a young boy of eleven, I was first introduced to the MacGyver television series right about the time the Nintendo Entertainment System was released in America.  Splitting my time between my two new loves, I noticed that  during the show, MacGyver had a habit of wearing a brown distressed leather jacket.

I was rather pleased when asked to review the Wilsons Leather Black Rivet Distressed Leather Moto Jacket, as it immediately reminded me of those days thirty years passed.  While not identical to the one Richard Dean Anderson wore in the series, there are enough similarities that it took me back to nostalgia-land for a while.

Wilsons-Leather-Black-Rivet-Distressed-Leather-Moto-Jacket-006-NR

Construction

The shell is constructed of hand-distressed, semi-vegetable tanned sheep’s leather sourced from Pakistan with a cotton body liner and interior sleeves lined with polyester. The filler inside the jacket is also made of 100% polyester, with the total weight of the jacket coming in at 2 pounds, 7 ounces (1.1 kilograms).  The jacket is light into comparison with other jackets on the market

Wilsons-Leather-Black-Rivet-Distressed-Leather-Moto-Jacket-007

The zippered hand and chest pockets, the main zipper, and the banded wrist cuffs all use YKK antiqued-brass zippers.  The seams of the jacket are double-stitched with non-contrasting brown polyester thread for strength.  The stitches themselves are even and add to the overall look of the jacket.

Wilsons-Leather-Black-Rivet-Distressed-Leather-Moto-Jacket-013

Function

When talking about leather jackets, their function is pretty straightforward: you wear them when they fit the situation, whether it be a cold fall day or a night out on the town. I recently wore it to the premier of a television series they are filming here in Spokane, Washington, and was perfectly comfortable with the outside temperature in the low 60s.  Much higher than that and it would be too warm.  Depending upon where you live, I imagine it would be suitable for winter and spring months as well.  For most locations in the summer, it’ll be too warm as with most coats and jackets.

As a side note, I did find the two inner breast pockets rather handy for storing my phone and my wallet.

Wilsons-Leather-Black-Rivet-Distressed-Leather-Moto-Jacket-011

Aesthetic

Before anything else, I noticed how soft the leather shell of this jacket is. The second thing I noticed was the beautiful cognac brown color of the leather and the way the distressed look played in the light.

Wilsons-Leather-Black-Rivet-Distressed-Leather-Moto-Jacket-015

This is the first brown leather jacket I’ve had a chance to review, and it’s quickly becoming my favorite.  It’s MacGyverish (a word meaning “outstanding” that I made up) good looks easily makes the jacket a classic for those of us who appreciated that era of TV.

Even if you aren’t an old school TV enthusiast, the look and feel of the jacket will draw you in. If you like Wilson’s, they are also great when used with leading brands like Polo, Tommy Hilfiger, and Sandbanks Clothing, as their shirts, shorts, and hats perfectly match leather products.  I felt like I could wear it with a plain black t-shirt, as well as a nice dress shirt depending on where you are going.  The jacket is balanced in its look and feel , giving it the ability to skirt the line between casual and formal.

Conclusion

Overall, I found the look and feel of this jacket to match my tastes pretty closely.  As a guy with slightly larger shoulders, I did find the large size a little tight around the shoulders, but not enough to prevent me from wearing it comfortably.  This has happened with most of the leather jackets I’ve tried on in the last few years.

Wilsons Leather outlets and online stores always have pretty good sales going on; I don’t think there is ever a time where I’ve paid the price listed on the tag for my purchase.  The Black Rivet Distressed Leather Moto Jacket is no exception.  The MSRP is $700.00, with the purchase price set at $319.99.  Were this the final price, I’d still consider purchasing the jacket were my budget to allow it. At the time of this review, you could get an additional 40% and free shipping if you’re purchasing online, bringing the cost down to $192.00 out the door.  I wholly advise checking their online site for deals if you’re in the market for a leather jacket.

Wilsons-Leather-Black-Rivet-Distressed-Leather-Moto-Jacket-016

With the proper care and cleaning, if you decide to invest in the jacket, it’s going to last you a long time.  Well-cared for leather products can have a lifetime of service, and this jacket is no exception.  For looks, durability and comfort, I found this jacket to be well worth the price.

Total Watch Repair Black Genuine Alligator Watch Strap Review – $134.95

CoverPhoto
When you get a nice watch, one of the most important things to do is finding yourself a good watchmaker. You can easily take it back to the brand for a repair (if they offer it), but it will typically cost you a fair amount to get any type of service done. Because of this, independent watchmakers abound. There are many good ones, but there are also a lot of bad ones who will take your watch, spray it down with WD-40 and call it a day. For this reason it is a good idea to do your research and find a watchmaker who has what it takes to do right by your timepiece.

TWR 8

Total Watch Repair is a stellar watch repair business that’s been located in Los Angeles for nearly 25 years. Many in the watch community trust them with their precious watches including a few who are authorities on the luxury watch industry. But I’m not here to talk about their watch repair capabilities, though they are great, I am here to let you know about the straps that they offer.

TWR 1

After a few years of constant wear, the strap or bracelet can look less than presentable. To give your watch a fresh look or simply to shake things up a bit, all it takes is a new watch strap. By changing the strap, you can dress up or down your watch, making it a way more versatile piece of your wardrobe without too much cost or effort. Total Watch Repair offers a wide selection of straps as well as the option to change it during a service. They have all of the major watch strap manufacturers along with almost any style you could want. I decided to try and dress up my Omega Seamaster by changing the bracelet out with Hadley Roma Black Alligator leather strap.

Construction

When you purchase a watch band from Total Watch Repair, you can expect to get a quality strap. This gator strap is no exception. Hadley Roma is the standard of watch strap makers. They produce sturdy leather bands that will take a beating and still look good and they do it at attractive prices. The one I received is made from an excellent cut of black Louisiana Alligator leather top and tan calf skin backing and is stitched with black thread. I have several alligator and crocodile straps at varying price points and this one has a similar feel to the best of them.

TWR 2

TWR6

There were a few corners cut, such as burnishing of the edges and the thickness of the thread and edge. I definitely think that these are acceptable sacrifices since the leather itself is of excellent quality and the price of the strap itself. If I were to get this specifically for a dress watch, especially a high-end dress watch, I would splurge and get something with a little more refinement, but for the majority of buyers, these small imperfections will not be noticeable nor will they affect the sturdiness of the strap.

TWR 3

Function

If you are wondering, “why alligator?” the answer is simple. Alligator is quite possible the most comfortable watch strap leather. It takes no time at all to break in and it doesn’t break down like cowhide does after repeatedly bending the tongue back and forth through the buckle. On top of being extremely comfortable, alligator leather can make almost any watch ready to be paired with a suit. It is a naturally dressy leather, especially when it is black.

TWR 4

Aesthetic

The Hadley Roma band is pretty classy. I wouldn’t feel comfortable wearing this with a t-shirt and pair of jeans because, in my opinion and the opinion of many others in the watch industry, black alligator is strictly a dress material. Even though dress standards have laxed since the Carter administration, this code has stood the test of time. With that said, the black alligator really dresses up the tool watch and makes it ready for my next black-tie event. The scales add a nice texture too.

TWR 5

Conclusion

Hadley Roma is the best major, all-purpose strap maker out there. Their straps are bargains for the quality and craftsmanship and they tend to hold up quite a long time with typical use. The Hadley Roma Black Alligator Strap is no exception. The leather and materials are quality and feel of wearing alligator is worth the price tag alone. I would definitely recommend anyone who is wanting to spice up their watch and give it a more luxury feel to check out Total Watch Repair’s strap selection. While you are at it, take a look at their services, especially if your watch is in need of a little TLC.

WOTANCRAFT RANGER CAMERA BAG + WATERPROOF INSERT COMBO SET – $549.00

In our last review with Wotancraft, we were introduced to their striking Ryker camera bag which combined a compact sized carry with excellent craftsmanship and detailed features. Unlike Biz Markie, Wotancraft is no one trick pony, they offer a full selection of carry options. We were very excited to review one of their larger and more rugged bags, The Wotancraft  Ranger Camera Bag + Waterproof Insert Combo Set.

WotancraftRanger (5)

CONSTRUCTION

Wotancraft’s Ranger is primarily fabricated from their W.A.L. (Water-repellent, abrasion-resistant, lightweight) waxed canvas. All metal hardware is used for the buttons and buckles. The large front flap is made from specially ordered sheepskin and the strap is constructed from full grain leather. All straps are reinforced with a Box X pattern stitch for added strength. The removable interior is a U shaped foam padded insert with a microfiber interior, and features removable velcro padded partitions for separating gear.

WotancraftRanger (1)

The same interior configuration for the padded insert is used in the waterproof insert which Wotancraft describes as a “Waterproof insert made of hovercraft-grade thermoforming technique, making the insert fully waterproof all the way up to the zipper height. The zipper itself is YKK water-repellent zipper with edge sealing, capable of sustaining temporary drowning when fully zipped.”

WotancraftRanger (3)

So yeah, you can totally take this bag crocodile shooting. If one tips your boat, just rest assured that while you might not be found, at least your camera will be intact. The bag itself (excluding inserts) weighs in at 3lbs 8 oz. The microfiber insert weighs just over a pound and the waterproof insert comes in at 1lb 11oz. Bag dimensions are 12” high, 16” wide and 7” deep.

FUNCTION

If you’re carrying expensive camera equipment, rest assured it will be very protected in the Ranger. The U shaped insert offers ample foam padding on the bottom, sides and top. This bag is able to carry multiple DSLR’s and lenses. The smaller side pockets are great for memory cards and spare batteries. The flap allows quick access to your gear, and you can zip up the main compartment when you feel the need to keep your contents secure. Just by handling the bag, one can notice how much thought went into functionality. The button snaps have small finger pockets under them to allow you to close them one handed by pinching them shut rather than pressing.

WotancraftRanger (4)

The Ranger is more than just a camera bag. Thanks to the removable inserts, the Ranger doubles as a great overnight bag, I was able to smartly pack for a overnight stay. You can fit a 15” laptop no problem, and the interior zippered compartment is great for tablets or books. The bottom has leather straps great for attaching a tripod or spare jacket as well making this bag a great option for someone desiring a multipurpose carry option.

WotancraftRanger (2)

AESTHETIC

The great thing about the Ranger….is that it actually looks just as good if not better than it does in pictures. It’s rugged without being over the top, and refined enough to transition from outdoors to city effortlessly. Waxed canvas, much like leather, only gets better with age, so expect character to develop with use. The grey canvas will be more forgiving and be able to hide stains and markings which I really appreciate as well. With an aesthetic that really conjures up adventure, the Ranger really lives up to its namesake.

WotancraftRanger (10)

CONCLUSION

Good looks, versatility and quality construction make this bag a triple threat. With a hefty price tag of 549.00,  The Wotancraft  Ranger Camera Bag + Waterproof Insert Combo Set isn’t for everyone. If you really like the bag but don’t feel the need for the waterproof insert you can nab a Wotancraft Ranger for $499. Either route you go you’re getting a top notch bag that does a lot more than carry your camera.

Mario Latorre Baroni Rustico Review – $385

Working with leather companies has grown to be one of my favorite things. From the initial email to the phone call discussing a company and its products, it is truly a unique and enjoyable job. I have dealt with numerous leather companies, and each time I am always impressed with their passion and purpose in the leather field. Every company has a different take on products and an individual style. Mario Latorre has consistently been one of the most enjoyable companies to work with. Their passion for quality, masculine style, and truly high-quality bags were enough to make me ask for a round two. This time around we’ll be looking at the Baroni Rustico—a rustic take on a modern style bag.

Mario Latorre Baroni Rustico 8

About Mario Latorre

We discovered Mario Latorre at a Las Vegas fashion expo, where they invited us in to their booth to talk and show off a beautiful line of leather products. Their products immediately impressed the BestLeather team. It was a genuinely enjoyable and informative encounter. Right from their “About Us” tab: “At Mario Latorre, we strive to bring classy and trendy designs to the modern man, with superb materials gathered from various countries. Elegance, quality and attention to detail is our mission, and we provide our customers with a unique experience and total satisfaction.”

This company is dedicated to the fashionable man, and the Baroni Rustico is a perfect example of this philosophy. Once again I am more than pleased to have the opportunity to work with Mario Latorre and their elegant products.

Mario Latorre Baroni Rustico 4

Mario Latorre Baroni Rustico 6

Construction and Function

The Baroni Rustico boasts Nano-technology treated leather– the same leather used in BMW and McLaren automobile interiors. It undergoes numerous tests for quality and is absolutely long lasting. Like the previous Mario Latorre bag I reviewed, the Bottini, the invisible layer of Nano-technology has come in handy several times this year. The outside, which has a large slim pocket running across the length, features a phone sleeve, card slots, and several penholders for easy organization that stays flat underneath the flap. This is convenient so you don’t have to unzip the main pouch to access your stuff. The inside of the bag is quite minimalistic, with one main zippered pouch and a smaller zippered pocket along the back.

Mario Latorre Baroni Rustico3

Built 14” long by 12” high and just 3” wide, this bag stays nice and slim. There’s not a ton of room, but you can easily fit a laptop and notebook. I have taken this messenger to several coffee shops and stores, and every time it does its job flawlessly. The organizational pouches on the front also give everything a specific place to maintain that slim look. Two strong hidden magnets keep the flap closed while eliminating the need for a buckle, again adding to the sleek look.

Aesthetic

The Baroni Rustico is a rustic style of the classic messenger mixed with modern essentials. The inside of the bag is minimal, but not to the point of ineffectiveness. The deep brown color does not clash with anything, and it always looks sophisticated when worn because of its simple, stylish design. The shoulder strap is quite comfortable, and can also easily be adjusted to your body. I have been pleased time and again with how this bag performs, appears, and feels, especially after several compliments on the Baroni Rustico when I would wear it out. It is extremely obvious that this bag is high quality. If you are looking for a modern messenger bag that still has the rustic, masculine appearance, I highly recommend the Baroni Rustico.

Mario Latorre Baroni RusticoMario Latorre Baroni Rustico7

Conclusion

Overall I am very pleased by my experiences with Mario Latorre and their stylish products. Both leather bags I have reviewed are extremely well made. The Baroni Rustico is a solid choice for the guy in search of a modern, slim bag with a rustic edge. While the price tag may seem a bit high at $385, the Baroni Rustico is definitely worth the investment. Head over to Mario Latorre’s website and check out their fine selection of leather products and accessories.

Total Watch Repair Honey Genuine Alligator Leather Watch Strap Review $249.95

Purchasing a new watch band is a great way to add some renewed interest in an old timepiece. A lot like going into your closet to find an outfit for a special occasion, simply changing bands can add a whole new character to your wrist watch. We’ve reviewed a number of watch bands so we were particularly excited to test out a Banda Honey Genuine Alligator Leather Watch Strap offered by Total Watch Repair.

Alligator (3)

About

Established in 1992, Total Watch Repair is a family owned business located in Los Angeles. Members of the American Watchmakers-Clockmakers Institute and the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors, they specialize in watch repair. You can also purchase timepieces at their retail outlet, and with an A+ rating from the BBB, they’re about as legit as any horophile could hope to be.

Alligator (7)

CONSTRUCTION

The strap is made from…you guessed it, genuine alligator skin. It’s a matte finish with a honey color. Matching thread keeps the color uniform and a silver plated buckle completes the look. The alligator leather is pretty flexible and shows some interesting scaling, but aside from that looks almost identical to cow’s leather from a distance. It is a really thin leather with an almost synthetic smoothness. The buckle feels a bit cheap and doesn’t exude quality. The watch’s backside indicates it is made by Banda, a global strap manufacturer so I don’t place blame on Total Watch Repair.

Alligator (2)

FUNCTION

Alligator (9)

The strap does it’s job of keeping the timepiece secure on my wrist. There is one fixed strap keeper and one floating keeper that keep excess strap neatly contained. There is no discomforting pinch from the buckle when moving the wrist, and the notch spacing allowed for a good fit. A watch strap’s main purpose is to keep it on your wrist, and this strap carries this task out like any other.

Alligator (8)

AESTHETIC

The strap doesn’t offer the “wow” factor I was expecting. I would have liked to have seen deeper scaling, and perhaps some scarring. Just something that gave testament to the fact that this was made from the hide of one of nature’s most deadliest predators. Aside from the creases, this just looks like a very subdued, cheap leather strap. It’s a formal design, I chose to wear it with my suit and found it could barely pull off the look. Much like the Big Mac at McDonalds, this strap looks better in staged pictures than it does in person.

Alligator (4)

CONCLUSION

Here at BestLeather we like to give every product received a fair chance. I personally cannot recommend the Banda Honey Genuine Alligator Leather Watch Strap. Priced at a premium of $249.95, there are such better options out there from skilled crafters. However, Total Watch Repair continues to stand out as an exemplary timepiece service center and offers many other promising bands at very affordable prices.

Norman Cahn Leatherworks Cabrio Wallet Review – $99.99

It’s always a pleasure to get a second or third piece of stellar leather from a brand we’ve reviewed in the past. It’s an even greater pleasure when you’re receiving a piece from someone who is widely regarded as a true artisan in the leather craft world. I’m pleased to introduce you to the cleverly designed Cabrio Wallet from Norman Cahn Leatherworks.

About Norman Cahn Leatherworks

Norman Cahn is a self-taught leather artisan. He started designing and crafting leather products in 1976. And since that time, he’s refined his skills and continues to strive for perfection in his craft. His expert skills and dedication to creating high quality products is evident in every piece…large or small. We suggest that you visit Norm’s Etsy store in order to take a look at all of the fine leather products he creates. This is the third piece of Norm’s that we’ve had the pleasure to receive for review. Be sure to read our reviews on his Passport Case and Field Notes Cover. This time around, we’re checking out his Cabrio Wallet.

Norman-Cahn-Leatherworks-Cabrio-Wallet-5

Construction

The Horween Leather features a deep, rich burgundy color complimented with chestnut nylon stitching, which is impeccable. It also includes Norm’s signature polished and finished edges that look fantastic. The snap on my model has an antique brass finish. You can choose other snap finishes and thread colors when ordering from Norman Cahn Leatherworks.

Functionality

This has been a fun wallet to use. It has a non-traditional orientation that seems to instantly get noticed. Just about every time I use it, the clerk, barista, or server comments on it. It’s a noticeably different design…and I like it.

The inspiration behind the Cabrio wallet can be found in your favorite drop top automobile – taking cues from the way convertible top vehicles (aka Cabriolets) operate. When you open the Cabrio Wallet, you’ll notice that the functionality is similar to the way the convertible top on an automobile opens and tucks away back into itself.

This ingenious vertically oriented design only measures 3″W x 4 1/8″H when closed. Even when I have it loaded up with my license, debit card, three or 4 other cards and cash, it maintains a slim profile (less than ¾”). I’ve found it to be a great front pocket wallet option too. The slim nature of the wallet is perfect.

Aesthetic

The design, the leather quality, the artisanal build quality all combine to create a very pleasing product. Norm’s logo is tastefully placed on the back of the wallet and, for those of you who are major Horween fans, their stamp is emblazoned prominently on the inside.

The Cabrio Wallet is simple yet sophisticated, minimal yet capable of satisfying most traditional bifold wallet carrying folks demands. I can’t decide whether I want to reserve this wallet as my “professional, dressier occasions wallet” or just use it all of the time. That is still to be determined (although it seems to be in my pocket most of the time now)…even when I’m in casual mode.

Conclusion

The Norman Cahn Leatherworks Cabrio Wallet definitely maintains the superior quality of the pieces I’ve reviewed in the past. To that end, at $99.99, it definitely qualifies as a Buy It for Life item. Be sure to visit the Norman Cahn Leatherworks website – we’re confident you’ll find several must have items there!

REVISIT Journal Review – $210

What’s your favorite National Park? Mine is Yosemite National Park, but it’s hard to choose given all the incredible places America’s park system has to offer. The U.S. National Parks Service has been caring for our park lands since 1916. Today they manage 401 separate parks, monuments, and preserves– over 84 million acres of some of America’s most beautiful and historic places.

REVISIT, a lifestyle brand out of Los Angeles, California, knows how to appreciate these parks. A quarter of their profit goes to directly supporting national parks preservation projects. Today I’ll be looking at the REVISIT Journal.

Revisit Journal 8

About REVISIT

REVISIT’s founders were inspired by traveling in the National Parks and recognizing the need to preserve them for future generations. REVISIT operates on a quarter-back model, meaning they have pledged to donate a quarter of their profits to parks preservation in the U.S. National Parks system. Their goal is to both support our parks system and create a conversation about preserving the stories and places that are dear to us as a nation.

REVISIT partners directly with the national parks and their support organizations and currently contribute directly to specific projects occurring in three parks systems across the nation: Sequoia Parks Foundation in California, Olympic National Park in Washington, and Glacier National Park in Montana. In the past, they’ve supported other projects in Acadia National Park in Maine and Independence National Historical Park in Pennsylvania. Take a look at their Vision page to learn more about the specifics of these important projects.

THE LEATHER

The Journal is part of the Founder’s Collection, for which REVISIT uses vegetable tanned leather that is hand treated with natural waxes, oils, and water based pigments during the finishing process. The cows are farm-raised and the hides are treated with mimosa tree extract and lime in order to be as environmentally friendly as possible. The process occurs at REVISIT’s leather finishing factory in Los Angeles, California, the only finishing plant on the West Coast.

The leather used for this journal cover is extremely soft and supple. It has a very smooth, luxurious feel. The brown has a reddish chestnut hue with a subtle sheen.

Construction & Function

Each REVISIT product is designed and constructed entirely in the United States, at their factory in Los Angeles. You can read a bit about the process on their Artisans page. The journal cover is constructed of one solid, supple piece of leather, envelope style. The flap is secured with a small piece of leather threaded through a logo-emblazoned loop at the front, held together with small brass rivets.

The journal is made to fit a 7″ x 9″ Shinola Journal, which is included. There is also a sleeve for an iPad Mini as well as three standard-sized card slots, a windowed business card holder, and a pen loop.

The supple leather means this journal cover opens easily and lays flat when writing in the notebook. The iPad is meant to slide into a pocket on the left side, however there is a bit of an issue with this. The rivets from the front of the journal also extend into this pocket, meaning there is a little piece of metal just waiting to scratch up your iPad. I’ve found that you can swap the position of the journal and the iPad, but this is a bit of an oversight. Hopefully this issue will be fixed in the next round of design.

CONCLUSION

The REVISIT Journal is a very useful piece made of a gorgeous piece of leather, all crafted by American artisans. If you’re not planning on using it for an iPad, it would be a great piece for everyday use. $210 is a hefty price for a journal cover, but you are getting a beautiful Shinola Journal that retails for $14, as well as making a direct donation to our priceless National Parks. There’s also a 10% off coupon that pops up on their website for new customers, so be sure to grab that when you pick up your new product from REVISIT.

HIDES Canada Leather Tech Tote Review – $266

Whether you’re a student, self-employed, or a full-time office worker, chances are, in 2015, you bring your laptop with you everywhere. And when you usually carry a purse as well, it’s nice to be able to combine them so you don’t have bags hanging all over you like a pack mule.

Today I’ll be looking at the HIDES Canada Leather Tech Tote as an everyday laptop tote bag.

Hides Canada Tech Tote 1

ABOUT HIDES CANADA

HIDES Canada is a new brand out of Toronto, Canada. Their product line includes messenger bags, totes, duffels, wallets, and a dopp kit. From their website:

HIDES was inspired by the age old leather making tradition in the subcontinent region of Punjab and Northern Kashmir. We are committed to bridge the gap between man and nature during these complex processes. The way the leather is being crafted – these methods have been used since the past 35 years and only the best had crafted skins are used for our products. This ensures that our products are not only, eco-friendly, but also handcrafted to perfection; which only get better with age!Hides Canada Tech Tote 5

THE LEATHER

HIDES Canada uses a full-grain leather with a distressed look. The leather used at HIDES is unique, as it comes from the region of Punjab in the subcontinent and Northern Kashmir. The animals in these parts of the world are free to roam and are exposed to harsh climates and temperatures. Extreme conditions like these make the animals’ skins thick and extremely adaptable to their surroundings, which produced a very tough and unique leather. The leather they use is full-grain, and is often referred to as Crazy Horse leather. Crazy Horse leather is a thick pullup leather that is finished with natural oils and waxes, which gives the leather a distressed, rugged look and finish. The leather on the Tech Tote is very unique looking. It darkens up in certain areas, while maintaining the lighter areas, giving it great texture.

CONSTRUCTION & FUNCTION

The Tech Tote features a large main pouch with a padded sleeve that fits up to a 15″ laptop and is secured with a velcro strap. The opposite side has a large zippered pouch, a phone sleeve, two pen loops, and a small multipurpose pouch. There are just enough pouches to keep you organized but not overwhelmed.

Hides Canada Tech Tote 2

The middle of the bag is nice and roomy, and is made even larger with the zippered gussets on each side. Just unzip the sides and the tote expands significantly. This also adds a bit of stability to the bag if you’d like it to stand up on its own. This is an awesome feature that works especially great if you are carrying around papers or files. The expansion feature on the Tech Tote works flawlessly. Some bags have this feature but the gussets are not solid leather like Tech Tote, and items fall out the sides or get caught in the zipper. It’s clear that a lot of thought was put into the functionality of this tote.

Hides Canada Tech Tote 6

The outside of the bag features zippered pockets on the front and back. The front of the bag displays two stitched pieces of leather, in slightly contrasting colors, giving some visual appeal and texture to the bag. The inside is lined with olive and khaki fabric, which contrasts nicely while remaining in the same color palette.

Hides Canada Tech Tote 8

The handles are the perfect length for over-the-shoulder carry if you prefer. The tote comes with a 46″ shoulder strap that attaches to D-rings on the inside of the gusset with lobster claw clasps. It is adjustable via a heel bar and has a small pad for comfort. The shoulder strap is really the only part of this bag that I am not a fan of. The strap feels cheap, brittle, and flimsy. This is an issue I’ve noticed with a lot of bags on the market, where detachable shoulder straps seem like an afterthought. Thankfully the attached handles are very sturdy and comfortable.

Hides Canada Tech Tote 4

AESTHETIC

At 15″x12.5″x5″, the Tech Tote is nice and compact when it comes to laptop bags. In fact, it’s not really that much larger than many purses. I’ve found that it doesn’t stand out as a laptop bag and can easily double as a purse. It’s usable in tons of different settings, and its tan color makes it quite versatile. It’s not too crazy or modern, and functions perfectly for everyday use. I have been told that this bag will soon be available in black, as well, so keep an eye out for that! I think black leather will look great.

Hides Canada Tech Tote 10

CONCLUSION

I’ve been quite pleased with the HIDES Canada Leather Tech Tote. It’s the perfect color, shape, and size for everyday carry. It’s well-constructed and the Crazy Horse Leather will only look better and more interesting with age. $266 USD is a reasonable price for a very useful bag that will last you for years.
