The Best Made Gfeller Document Case Review – $325

The Best Made Company was brought to my attention by Steve Derricot, the Owner of Gfeller Casemakers.  I was visiting his shop discussing some other projects, and I noticed a very unique looking case that was under production.  My inquisitive nature took over and Steve happily showed me the case they were making for a New York company called Best Made.  When I say case, I mean a large brief that is capable of holding a number of documents, an Ipad, small laptop, or similar, and that is molded so as to add structure and security for its contents.

Like all of Steve’s work, I was impressed by the craftsmanship and beauty of this simple case.  I reached out to Best Made to gauge their interest in having us review their Gfeller Document Case and lo and behold here we are with the review.  Before jumping into the review though, let’s look a bit at the Best Made Company.

Best Made Company

The Best Made Company was formed by Peter Buchanann-Smith in 2009 out of a desire to create a better axe.  He not only wanted a better axe, but wanted to connect people back to wilderness and nature, and to encourage exploration of the great outdoors.  Best Made partnered with one of America’s oldest and esteemed axe makers and designed their first proprietary axe, made to compete with the best axes on the market.

The Best Made Gfeller Document Case6

Designing and manufacturing the very best axe possible became the blueprint for the design and manufacture of many outdoors related products – knives, maps, tools, clothing, camp supplies, bags and cases.  Personally, I have purchased a number of products from Best Made and find that the products I purchased live up to the name of the company.  The Gfeller Document Case is no exception.

Construction

The Gfeller Document case is built with sturdiness and rigor in mind.  It is built from just three pieces of premium leather – the back and top flap, the inner pocket, and the molded front.  The inner pocket is designed to allow for snug protection of documents or a thin tablet.  The front of the case is molded, something that Gfeller specializes in, and something that gives this case its unique feature and function.  It allows for an inner compartment that is roughly 1 ⅛” deep, which is ample space for a number of documents, maps, or thin electronics.

The Best Made Gfeller Document Case1

The Gfeller Case is stitched together with Gfeller’s thread of choice – linen.  The stitching on the case is not perfectly straight, which could bother some that are used to machine made products.  This does not affect the durability of the case in any way, and is more of an indication of a hand made, artisanal product, which it is.  The choice of linen is contrary to what many other leather bag manufacturers are using today – polyester and nylon.  Gfeller has been using linen since it’s inception in 1946.  One look at a wall in Gfellers studio that displays bags and accessories that are many decades old makes the point clearly, linen can hold up to the test of time.  These goods are still held perfectly together and though beaten up, could still perform their intended function today.

The upper corners of the case are each riveted with a nickel plated brass rivet, to add strength and durability to the case.  The case is finished off with a brass button snap made specifically for Best Made.

The Leather

The leather used for the contstruction of the Gfeller case is the same used for most of Gfeller’s products – Hermann Oak’s russet skirting leather.  This is full grain leather, the toughest and in my opinion most beautiful, and is eight and a half ounces thick (approximately ⅛ of an inch).  It is tanned through and is a natural color, which is beautiful in its own right, but will naturally darken and take on a patina with time and use.

The Best Made Gfeller Document Case2

The edges of the case are finished by hand using wax and a whole lot of friction.  The beauty of vegetable tanned leather is that it can be burnished to a tighter, slightly darker grain, giving the leather a more finished look and also adds to the durability.  Gfeller has fine tuned this process and the result is beautifully finished edges that practically shine.  According to Steve, if you apply too much friction you can actually burn the edges, making them weaker.  Too little friction and you still have edges that can fray.  It takes an expert touch to burnish in such a way as to leave a beautiful shine with a tight grain.  Gfeller nails that here.

Function

The Gfeller Document Case is meant to transport essential documents or maps securely from one place to another.  Many a plastic cases could be purchased for the same price as one Gfeller Document Case to accomplish this use, but none have the same panache and none will last as long as this case.  The Gfeller case does not have a shoulder strap, so it is not meant to be carried like a traditional leather bag.  I could see a college professor using the case to transport papers from office to class, I could see a national park ranger carrying his or her maps in this case, and I can see a lawyer carrying important briefs to a case or meeting.

The Best Made Gfeller Document Case5

This is not a laptop case, though it can carry a small laptop (my 13″ Macbook Air fit snugly), and it is not meant to replace a messenger bag or satchel.  It has a fairly specific use, but within that use, the Gfeller Document Case can be used in a variety of ways.

The Best Made Gfeller Document Case4Best Leather Conclusion

The Gfeller Document Case by Best Made is a hand made tool for keeping secure and transporting important documents and electronics in an elegant way.  It is made by expert hands in a small studio in Meridian, Idaho with some of the best vegetable tanned leather that can be purchased.  The look and feel of the Gfeller Document Case screams artisan, and will surely be a tool that can be used for decades.

Kendal & Hyde Medium Classic Leather Satchel – First Impressions

The team at BestLeather has the privilege of seeing lots and lots of leather products. Since we’re leather aficionados (aka leather nerds), we think of it as a major perk for being part of this team. But, even for us there are those times when we see a leather bag or another product and remark to anyone who’s willing to listen, “oh…they really got that one right.” Those are the words I uttered when I opened the email from Kendal & Hyde regarding their newest bag, the Classic Leather Satchel.

Kendal-Hyde-Classic-Satchel-7

About Kendal & Hyde

Kendal & Hyde is located in Salt Lake City, UT and San Francisco, CA. They have a great eye for design and details. This is evident when you look at the list of successful Kickstarters (now on their 4th) they’ve created since 2014. Their products are functional, appealing, and built to stand the rigors of daily use and time.

Kendal-Hyde-Classic-Satchel-2

Construction

The Medium Classic Leather Satchel we received here is a working prototype of what’s to come in their production run. Said production run is guaranteed to happen now that they’ve eclipsed their Kickstarter goal of $50k (they are now well on their way to doubling that number).

If you’re a veg tan fan…you’re in luck here. The Classic Leather Satchel is 100% vegetable tanned leather. It’s being featured in natural, black, and medium brown colors. The leather is thick and only slightly stiff. This is a bag that will definitely develop a gorgeous patina over time.

Kendal-Hyde-Classic-Satchel-8

It also comes in three sizes:

  • Large – 17.75″W x 13″H x 9″D
  • Medium –15.75″W x 12″H x 9″D
  • Small – 14.25″W x 11″H x 6″D

Kendal-Hyde-Classic-Satchel-6

All three sizes contain the same features and design elements. This Kickstarter has generated some very interesting conversations in some of the leather groups we follow on Facebook. The overwhelming majority of those discussions have been very positive and supportive. However, there are always those who like to make comparisons or make unsupported claims of duplicating another design. I’m never a fan of those comparisons and complaints. I often find them unfounded and usually untrue. The cold hard truth is that there are only so many ways to create a satchel-styled bag. This version is in fact, very unique in several ways:

  • the Buffalo nickel on the handle wrap
  • full vegetable tanned leather
  • the thickness of shoulder pad is amazing
  • it features a single piece side and bottom—no seam in the center
  • hardware that is unrivaled in quality (solid brass)
  • the center pocket is for a laptop and is designed to keep it from being bumped from any direction…a very unique and effective strategy.
  • includes a dedicated iPad pocket that also keeps it from being knocked around as well
  • the unique, modular aspect, which allows for additional pockets, straps, and accessories to be added to the satchel for personal customization. The line of accessories will continue to be developed and works on all of the satchels in this line (and will work with future designs too)

Kendal-Hyde-Classic-Satchel-9

So, as you can see there are many elements here that differentiate the Kendal & Hyde Satchel. Personally, I’m thrilled to see the modular design aspect incorporated. It’s brilliant. As a fan of vintage Swiss Army leather goods, I really like the design of the single and triple pouches…which definitely hearken back to the ammunition pouches from the Swiss Army.

Kendal-Hyde-Classic-Satchel-10

Function

Since this is a prototype, we haven’t had the luxury of using this as rigorously or as long as we usually do when putting together our reviews. However, the feel of this bag, the quality of construction, and the design elements included lead us to believe that this bag will perform its role for you in high style and perfection.

We look forward to being able to report on regular usage once we receive the production models. We’ll be featuring full reviews of those in just a couple of months.

Kendal-Hyde-Classic-Satchel-11

Aesthetic

Clean lines, exceptional build quality, and top of the line components all blend together for a visually appealing feast. Sounds cheesy but it’s true. The Kendal & Hyde Classic Satchel exudes class and style in my opinion. It appears that it will look great whether it’s carried over the shoulder, cross body, or in backpack mode.

Conclusion

The Kickstarter for the Kendal & Hyde Classic Satchel is still going. Secure one in the size and color you want and you’ll save about $100 off the normal price. Also, all of the modular pieces and other accessories are discounted. We’ve had a total of four reviewers from our team check out this Kendal & Hyde Satchel. The overwhelming consensus is that we highly recommend that you get one ordered for yourself. It’s definitely a Buy It for Life Satchel that you’ll be able to hand down for many generations.

Waskerd Brea Zipper Wallet Review — $115

You know how they say the best chefs don’t just pay attention to taste but also to presentation? When my Waskerd Brea Zipper Wallet arrived in the mail, my mind went straight to those masterful chefs. Right away, the extreme attention to detail impressed me—the personalized note, the way it was wrapped as a gift in a colorful cloth and string, even the business card made of leather. The wallet itself just continued this same impressive theme of detail-oriented precision. In fact, it made me want to meet the person who’d put so much care into the making.

Waskerd-Brea-Zipper-Wallet-Review-0002-DSC00855

Waskerd-Brea-Zipper-Wallet-Review-0003-DSC00860

About Waskerd

These days most products come from factories and assembly lines, which removes the human touch and personal connection from the process and the purchase. Waskerd’s mission is to re-form the human connection that has gone missing. They run a small, family business and make each of their products by hand, including the sweet wallet I’ve been carrying in my pocket for the last while.

Waskerd-Brea-Zipper-Wallet-Review-0006_MG_6420

Construction

The Brea Zipper Wallet is made from a high-quality 100% full-grain leather. Full-grain means the leather was taken from the outside surface of the hide, which means more character because of beautiful imperfections. It also has the highest durability—it’s the same skin that protects against the elements and barbed wire.

Waskerd-Brea-Zipper-Wallet-Review-0005-DSC00868

The surface of my Brea is smooth and initially had a slight gloss to it. As I broke it in, the surface got rougher, which made the wallet even more aesthetically pleasing than before. The zipper has a rugged, heavy-duty feel, and I don’t doubt that it’ll last a lifetime.

Waskerd also has a satisfaction guarantee: If you don’t like something about your wallet, they’ll make it right or give you your money back. That’s a promise that’s hard to beat. It makes me trust their quality, and it makes the purchase low-risk for you as well.

Waskerd-Brea-Zipper-Wallet-Review-0012_MG_6441

Function

While most people like the idea of minimalism, sometimes it can be hard to carry out—too hard getting rid of things. If this sounds like something you’d say, then the Brea Zipper Wallet is for you. It’s small compared to most wallets, but it’s bigger than the ultra minimalist ones, meaning there’s plenty of room for as many cards, bills, checks, coupons, and photos as you might need. I personally like to go as minimal as possible, and this wallet is just slightly large for my taste—that’s really my only critique. If you find yourself in the same boat, Waskerd has an amazing lineup of other wallets, and you’re certain to find one that fits—and all with the same high quality.

Waskerd-Brea-Zipper-Wallet-Review-0004-DSC00866

One thing I love about this wallet is the zipper, a feature I didn’t realize I’d love till I tried it. The zipper seals up tight, so you can throw it around as you’re traveling and you don’t have to worry about your coin collection or guitar picks slipping out—they’ll be very secure. That’s a bonus you don’t see in most wallets, and something I’ve grown to love the longer I’ve had it.

Waskerd-Brea-Zipper-Wallet-Review-0011_MG_6431

The Brea also has an interesting design. On the outside, it’s simply one large pocket with a zipper. But inside it contains what they call an “inverted gusset.” As you can see in the pictures, one of the walls of the main pocket is taken inward, spanning the center in an extra fold. This gives you room for additional organization. In short, it turns one large pocket into three, and it does this cleverly, without adding much extra thickness.

Waskerd-Brea-Zipper-Wallet-Review-0010_MG_6430

Aesthetic

The Brea Zipper’s unique design has a lot of style—a certain panache that’s sure to raise eyebrows. The stitching is precise, and yet it has just enough subtle variation to prove that it isn’t some product crunched out by a machine. Again, you’ll notice the human touch, and so will your friends and associates if they have an eye for that sort of thing.

You can get it in a variety of colors too, so you’re certain to find one that matches your taste. I went with the “limousin brown” with white stitching, and I really like it. Has a lot of class.

Waskerd-Brea-Zipper-Wallet-Review-0009_MG_6425

BestLeather Conclusion

If you’re looking for a minimal wallet that has plenty of room, I highly recommend the Waskerd Brea Zipper Wallet. It’s tough, sleek, spacious, and the highest quality, all backed by a promise that guarantees you won’t regret your choice.

Wilsons Leather Black Rivet Distressed Leather Duffel Review – $350

You travel the world, making your mark wherever you go. You look good. Is that enough, or do you want to look damn good? As I wrapped my hands around the handle of the Wilson Black Rivet Distressed Leather Duffel, I had answered my own question. The genuine leather exterior with contrast stitching, accented by distressed metal hardware had me looking for an excuse to plan my next overnight business trip.

Wilsons-Leather-Black-Rivet-Distressed-Leather-Duffel-001

About Wilsons Leather

Wilsons Leather came about in 1986 as the merger of Berman’s Buckskin, founded in 1899 when fringed buckskin shirts and jackets were de rigueur, and Wilsons House of Suede and Leather, made famous in the 1940s for its suede and leather apparel. The Melville Corporation merged the two companies into Wilson’s Leather in 1986. Today, after a series of acquisitions and brand name changes, Wilsons Leather products can still be found online and in its outlet stores across the United States.

Construction

The Wilsons Leather Black Rivet Distressed Leather Duffel is crafted with cow leather weighing a mere 1 pound, 11 ounces and uses a semi-chrome tanning process, giving the leather a soft, supple feel. The dark brown leather is complemented by contrast stitching and antiqued brass hardware on the padded leather handles and removable nylon carrying strap.

Wilsons-Leather-Black-Rivet-Distressed-Leather-Duffel-002

Turn the bag over, and you’ll encounter the same antiqued brass on the protective metal feet riveted to the structured base. At 21” W x 11” H x 10” D, there is plenty of space for two to three days of travel in this carry-on bag. It is just under the FAA guidelines of being less than 45 inches in total dimensions for carry-ons, so its sizing is perfect.

Wilsons-Leather-Black-Rivet-Distressed-Leather-Duffel-009

The interior is constructed of a black rip-stop nylon featuring a zip-across pocket and organizer panel with a cell phone holder and four slots for bank cards. The cell phone sleeve held my wife’s Galaxy S3 phone, but will not fit phones much larger. The zip-across pocket neatly holds any extras you’ll need for a two or three-day trip.

Wilsons-Leather-Black-Rivet-Distressed-Leather-Duffel-003

Wilsons-Leather-Black-Rivet-Distressed-Leather-Duffel-008

Function and Aesthetic

The Black Rivet Distressed Leather Duffel is sans doubt your go bag. If you need more space than this bag provides, it means you’ll be checking a bag at the airport. Sling the bag over your shoulder, and you won’t get uncomfortable with the leather-padded carrying strap. The two leather carrying handles are well-stitched, and afford another way to carry the bag. The hardware is heavy duty, so you won’t have to worry about the bag coming apart. The darker brown leather goes well paired with most any color, and stands outs by its looks alone.

Wilsons-Leather-Black-Rivet-Distressed-Leather-Duffel-006

I didn’t use the cell phone pouch or credit card pouch much, as I keep those items in my wallet or in my pocket. They might have been better replaced by another zippered pouch, but you may still find them useful when you’re in a hurry.

Wilsons-Leather-Black-Rivet-Distressed-Leather-Duffel-007

Conclusion

Distressed leather is very popular for a reason – it is beautiful when crafted well. The Black Rivet Distressed Leather Duffel exemplifies this beauty in its masculine appeal. Unsolicited compliments are common when I’m carrying this bag to and from my downtown office. It retails for $350 and is worth every penny, but you won’t be paying that much for it. It is $169.99 through Wilson’s Leather online, and if you happen to live close to a Wilson’s Leather Outlet store, you may find it for even more of a steal than that.

Steve Madden Nathen Boots Review – $140

I like boots. They’re my preferred footwear for just about any occasion. My wife says I have a problem. Obviously, I disagree. Boots are awesome. Need something casual? Boots. Need to dress up? Boots. Need to go do some work? Boots. Need something waterproof? Boots. Going hunting? Boots. Going hiking? Boots. Get the idea? In my latest boot review episode, we’re going to be taking a look at the Nathen Boots from Steve Madden.

Steve-Madden-Nathen-Boots-Review-4.jpg

About Steve Madden

Steve Madden has been an iconic footwear name for many years in the women’s fashion line. After such a successful 10 year stint there, Steve Madden Men’s line was launched. Starting as a primarily casual line, Steve Madden Men’s has evolved into a lifestyle brand. The desire is to give guys many options to wear their products for different aspects of his week – day to evening, work to weekend.

Steve-Madden-Nathen-Boots-Review-8.jpg

Steve-Madden-Nathen-Boots-Review-6.jpg

Construction

The Nathen Boots are made in Asia will full leather uppers, cemented construction, a split suede lining, and synthetic sole. I’m not sure where the leather is sourced. The leather is soft and supple, stitching is even and nicely done, and the zipper and eyelets feature an antique brass finish.

Steve-Madden-Nathen-Boots-Review-9.jpg

Steve-Madden-Nathen-Boots-Review-7.jpg

Function

Upon opening the box, several of my senses were very pleased. Initially, I was greeted by a delicious smell. If you’re a long time reader here, you’ve heard a few of us comment on the awesome aroma associated with certain brands and these boots totally remind me of that same, rich, aromatic leather scent. Upon holding these boots, I was immediately impressed with the leather. It’s very flexible and soft to the touch. Then visually, I was pleased with the build quality and styling of these boots. This is the first pair of boots I’ve had with side zippers and now, they won’t be the last pair I have. They are easy on and easy off. In fact, you can leave them laced up and just “slip, zip, and go”. Awesome.

Sizing (for me) is spot on. I usually wear an 11.5 and these are perfect. The low heel and traditional lug sole are all day long comfortable. And, there is no break in period at all.

Steve-Madden-Nathen-Boots-Review-3.jpg

Aesthetic

As mentioned earlier, I almost always wear boots. When I get a pair in for review, I tend to get comments at client meetings, at church, and lots of other locations. However, to date these Steve Madden Nathen Boots have generated more comments and questions than any other pair of boots I’ve reviewed. Their eye-catching color, along with the brogue styling combines well to draw people’s eye to them. And, people like them…a lot.

The Nathen Boots do a superb job of allowing you to either dress up or go casual with this boot. They look great with dress pants, yet will also look fantastic with a pair of jeans.

Steve-Madden-Nathen-Boots-Review-10

Conclusion

The Steve Madden Nathen Boots are a great deal for the money. Will they last for years and years? Depends on how often you wear them and how well you treat them. They’re certainly not a custom or high-end handmade boot. But, they’re also only $140…a price that most people can afford. And for that price you get a great looking pair of boots that give you lots of options on how you’re going to wear them. These boots are available in tan (color featured here), brown, and black. As a fashion footwear brand, Steve Madden Men’s has hit a ‘homerun’ with the Nathen boots. They incorporate good quality leather in a desirable style at a decent price point. The Nathen Boots are available from many different retailers such as Dillards, Macys, Zappos, and Amazon.

Victory Leather Oak Bark Leather Belt Review – $93

I’ve mentioned before my affinity for products that have a great story behind them. It’s true – whether it’s a new product that arises out of something inspirational or it’s an heirloom piece full of great stories and a little bit of mystery, I seem to enjoy them the most. Such is the case with Victory Leather’s Oak Bark Leather Belt.

Victor-Leather-Belt-Review-8

About Victory Leather

Peter Sandford, a designer, maker, artist, and entrepreneur founded Victory Leather in Hampshire, UK, which is based on the south coast of England, within sight of Portsmouth’s historic dockyard, home of Nelson’s HMS Victory and the inspiration for his brand.

Peter’s no stranger to creating high quality leather goods – he’s been involved in leatherworking for quite some time, making bespoke watch straps, wallets, and briefcases. And, he also has a successful track record with a previous Kickstarter campaign for his Shuttl minimalist dockable wallet system.

Victor-Leather-Belt-Review-3

Construction

The leather. It’s one of those very exciting parts of why this belt really grabbed my attention. The leather from this belt comes from a tannery located in the southwestern part of England that has been there, on the river, since Roman legionnaires marched past it. Amazing. The same family has owned it for the past 150 years. Again, amazing.

Victor-Leather-Belt-Review-10

Here’s some more amazing information. This leather uses a natural tanning process that combines river water and the shredded bark of English Oak trees. It’s a slow, eco-friendly, process that yields simply beautiful leather. It’s strong, flexible, smells amazing, and extremely durable. It’s an 18-month process to utilize this tanning method.

My belt is 1.5 inches wide and is a gorgeous dark oak color with a brass buckle and solid brass Chicago screws. The thick leather edges are beveled, burnished, and dyed. The belt holes are oblong so that your buckle post rests in a flatter, more natural position when secured in the belt. Victory Leather’s logo is tastefully placed on the belt loop and looks great.

Take a few minutes and watch Peter make this stunning belt in his workshop:

Function

The Victory Leather Oak Bark Leather Belt performs its role perfectly. My pants stay up, my shorts stay up…it’s all good. I also appreciate the use of the solid brass Chicago screws versus stitching or rivets. It’s nice to have a belt that I can swap out the buckle easily should the occasion or need arise.

Victor-Leather-Belt-Review-9

Aesthetic

This belt generates attention. It started generating attention before I ever wore it. I had it on my desk for a couple of weeks and it was interesting to see how many people picked it up, commented on the way it felt…and then, they smelled it…and the comments continued. It feels great and has a unique, very pleasant smell to it.

Wearing it is a pleasure. It feels fantastic and has a rich look to it. It’s perfectly capable of complimenting your favorite jeans or will look excellent when used in semi-formal situations too.

Victor-Leather-Belt-Review-6

Conclusion

The Victory Leather Oak Bark Leather Belt is definitely what we’d consider a Buy It For Life item. “A belt built to outlast its owner” is how Peter refers to it. At $120 (its post-Kickstarter price) it’s a little more expensive than some of the belts we’ve featured in the past. But, it also has a pedigree that those other belts lack. In addition to the unique leather (and amazing history behind it), it also sports impeccable craftsmanship…something that we appreciate, respect, and highly endorse.

For a limited time (through June 30th) you can secure one of these amazing belts for about $93 USD during the Kickstarter campaign. Can’t decide on what color to purchase? Get two (there’s a package for that) or all 3 (save even more and really be set for life in the belt department).

Finally, we are also hoping to work with Peter to feature more information about the tannery mentioned in this article soon. Thanks!

Maxwell Scott Bags “The Pienza” Review – $59

Every person who has ever had a bag without a penholder knows the pains that come with its absence. I have gone through numerous penholders in my 20 years of life, and I don’t think I have ever been as excited about a penholder until I received the Maxwell Scott Pienza. The practicality, quality leather, and deep black color were enough to make me want to buy some pens and pencils worthy of occupying its sleeve.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

About

“Family owned and run, Maxwell Scott Bags is founded on a shared love of Italy, a passion for design, and a firm belief in the importance of excellent customer service.” Currently based out of North England, Maxwell Scott Bags was founded in 2002 with one goal: to become the most loved British bag company in the world. With a company revamp in 2013, the founders began a new vision. “The new brand identity comes from a blend of elements considered sacred to the company founders: craftsmanship, attention to detail, and a passion for creating individual style.” Be sure to read up about the company and its history, as well as keeping up with the Maxwell Scott Journal.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Construction

The Pienza is constructed using full-grain, black Italian leather. The inside is a durable, wipe-clean lining, which allows for smooth pen and pencil removal. The beautiful black leather is stitched with same color, heavy duty thread, giving the penholder a luxuriously sturdy feel. In the hand, the Pienza feels expertly constucted. It is sturdy, yet flexible. Durable, yet supple. The leather flap is easily opened and closed and provides adequate space for longer writing tools. At 2.1 inches wide, .7 inches deep, and 6 inches long, there is plenty of space for 3 to 4 pens and pencils. This penholder is gorgeously durable, which is important if you will be using it often like I have.

Maxwell-Scott-Bags-Pienza-4

Function and Aesthetic

Penholders have one function: to hold pens and pencils. Everyone who has asked and criticized me on why I have a luxury leather penholder to hold a few pens quickly changed their mind after touching, using, and admiring The Pienza. Because of its small size, the penholder is easily pocketed or thrown in to a messenger bag. I used my penholder to store a metal mechanical pencil, a pen/stylus hybrid, and a highlighter. I have used The Pienza for several weeks now and nothing has turned me off from this piece. The rich, elegant, black leather, sturdy construction, and supple touch seamlessly come together to form a perfect accessory to any leather connoisseur with other leather pieces.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Conclusion

I can honestly say I was hesitant at the idea of using such a nice penholder. Before I had Maxwell Scott Bags The Pienza, I would keep my pens and pencils thrown together in a random pocket or used a cheap nylon zipper bag penholder. Now, I’m unusually conscious and dismayed by those who throw their writing tools in a pocket as I once did. When I show them The Pienza penholder, they always appear confused, wondering how something so small and elegant could have such an impact on daily life. If you are tired of bag disorganization and inefficiency, I highly recommend buying a penholder. Maxwell Scott Bags has developed a splendidly ideal penholder standard. The $59 price tag is absolutely worth converting to this luxurious pen holding lifestyle.

US Wings Kangaroo Leather Bomber Jacket Modern A-2 Review – $889.00

In our last review from US Wings, we took a look at their iconic Indy Style Adventurer Jacket and were introduced to US Wings quality selection of leatherwear. We enjoyed that jacket so much and were delighted when asked to review the US Wings Kangaroo Leather Bomber Jacket Modern A-2. This is our first review of a product entirely composed of Kangaroo leather!

USWings (5)

CONSTRUCTION

The A2 Bomber jacket has quite a storied past and is almost instantly recognizable. Standardized by the US Army Air Corps in 1931, the A-2 saw most of it’s service in WW2 to provide protection from the elements for pilots in open cockpit planes. US Wings modern version retains the same classic styling elements but with a few slight modifications such as seal brown coloring and a slightly looser fit. The A-2 features 2 front cargo pockets with side entry handwarmers and an inside chest pocket for adequate storage options. The collar has snap downs that keep it in place and the brass YKK zipper is very solid and smooth. A windflap runs along zipper length and a hook and eye closure secures the collar at the top. Stitched down epaulets adorn the shoulders.

USWings (8)

The kangaroo leather used is actually regulated and certified by the Australian government. And if that doesn’t impress you, studies conducted by the Australian Commonwealth Scientific & Industrial Research Organization, state that Kangaroo Leather is lighter and stronger than cowhide or goatskin. It’s pretty much the titanium of leathers. The supplier of this particular leather is Packer Leather of Queensland Australia which has been around since 1881. The leather is incredibly lightweight. For reference the Indy Jacket weighs about 4.5 pounds and is cowhide, the A2 in Kangaroo weighs 3.3 pounds.

USWings (1)

FUNCTION

The A-2 is an excellent get up and go jacket. The super supple Kangaroo leather forms very well to my frame. The fit is true to size and my normal size large fit accurately. The ventilation grommets on the underarm are a very welcome feature and with the lighter leather, make this a great warm weather option. The ribbed cuffs and waist keep out air and offer a snug fit but sometimes the waist seems to ride up under the jacket when walking, a minor inconvenience if anything. My only real issue is the hook and eye closure. It’s a little difficult to get in place and I think a concealed button would work better.

USWings (3)

The A-2 was meant to shield pilots from the elements in planes, and this bomber excels at that. It was a blustery day in the mid 50s when I took these photos and the wind didn’t bother me at all. The versatility of the leather is quite impressive. I live in Marin County and the climate can change drastically just over a short distance. At the base of the Golden Gate it was cool and windy, but 15 minutes north on 101 and the temperature jumped to the low 70s. In any other leather jacket I’d be tempted to drop by a 7-Eleven, grab a pina colada Slurpee and pour it down my shirt, but the A-2 still felt alright. This is a great riding jacket and I appreciate how it handles weather changes.

USWings (2)

AESTHETIC

The bomber jacket in general is a quintessential piece of manliness. Take the US WIngs A-2 with one of the finest leathers available and you’re just not playing fair.  This jacket just exudes cool. It goes well with just about anything, you could probably wear jorts and still get away with it. You really can’t go wrong with classic looks, it’s timeless and never goes out of style.

USWings (4)

CONCLUSION

The US Wings Kangaroo Leather Bomber Jacket Modern A-2 is quite possibly one of the finest leather bombers available on the market. Made in the USA with premium Australian Kangaroo leather, this jacket will serve you, as well as your kids and perhaps their kids too. At $889 dollars it’s quite expensive (US Wings offers this model in many other affordable options) but will last a lifetime.

Blackthorn Leather Rover II Money Clip Wallet Review – $65

Cash is king. It’s a saying heard ‘round the world, all of the time. With that being said, it’s not surprising that there has recently been a rise in the popularity of money clips. With so many new styles out there, what’s the best choice for transporting your greenbacks? Andy Mock, of Blackthorn Leather has come up with a fabulous design called the Rover II Money Clip Wallet.

Blackthorn-Leather-Rover-II-Money-Clip-Wallet-9

About Blackthorn Leather

This is the second piece from Blackthorn Leather we’ve had the privilege to review. The first, Blackthorn Leather’s Classic Bifold Wallet, was published back in 2013. Staying true to form, Andy continues to produce high quality pieces made solely in the USA. Read more of how Andy started his business here.

Blackthorn-Leather-Rover-II-Money-Clip-Wallet-8

Construction

The leather on the Blackthorn Leather Rover II Money Clip Wallet is thick, stiff, full grain, 4-5 ounce vegetable tanned cowhide. It is dyed and antiqued beautifully and finished off with a light coat of neatsfoot oil and topped off with diluted Resolene. Stitching is symmetrical and done with Osborne waxed thread. The money clip is fashioned from stainless steel and holds a healthy stack of dead presidents.

Blackthorn-Leather-Rover-II-Money-Clip-Wallet-6

Function

Out of the box, the Rover II Money Clip Wallet is stiff. This is not a bad thing at all…in fact it bodes well for the longevity of this wallet. This is durable leather that will break in beautifully and age well. Initially, it will take some time to break it in and over time you’ll be able to fit more cards into the two slots provided. The size of this wallet allows you to choose where you want to carry. You like a front pocket wallet? The Rover II is a great choice for you. Oh…you prefer to carry in the back pocket? Again, the Rover II will serve you well. Either way, you’re in good shape.

Blackthorn-Leather-Rover-II-Money-Clip-Wallet-3

Initially I found that two cards per slot was ideal. It was tight, but workable. Again, with time and use you’ll be able to get a few more in each slot. But, if you’re a minimalist having the ability to carry four cards plus cash will be more than sufficient for you.

Aesthetic

The fit and finish of the Blackthorn Leather Rover II Money Clip Wallet is fantastic. My version came with white thread, which I think provides a nice contrast to the beautiful antique brown leather.

Andy’s dedication to quality leather crafting can be seen in the expert stitching and the polished, nicely skived edges. The Blackthorn Leather logo is tastefully placed and not overpowering. In fact, I think it’s a great looking logo and very apropos for leather goods of this quality. The Rover II Money Clip Wallet is also available in antique mahogany and black.

Blackthorn-Leather-Rover-II-Money-Clip-Wallet-5

Conclusion

At $65, the Blackthorn Leather Rover II Money Clip Wallet is an excellent buy (the original Rover can be had at $55 if you prefer a single pocket version). Given the high quality materials, the dedication to precision construction, the functionality, and the long wear-ability of the wallet, it’s really a bargain. Add to that free personalization (Andy will stamp three initials on the wallet for you) and free shipping. Be sure to visit Blackthorn Leather’s Etsy Shop and check out all of their other great items too.

Amos Brand Oscar Travel Bag Review – $495

I absolutely love traveling. There’s nothing better than packing up the car and getting out of town for a while. But traveling is even more fun when you have fancy accessories. Today we’ll be looking at my most recent fancy accessory – Amos Brand’s Oscar Travel Bag.

Amos Oscar Travel Bag 3

ABOUT AMOS BRAND

Amos is a new brand launched in March 2014 by Kyle Bardouche out of Colorado. Kyle’s goal was to make simple yet sophisticated items for men, and now has an extensive product line of bags, belts, wallets, and more. Amos (usually spelled Amōs if you want to get fancy with the Unicode) means “to carry” in ancient Hebrew. Their website boasts: “Amōs is for the modern nomad, adventurers, influencers, the style conscious, rookie travelers to seasoned travelers, and for those who appreciate a unique yet simple, clean design.”

Amos Oscar Travel Bag 4

CONSTRUCTION

Amos uses a beautiful combination of Merino wool felt and veg-tanned leather to construct the Oscar Travel Bag. The majority of the bag is made of soft wool, but the pieces that receive a lot of stress are constructed of leather. The zipper is edged with leather, and the corners are reinforced with leather as well. Inside, the bag is lined with wool and has a small zippered pouch as well as two elastic and leather slip pockets for small items. The rest of the bag is open to pack with whatever you’d like.

Amos Oscar Travel Bag 9

The removable strap is double-sided and comes with a shoulder pad for comfort. The strap is anchored into the wool with D-rings and leather loops. There’s an external zippered pouch for quick access.

Amos Oscar Travel Bag 6

A unique feature of this bag are the buckles on either end of the zipper. These can be unbuckled to make the bag larger if you need more packing space. Then you can buckle it right back up to keep the stylish shape of the bag.

FUNCTION

At first, I was worried that this bag was going to fall apart or that the straps were going to pop right out of the felt. However, I think I underestimated the strength of merino wool felt, because I use this bag all the time and have never felt like I have to treat it any more delicately than a normal duffel bag. The corners are reinforced with leather. The wool is waterproof and surprisingly strong.

Amos Oscar Travel Bag 7

At 20″ x 10″ x 10″, this bag is plenty large for a long weekend trip. It has no trouble fitting in the overhead compartment on an airplane, and isn’t too awkward or bulky to carry around. The shoulder strap isn’t extraordinarily comfortable, but the two handles are large enough to hold on your forearm to relieve some of the weight.

Amos Oscar Travel Bag 1

CONCLUSION

The Oscar Travel Bag is absolutely beautiful. I can’t take it anywhere without people stopping me and asking about it. The merino wool felt is a very unique look for a weekender bag, and is surprisingly durable. I look forward to taking this bag on many, many more trips. At $495, this bag is worth it for the simple and sophisticated look. However, it’s on sale on their website for only $295, which is an amazing deal for such a high quality bag with unique design. Go check it out! They also have a matching backpack and dopp kit made of the same materials.

Artumie Orange Spice Leather Candle Review – $22

Artumie is a small-batch candle company based in Chicago, IL and run by Lauren Hernandez. Like her father, who opened up his own small-batch distillery, Lauren grew her business from her favorite hobby – making her own scented candles. Named after the Etruscan goddess of night, moon, and nature, Artumie strives to produce candles with earthy and natural scents. Today we are reviewing the Orange Spice Leather Candle.

ArtumieOrangeSpiceLeatherCandle4

How it’s made

The Artumie candle is all about simplicity and environmental consciousness. First, the candle is hand mixed with phthalate-free, environmentally friendly oils and scents prior to being hand poured into small 6-8 jar batches at a time. Because every candle is made using 100% soy wax, they burn twice as long as paraffin wax candles and can push out approximately 50 hours of burn time. The design is reminiscent of an apothecary’s jar and was chosen for its multipurpose re-usability (I hope that’s a real word). This particular 11.5 oz candle has a clear wide mouthed jar and fits my Yankee Candle Illuma-Lid perfectly. For those searching for a darker look, the same candle can be found in a 9 oz amber jar with a brass twist lid. The label is equally environmentally friendly and made from 100% recycled paper. When you’re done with the jar, a quick wash with warm soapy water will quickly remove the label if desired.

ArtumieOrangeSpiceLeatherCandle1 ArtumieOrangeSpiceLeatherCandle5 ArtumieOrangeSpiceLeatherCandle7

Scent

The Orange Spice Leather candle was designed to be attractive to both men and women with a gender-neutral smell. The base smell is a rough classic leather with earthy tones. This is balanced with a sweet hint of citrus to give the candle throw an added dimension. What I particularly like in this candle is the consistency of the smell when lit or unlit. The throw is quite strong, possibly due to the wide mouth of the jar but that is something I look for in a candle. No one likes forking over their money to buy a candle that smells good in the store, only to realize that you can’t smell anything when it’s burning! On top of that, it’s one of those background smells that you never get tired of and won’t give you a headache.

ArtumieOrangeSpiceLeatherCandle6

Bestleather Conclusion

The Artumie Orange Spice Leather Candle is an attractive blend of styling and smell all in one small jar but don’t judge it based on its size. At $22, this hardworking candle will produce over 50 hours of burn time and a superior throw that will fill any room with a well-balanced soothing scent that will please any true leather lover.

The Goods LA – The Hit & The Clique Review – $80 & $25

We always mention that we see a lot of wallets here at BestLeather.org, but it’s true. We see A LOT of wallets. So it’s always fun to see one that stands out a little bit or has a slightly different look. The Goods, based in LA, definitely has a unique offering with The Hit. Let’s take a look at it.

The Goods The Hit The Clique 8
Top notch packaging

ABOUT THE GOODS

The Goods is a Los Angeles-based lifestyle brand that creates essentials for the modern man. Their product line is full of simple, sophisticated products for stylish people on the go. Founded in 2013, The Goods keeps things minimalist, selling only a few products on their website, all of which will be reviewed here on Best Leather. I recently reviewed The Loop, an awesome Macbook cord keeper that I adore, and The Crew, an earbud holder. Today I’ll be reviewing The Hit, their wallet, and The Clique, a key ring.

The Goods The Hit The Clique 1

CONSTRUCTION & FUNCTION

The wallet, known as The Hit, is made in the USA, of 5 oz. black veg-tanned leather. The dimensions of the wallet are 4″ x 2.75″ x 0.375″.  This is a very very thin wallet, less than half an inch thick, holding up to four credit cards/IDs and a few bills.

The Goods The Hit The Clique 4

There are three distinct pouches, one of which is divided all the way across the top and the other with a little tab for quick access to your cards without looking. Each divider is a piece of cowhide leather lined on one side with black dyed snakeskin. This gives a very cool offset texture, but the snakeskin has started to peel off a little bit at the top. The rest of the wallet has held up quite well, but you have to be pretty careful with your cards so as not to peel off the snakeskin.

The Goods The Hit The Clique 3

The Goods The Hit The Clique 2

The keyring, the Clique, is also constructed in the USA, of 6 oz black veg-tanned leather. It’s a small stainless steel jailer-style keyring attached to a leather case with an elastic loop. You attach your keys to the ring and The Clique holds your keys straight so they don’t create a bulge in your pocket.

The Goods The Hit The Clique 5

I liked The Clique at first because of the way it held my keys snug, but I ended up taking it off after a while. I found that the jailer-style ring kept coming undone with pressure from my heavy front door and all my keys would fall off. If it had a split ring or some kind of locking mechanism, I think it would stay much more secure. If you have fairly lightweight doors or use a remote control, I think this particular keyring would be a lot more functional. Just keep in mind that the weight of a heavy door might pop open the ring if you’re not careful. I noticed that The Goods recently added a new product, The Clip, which features a 1-inch CLASH hook and looks quite a bit sturdier than The Clique.

The Goods The Hit The Clique 6

CONCLUSION

The Hit is a really sleek wallet. The snakeskin lining makes for a unique texture that I haven’t seen on any other wallet. If you rarely use cash and only carry around a few cards, this wallet is the perfect size because it keeps a low profile in your pocket and holds everything snug. The front pouch holds a few folded bills easily. The Clique definitely looks cool on your keys with the matte black leather, and when you pair it with the wallet and headphone wrap, you feel pretty fancy. These two products, though, The Hit & The Clique, are a bit more style than substance, especially compared to the other products, The Loop and The Crew. They look fantastic, but I think a bit of refining is in order. Looking forward to seeing what The Goods do next, because they have a great aesthetic.

Shinola Journal Cover for iPad Mini Review – $150

Should I write that down or try to type it in on my iPad Mini? Do you ever have those thoughts run through your head in the midst of a meeting or class? I do. It’s a first world quandary. Fortunately, there’s a stylish chunk of leather that will house both paper and electronic tablet for you. Enter the Shinola Journal Cover for iPad Mini.

Shinola-Journal-iPad-Mini-8

About Shinola

This is the second piece we’ve reviewed for Shinola. The first being their beautiful Envelope for iPad Mini.  Shinola is becoming a powerhouse brand, gaining momentum all of the time as a top notch, high-end design and crafting firm based in the USA. Everything they make is proudly made here.

Shinola-Journal-iPad-Mini-6

Construction

As with Shinola’s other fine leather goods, the Journal Cover for iPad Mini is crafted in St. Genevieve, Missouri. The premium leather is sourced from Horween of Chicago, IL. My Journal Cover is black with black thread. It’s expertly cut and stitched together. In fact, Eric Scott built it. I know this because of the impressive metal card included with my Journal that has his name stamped in the “Built By” section.

Shinola-Journal-iPad-Mini-11

Function

The Journal Cover for iPad Mini exudes luxury. The leather is soft and supple to the touch. It’s thick and protective of my iPad Mini, but it’s not bulky in the least. When I first received the Journal Cover, I only used it to contain my iPad Mini and some business cards. Without a paper journal in it I found the cover to be too floppy and kind of a nuisance to handle. So, I ordered a set of Shinola’s Medium Paper Journals. Once I had one of their 72 page premium journals in there, the Journal Cover suddenly became the perfect meeting companion. I now carry it all of the time. If you want, you can probably insert your favorite type of journal in there without issue (i.e. Rhodia, Moleskine, or others of similar size). The only thing that’s glaringly absent is a pen or pencil slot. I wish this was integrated into the design, but at least there is space to secure a writing utensil within the cover.

Shinola-Journal-iPad-Mini-7

Aesthetic

The Shinola Journal for iPad Mini is available in 14 different leather colors. And, you can order their very useful journals in 8 colors. The black leather of my Journal Cover, combined with the grey journal and my Space Gray iPad Mini combine for a trifecta of visual awesomeness. It looks good…really good. And, it generates comments. Also, people want to touch it and hold it. I don’t mind.

Shinola-Journal-iPad-Mini-9

Shinola-Journal-iPad-Mini-10

Conclusion

If you are like me and need/desire/want to have the ability to jump on the Internet, check your email, or perform other functions in our technology laden world, but still yearn for the ability to write things down, and you want to keep it all organized and looking good, consider getting yourself a Shinola Journal Cover. At $150, it’s a great way to protect your technology, keep your business cards at hand, and still have a spot to keep good old fashioned notes written down.

Leather Built’s The Franklin Kit Review – $99

**Update June 17, 2015 – So, I’m appreciating this kit more and more as time goes on. Recently my daughter and son-in-law had college graduations that occurred on the same day, just at different times. Both of these events were held outside in a large stadium. Needless to say, it was a bright sunny day…perfect weather for graduations. But, that sunshine started baking my ginger haired crew’s fair skin. Did anyone have sunscreen? Nope. Oh wait…I DID because it’s in my Franklin Kit!! Since the graduations were a few hours a part, we decided to have a picnic lunch on the university’s campus too. Did anyone bring sanitary wipes? Nope. Oh wait…there are Wet Ones packets in my Franklin Kit! So, the Franklin Kit came through twice big time for us in the same day. I’m now sold on this thing never leaving my backpack when I’m out and about!

Benjamin Franklin, a hallmark of American history was a very interesting guy. In addition to being one of the founding fathers of our great United States of America, he was also a leading author, printer, political theorist, politician, postmaster, scientist, inventor, civic activist, statesman, and diplomat. And, I’m sure I may have missed one or two things in there. One of my favorite things about him was his list of 13 Virtues: Temperance, Silence, Order, Resolution, Frugality, Industry, Sincerity, Justice, Moderation, Cleanliness, Tranquility, Chastity, and Humility. Oh that those were exercised in full force daily among the masses… Anyhow, in keeping with Ben’s 13 Virtues, we present you with the Franklin Kit – full of 13 very useful items when you’re in a “tight spot” (yes, that was a no-so-subtle reference to the movie O Brother, Where Art Thou?).

Leather-Built-Franklin-Kit-3

About Leather Built

The Franklin Kit has been graciously supplied to us for review from Leather Built. “Leather Built was founded upon the principle of showcasing the highest quality leather goods built in the U.S.A. From our location in Meridian, Idaho, we have scoured America in search of only the best leather goods and have found some amazing companies and products that are sure to surprise and delight. Everything is backed with our Made for Life Guarantee so you can be completely confident in your purchase.”

Leather-Built-Franklin-Kit-5

Construction

The Franklin Kit is housed in fine leathery goodness courtesy of Gfeller Casemakers of Meridian, Idaho. We have featured Gfeller on a couple of occasions in the past – feel free to check out those reviews. The case itself is crafted 8-9 ounce vegetable tanned leather from Hermann Oak Leather. It’s super durable and will age well, developing a patina over time that will darken the case.

Leather-Built-Franklin-Kit-4

Function

The folks at Leather Built have this to say about The Franklin Kit: “The idea of the Franklin Kit came from a small pouch that my wife put together with a few things that would come in handy for her on the go. A mother of small children, she wanted items that could handle small medical incidences (think bandages and aquaphor), as well as everyday needs (think tweezers and anti-septic wipes). Not a first aid kit, the pouch was really an all purpose kit. This is the aim of the Franklin Kit, to provide some essential, everyday items while on the go. To boot, every one of the thirteen items are all made in the U.S.A.”

This little case, chock full of amazingness that you’ll definitely find useful in day to day travels and activities:

  • (7) NexCare Soft n’ Flex Bandages
  • (1) Uncle Bill’s Tweezers – Made in West Hartford, Connecticut
  • (6) Pac-Kit Triple Antibiotic Ointment Sachets – Made in Norwalk, Connecticut
  • (3) Sunx30 Sunscreen Packets – Made in Bakersfield, California
  • (6) WetOnes Antibacterial Wipes
  • (1) 12 pack of Diamond matches – Made in Cloquet, Minnesota
  • (1) Photon LED Unbreakable Microlight II – nearly unbreakable and Made in Eugene, Oregon
  • (1) Leatherman Brewzer Multi-tool – Made in Portland, Oregon
  • (2) 2 Packet of Tylenol Extra Strength
  • (2) Tender Ben’s Insect Wipes – Made in Littleton, New Hampshire
  • (1) American Unbreakable 5” Pocket Comb – Made in Paterson, New Jersey
  • (7) Sachets of Floss from POH – Made in Tulsa, Oklahoma
  • (1) Aquaphor 1.35 oz – Made in Mainland, Pennsylvania

Its compact size (5 ¾” x 4 ½” x 2”) allows you to easily toss it into your messenger bag, backpack, or tote bag and know that you’re in pretty good shape. There is a little room left in the kit…so feel free to add a lighter or firestarter and a small knife. It’s a great kit for those of you interested in EDC (Every Day Carry) items.

Leather-Built-Franklin-Kit-7

Aesthetic

The Gfeller case is awesome. Thick, natural vegetable tanned leather is hard to beat. The heavy-duty snap is easy to close and open with one hand. And again, due to its size, you can easily add a few things into the case and then toss the case into a larger bag.

Conclusion

If Ben Franklin were around these days, I think he’d be a bit like MacGyver…able to come up with a clever problem solving solution to just about any situation. And, my guess is that he’d be sporting an awesome leather bag, backpack, or satchel of some type. And yes, within that bag, he’d have a kit chock full of items very similar to The Franklin Kit. At $99 from Leather Built, it’s a great purchase and you’ll be able to utilize the kit and easily refill its contents for many years for the many adventures ahead of you.

Spencer Collection by Design Unsanctioned $25-$40

Style comes and goes, but class is timeless. That’s how I feel when it comes to brass, and even more so when combined with timeless materials like wood and leather. In a high tech world of poly plastics, carbon fiber, and titanium trinkets, there is something sacred in hearkening back to the materials our great grandfathers knew and used in their everyday carry. Just as well worn leather is a beauty to behold, brass achieving it’s own patina over time makes it a favorite for anyone who appreciates a good vintage vibe with their EDC.

Design Unsanctioned is a Brooklyn based design studio that jump started their brand with a successful Kickstarter campaign introducing their Spencer Collection. This small collection is a blend of classic materials with a modern design. Precision milled solid brass bottle openers and key hooks, with beautiful walnut inlays and top-grain leather straps.

Solid and beautifully simple were my first impressions when holding a piece of the collection. At first I considered this a fairly modern design, but I’ve found myself thinking this has a early 60’s feel and I can imagine Don Draper from the show Mad Men using one of these brass bottle openers. Brass, wood and leather truly are timeless and these pieces echo that in their form.

When it comes to function, these pieces perform exactly as you’d expect them to. I find the mini bottle opener to be much more direct in function as compared to the larger model. With the larger bottle opener you may find yourself having to find the correct side to apply to the bottle cap. And that may become more difficult depending on how many bottle tops were popped previously, if you take my meaning. They’re both enjoyable bottle openers, and I love handing them to people and seeing their amazed expressions while they closely examine the piece and inquire where to get one.

The keyhook looks great on raw denim, and does great at holding your keys in a classy manner. I’ve found that it’s better to wear it without a belt, or you may find that the sharper edges of the key hook maybe possibly mar the outer finish of your belt. If you put the kind of money into a leather belt that I do, then that’s not something you’ll want to find out the hard way so be wary of how you carry with it. What I really like the idea of quickly hooking up your keys to your satchel.

The leather is full grain with a quality finish. The pieces are perfectly cut with laser precision, so you’ll never find a flaw in the shape. Some folks will prefer their leather goods to be die cut, but these leather pieces are small and it produces a fine end result in my opinion. The sturdy key fob makes for a great accent on most belts, and a comfortable way to carry your keys about. Unfortunately for me the key fob won’t quite fit on my 1.75″ wide Mountain Belt from Craft and Lore. But I’m in a very small minority of folks who wear such a wide belt, and just about any belt would fit this piece of the collection.

All in all this is a great collection from Design Unsanctioned, and I look forward to their future collections. Be sure to check out their Look Book and if you own any pieces from their collection be sure to let us know what you think.
