White’s Boots MP Service Boot Review – $579.95

Up until recently, I wasn’t aware of White’s Boots. As someone who handles and reviews leather products on a regular basis, I was frankly embarrassed I somehow glossed over them. It wasn’t until a collaboration project between White’s and Triple Aught Design that I discovered a boot company that quite possibly makes the finest boots available. After some heavy research, I needed to see what the company was made of. Enter White’s Boots MP Service Boot.

About

White’s Boots has been around a long time, they actually predate the Civil War. Originally started by a father son team, White’s specialized in logging boots. Originating in West Virginia and finally settling in Spokane Washington, the company has been constantly producing high quality boots since 1853.

Construction 

This boot is made almost entirely by hand. From the sewing to the welt, a skilled craftsman built these piece by piece. The leather is sourced from the famous Horween leather tannery. The Chromexcel is a you guessed it, chrome tanned leather. I definitely prefer chrome tanning as I feel it handles the elements a little better than vegetable tanning. This is a 6” boot, and while the model reviewed is the brown version, White’s produces this in a handful of other finishes and colors. The soles are Dainite lugged and the boot features a toe cap. 

 Function 

For me, the largest roadblock with new boots is the break in process. Chances are if it’s a high quality boot (i.e Red Wing, Wolverine 1,000 Mile, etc) you’re going to have some discomfort initially. Yes, the MP Service Boots are no exception. Thankfully the leather is very supple and forgiving, so they mold to your feet a little quicker.

If you’re having trouble deciding what size you are, White’s has a brilliant foot sizing system in place. They will mail you a template, simply trace your foot wearing your boot socks and take a few quick measurements with the provided tape and mail it back. White’s will then recommend you a size, or if you’re a mutant – they can make a boot to fit you!

The Dainite Sole was new to me, usually I have Vibram soles. The Dainite is a softer sole with a large lug pattern. I definitely think they’re more comfortable and offer a sleeker profile than the half lug Vibrams, however if you’re the type who is off the trail, you’d probably want to consider these soles a little more closely.  Paired with a thick wool sock, these boots work nicely in moderately colder climates, the gusseted tongue keeps out excess moisture and debris.

The fact that I can resole these later on is an added bonus. Arch support is great, and I found prolonged periods of standing to be unexpectedly tolerable. Think of these boots as an around town footwear option that can handle the occasional contingency.  

Aesthetic 

I would argue that you’d be hard pressed to find a better looking boot that can handle a multitude of scenarios with as much adaptability that the MP Service Boots offer. Jeans, Chinos, etc – You’ll be solid. Horween leather is superb and I suspect these boots will take on a brilliant patina with time.

  The waxed laces mesh well with the boot and definitely hold a knot better than traditional leather laces, although I would have liked to have seen metal aglets on the end that matched the lace keepers. The problem with White’s Boots – they make practically every other boot look flimsy and cheap. Now that I’ve experienced true American craftsmanship, I can’t simply pick up a pair of boots at DSW. 

Conclusion 

There is no question these are one of, if not the finest boots you can buy. The only real question remaining is if you can justify the cost. For the work boots made by Whites, I’d say it’s  no brainer. For a casual/lifestyle boot, it begs serious consideration. Just be careful, because once you try a pair on and handle them, almost everything else will feel subpar. White’s Boots MP Service Boot looks just about perfect, and once you get past the first few painful of weeks of breaking them in, you’ll have companions for life.

Forbes & Lewis Somerset Holdall – $426

I’ve always called these sorts of bags “duffle” bags, but holdall is more accurate, isn’t it? It truly “holds all” you need. Forbes & Lewis’ Somerset Holdall is an excellent entry in this category for a wide variety of purposes. The Somerset looks great and will fit in just about anywhere from business travel to an outdoor get together.

Leather & Construction

The Somerset Holdall is stitched together with a waxy buffalo leather on the outside and a silky polyester on the inside. The buffalo leather is medium thickness, making it strong but not too heavy. The wax gives the leather some pull-up, meaning the color will lighten and have variation as the leather moves during use. Construction is very clean with no noticeable flaws. 

A lack of reinforcement rivets and use of a fabric lining make me think the Somerset isn’t built to endure a bomb strike as much as some bags we see, but construction is very clean and materials are quality. Forbes & Lewis offers a two year warranty on all their products, but I would expect this bag to last for several years beyond that with regular use.

Function

When my girlfriend saw me writing this review she asked, “Oh, is that the fun bag you use all the time?” She’s right…this is a fun bag, and I use it all the time. Interestingly, I believe I’ve only used it once for travel. It certainly stands up to the name “holdall.” I’ve probably been heading to about 10 events this summer, realized I needed to hold a bit more than a backpack can handle, and happily thrown it all in my Somerset. The large size and wide zippered opening make it easy to get everything in and out. I would estimate the internal capacity to be in the 40 liter range, enough for several days on a trip or a blanket, football, water, and some snacks when going to watch the fireworks. 

 

The fabric internal lining offers a nice array of organization options. On one side is a padded laptop compartment and some small pockets, on the other a single larger zippered pocket. Perfect for your laptop or tablet, keys, wallet, etc. These items are fairly easy to get to even with the bag mostly full. Pockets are located relatively high up on the sides of the bag. 

Note that here I’m reviewing the large version of the Somerset. 

Aesthetic

At the majority of aforementioned outings, at least one person has been kind enough to compliment the Somerset. It’s sort of interesting that a bag that is virtually just “brown” is as beautiful as this one is. Maybe that’s exactly the beauty of it. In one of my favorite movies, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, a character wisely points out: “Beautiful things don’t ask for attention.” I think that’s where the Somerset shines. It’s not loud or flashy, but strong. Leather is a beautiful material, and the waxy buffalo leather on the Somerset has texture, character, and is great to look at. 

Conclusion

The Forbes & Lewis Somerset Holdall is lovely, highly functional, versatile, and well-built. This bag is easy to use…it’s easy to fill up, it’s easy to grab and throw in the car, it’s easy to fit in wherever it goes. It’s the “fun bag you use all the time.” The price is about what you’d expect for a product of this caliber. I’m happy to recommend the Somerset as a great option for anyone in need of a quality holdall.

Buffalo Jackson Jefferson Leather Duffle Review – $549.95

I’ve never really been a luggage guy. A stiff nylon box with wheels attached to it, no thanks. You obviously can’t deny the convenience of a roller, but sometimes you just have to do things differently. When it comes to a weekend jaunt or an overnight business trip, duffles reign supreme. Finding that precarious balance of style, function and build can be tricky. I think I found a solid candidate however, Buffalo Jackson’s Jefferson Leather Duffle. 

Construction 

The Jefferson Duffle is made up of full grain leather, the wax finish and vegetable tanning process provide for a “pull up” effect which is the way the leather seems to darken or lighten when handled. The interior features a largely cotton lined interior in a herringbone pattern. We see YKK solid brass zippers as hardware. Along with the double grab handles, the Jefferson also has D rings which you can attach the included shoulder strap for handling heavier loads hands free.

 Function 

There’s a scene in the classic romcom,  Joe vs. The Volcano where Joe visits a high end luggage boutique and a very passionate, somewhat eccentric salesman excitedly expounds on the features of a certain steamer trunk. I could totally see this duffle in that shop. The Jefferson has just about everything you need, and not much else you don’t. My favorite feature is hands down the shoe compartment. Segregating shoes or dirty laundry is crucial for me and not having to carry a plastic bag is nice. There’s plenty of space, bordering on too much – if you were to pack this bag it would not only be heavy (The bag weighs a few pounds empty) but somewhat cumbersome. I would really have liked a small slotted pocket on the exterior for quick stashing of small essentials like phones, wallets or keys. This bag shines as a weekend get away bag or as a classy gym bag.

Aesthetic 

The classic design of the Jefferson seems to handle any scenario with finesse. I could totally see a hot shot business exec toting one into the country club locker room, yet could also see a blue collar guy throwing it in the pickup for a weekend camping trip. One of the absolute best things about leather is the fact it will look better with use, it will develop character and you’ll come to treasure it. So don’t be careful, throw it around and use it! The thick full grain offers a very appealing presence, this bag is like a puppy..people will comment on it..to a fault. 

Conclusion 

Buffalo Jackson’s Jefferson Leather Duffle does a great job of blending modern features with old world craftsmanship. The hefty price tag is definitely a hold up. You can get something just as durable in a non leather material for a fifth of the price, but you’d be hard pressed getting this aesthetic. The shoe compartment is a major selling point but the heavy weight of the bag is something to consider. All things considered, it’s a high quality bag that will not only perform, it will do it looking stylishly. As the great Deion Sanders put it, “If you look good, you feel good. If you feel good, you play good. If you play good, they pay good.”

Loctote Flak Sack II Anti Theft Backpack Review – $129.00

It all started last week. My wife and daughter were at the community pool, it was a blistering 90 plus outside and the place was packed. We grabbed a patch of grass by the fences, about 30 feet from the water. We had brought our phones and wallets with us and obviously couldn’t take them in the water, so we took turns swimming with our daughter. It was ridiculous. It was after that ordeal that I started looking for a secure option to store our personal belongings when out and about. That’s how I found out about the Loctote Flak Sack II Anti Theft Backpack.

Construction

The Flak Sack is built like a traditional drawstring pack with some very interesting features. The fabric is made from Loctote’s proprietary Flaknit, a highly slash and abrasion resistant material. Loctote states this bag scored an impressive A9 cut level. I believe this is an actual ANSI based guideline, so this rates up there for safety equipment used in industrial applications where contact with dangerously sharp materials is performed frequently. The drawstrings are also made of slash resistant textiles. The bag has a large open compartment with a smaller RFID blocking fleece lined interior. We also see a steel reinforced locking strap to keep prying hands out.

The bag weighs about 2lbs empty (including lock) and measures in at 18”x14”

Function 

The Flak Sack II functions much like your standard drawstring bag. The material is a little rigid and less pliable than nylon, which is kind of expected given the security features. The main compartment makes stowing gear pretty easy, but this bag will fill up quick, and you can’t stuff it to the brim. I found out the hard way because you can’t cinch it completely shut and get the lock on if it’s packed. So definitely try to keep the bag about 75% loaded at most. 

The drawstrings are also slash resistant. I think it would have been great if they had steel cable running through them to add even more reinforcement. There’s video of guys making multiple attempts at slashing them though with little success though, but you’d have to be at it awhile and cause a scene to get this bag open. The locking function is pretty easy once you see it done on video. Once secured the bag is cinched so tight you can’t even get a finger inside the bag.

The major selling point for me is the ability to lock it to stationary objects like posts or fences. I wish I had this bag in college. You could leave your expensive electronics locked to your bedpost! The RFID blocking feature is a nice bonus, although I pity whomever wasted their time trying to get into my laughable finances in the first place.

Aesthetic

Drawstring bags aren’t typically great looking, usually towing the line between teenager at soccer practice and gym bro man bag. However Loctote did a nice job “adulting” it up a bit. The material is inherently thicker, so the bag has a more quality look and feel to it. The leather accents really do a great job at adding a subtle flair to the bag. It comes in a few other colorways like heather and digital camo if you want something a little more conspicuous. 

Conclusion

I want to point out that no anti theft device is fail proof. However, Loctote’s Flak Sack II definitely adds peace of mind when storing your goods. The fact that the Flak Knit material is so resistant to cuts and punctures just adds to the “It” factor. I like the fact that I’m wearing a bag that could quite literally double as a shield against edged weapons. I wish it was a little bigger and cost a little less, but that’s the price of innovation. All in all, it’s definitely worth a look if you travel with a lot of expensive goodies and find yourself away from your pack at times.

Mr. Lentz Medium Duffel Bag Review – $440

I’ve been impressed by a leather wallet assembled with rivets, but how about a whole duffel bag? The Mr. Lentz Medium Duffel Bag is a beautiful, sturdy, threadless overnighter that I’m happy to recommend for a variety of uses.

Leather & Construction

Let’s talk about the two things in Mr. Lentz’ favorite mixture: leather and metal.

First, leather. Premium, full-grain, USA sourced leather makes up this duffel. It is as strong as it is pretty. It smells amazing. This is just plain, simple, quality leather. My favorite kind. Thickness is good for plenty of durability without overly weighing you down, based on the size of the bag. Edges are cut cleanly and smooth.

Next, metal. There’s a lot of durable thread out there, but none has the longevity of metal. If a well made leather item does need repair, it’s usually because the thread has worn out. Mr. Lentz avoids it entirely here. It only takes a few rivets to replace an entire row of thread. It would be challenging to make a direct comparison between the two options as to which has more pull strength, but in my experience the rivets hold up very well. It’s a unique concept and I’m a fan.

Function

This is the first bag that I’ve used around this size. It’s not as large as what I’d usually think of when I think of a “duffel.” This is a true overnighter; there’s just enough room for a change of clothes and a few other small items. I’ve also tried it as a basic computer or camera bag. My 13″ MacBook Pro fits, but only at an angle. A tablet computer would be a better choice for this bag. My small mirrorless camera fit with plenty of room–this would be an awesome camera bag with the help of a camera packing cube. I haven’t tested this myself, but I also suspect it could work well as a tool bag. It’s a really good size for a variety of day-outing or overnight applications.

A carry sample: small dopp, jeans, belt, paperback, socks, two t-shirts, wallet, charger, earbuds.

One of my first thoughts when I realized this bag was assembled solely with rivets was, what about small items? Couldn’t something like a pen slip through the gaps between rivets? So I tested this out. I was able to force a pen through the spaces between rivets, but it took a reasonable amount of effort. Only items much smaller than a pen would face any risk of falling out on their own. Everything larger will be well secured under the side panels, which can be secured with snaps, and the cover flap, held down with two buckles. The duffel isn’t waterproofed, though good conditioner can help prevent water damage.

Nothing bigger than a button will make it through gaps between rivets.

Aesthetic

The Mr. Lentz duffel uses strong, simple design to stand out. The appearance is clean and sophisticated, but simultaneously very rugged. The brass buckles and rivets are polished and lend themselves well to exhibiting sturdiness.

This duffel is a beautiful palette of natural tan colored leather. I personally think most leather products are at their best without dye, and I love the appearance of this bag. I’ve heard criticism of natural colored leather about it being too plain or lacking character, but that’s just nonsense. The individual markings and grain patterns from the cow are highly visible, ensuring you’re buying a one-of-a-kind product. Over time as this bag is used, treated with conditioner, and exposed to the sun it will continue to develop a beautiful patina. This patina will make it even more uniquely your own. This bag is beautiful now and will be more beautiful in the future.

Conclusion

I just love using products that focus on everything important and nothing that isn’t. The Mr. Lentz Medium Duffel Bag is a great example of this philosophy. Strong, beautiful leather skillfully (and cleverly) assembled into a highly functional design. This multi-purpose bag is going to treat you well for a lifetime–Mr. Lentz guarantees it with his 100 Year Guarantee. The price isn’t low, but you’re getting what you pay for. I recommend this duffel as a Bestleather Buy It For Life item.

Kodiak Leather 30L Weekender Duffel Review – $340

As a baby we require a diaper bag. As a boy, we need a backpack. As a man, we need a quality leather duffel. A leather duffel for travel is a must have for someone who looks for quality and statement pieces. Although high quality handmade leather bags tend to be on the pricey side, their quality should last a lifetime and even be able to be passed down to the next generation.

Kodiak Leather 30L Weekender Duffel is an exceptionally gorgeous bag, with all the pockets and room one needs for a weekend+ trip. And, in my opinion, is very affordable given the style, leather, design and overall quality. I was very excited to add this piece to my leather collection as my first leather duffel bag. I am now a man.

After having 4 successful Kickstarter campaigns, the Buffalo Leather Satchel, The Classic Weekender Duffel, the Sitka Leather Messenger, and the most recent Kobuk Leather Backpack,  they have come full circle on offering a wide variety of travel bags , briefcases (similar to the satchel and the messenger), as well as some smaller, everyday carry items like journals and wallets.

Construction

The 30L Weekender duffel is made from a thick top grain buffalo leather and a high grade thread. Premium brass hardware and YKK zippers are used in the bag. The bag is available in 2 leather finishes: antique brown and dark walnut (pictured). The dimensions of the bag are 10″ deep x 20″ length x 11″ height. The bag has 2 zippered exterior pockets measuring 6″x7″. There is also interior side slots for cards, a device pocket and 2 pen holders The interior of the bag is lined with a dark brown fabric liner with an interior zippered pocket measuring 6″ x 9″ as well as side card, device and pen holders. The removable strap is a combined use of quality nylon and leather. In addition to the removable strap there are two regular top handles with a 2 snap closure.

Function

This is a great functioning bag for a weekend or even a longer pack. The zippers are  heavy duty and I can tell they will hold up over time and use. For me, it is just a perfect sized bag fitting plenty of clothes, books, travel gear and even a couple pairs of shoes if needed. I tend to pack minimally so this bag could suit a week’s travel trip for me. If you are one that needs more space, there is also a new kickstarter page for a 45L duffel  as well as a 60L duffel available with more pockets and features as well. The pockets are not that deep which for me is perfect as I won’t feel the need to stuff them and have a hard time finding a specific item. But if you are looking for a wider or deeper pocket, then you may consider the larger option. The side pockets to me are suitable for a wallet, regular sized smart phone, keys, passport and a small notebook or charger even. The inside pocket falls into the same category- not quite wide or deep enough for a toiletry bag or book but enough room for small accessories, change, keys, etc..

Aesthetic

As mentioned above, the color and look of this leather is just gorgeous with a more distressed look with plenty of cracks and contrast in the leather. I personally love this look as it looks already as if is an heirloom item and will continue to get that rugged look over time. I also like the fact that the bag is lined with a nice nylon fabric to protect any clothing. Lastly, although a small detail, I really like the fact that their are brass raisers on the bottom of the bag to somewhat keep the bag from resting or dragging on the ground. Most may not see the benefits of these, but I feel it’s a nice detail if not just a style touch.

Conclusion

There are so many options for leather weekender duffels on the market and they range in price based on the intricate work and, or course, high quality leather used. I feel this bag lays somewhere right above the middle ground with the top grain leather, lightweight yet very stylish and functional. And at a reasonable price. Watches and leather..two luxurious things many luster over. The two combined makes for quite the fashion statement. Although I own only 2 watches, I love to interchange the bands based on season, formal attire or just fun!

Olpr. Leather Goods Co. is a small family business, started in Ukraine. All of the items are made to order, but they also have a showroom in the workshop where the customers can come and choose something from stock.

Construction

All of the leathers used are the full-grain cowhides sourced from Horween tannery. High grade thread comes in several different colors ranging from the classic white, brown and black to more fun colors like orange, blue, green. The buckle is stainless steel. The bands are available in various widths and lengths. They also carry bands tailored to fit apple watches.

Aesthetic

I absolutely love the fact that not only are these watches made from high quality leather, but you can customize them to fit your skin, wardrobe, or just overall style. I personally wear a lot of blues and light colors so chose a sky blue thread color that compliments the natural Horween brown and has a gorgeous pull up effect. I can’t wait to see what this leather looks like through age. The buckle is very basic and lightweight which is one thing to keep in mind. I actually prefer this. I own some watch bands with a very clunky and heavy hardware and although that is a statement, it is nice to have a buckle with a low profile to put the attention on the leather band and, of course, the watch.

Conclusion

At $49 for a Horween leather customizable watch band like this, I truly believe it is a great value. Other customizable bands I have come across can easily go for $100 and over. The leather is gorgeous with some natural marks and scars from the hide and the thread colors are fun to mix and match. I am already contemplating another color combination! Check them out -Here-.

Redwing Heritage Beckman Round Boots Style No. 9016 Review – $349.99

Boots are definitely the quintessential footwear choice for men, in my opinion. Delving into the world of boots can be daunting though, especially for the first time shopper. Hiking, work, casual and the list goes on. I think I may have found the best option that can handle a little of all of it without necessitating several purchases. The Redwing Heritage Beckman Round 9016 seems to be at home on the job site as well as the office.

Construction

There doesn’t seem to be any vulnerable spots on this boot, everything is double or triple stitched.

The Beckman’s are available in several finishes, reviewed are the 9016 – in Redwing’s signature Cigar Featherstone Leather. This is a very smooth, somewhat glossy leather. The full grain hide is thick yet supple, much more so than the Iron Rangers I have. A Roccia styled sole is attached to the bottom and features a lugged design. As with most all Redwings, they feature a Goodyear Welt which of course means this boot can be resoled. The laces are waxed cotton and we see metal eyelets adding reinforcement along the gusseted tongue.  All of this goodness is made in the USA.

Function

Expect some stiffness at the outset. You can always throw in some foam insoles, but this will ultimately hinder the leather sole from molding to your fit.

You’ll hear this from Redwing owners time and time again. There boots need to be broken in, the case was almost painfully obvious for me out of the box. If this is your first pair, I strongly suggest you get a proper fitting at a Redwing store or take a measurement using a Brannock device. They should fit somewhat snug, so they can stretch with use. I will say that these were almost impossible to get on without a shoe horn, it was snug to a fault and I think the gusseted tongue should have had more play in it. These boots are like baseball gloves, the more you wear them in, the better they perform. The lugged outsoles perform well and offer a tactile connection with most surfaces. The gusseted tongue keeps out rain and debris as well.

Do yourself a favor and order a shoehorn when getting these boots. You’ll thank me later.

Aesthetic

The Beckman’s are a bit more on the dressy side mostly due to the polished finish. That being said, the simple yet classic look seems at ease anywhere. The honeyed brown hues seem to mesh with almost any pant without overpowering your outfit. The quality exhibited (3 different workers have to approve every shoe before it’s shipped) in these shoes just seem to make them pop.  Even my wife who seems to routinely walk up to the wrong car in the parking lot with her keys, noticed these boots. That speaks volumes.

Conclusion

The Redwing Heritage Beckman Round is a classic boot with top notch American made craftsmanship and pride. The 349.99 price definitely requires some consideration, although you can shop around and find them cheaper, plus the ability to resole will probably make them more cost effective over time than more disposable footwear. Leather & Construction

The Bullet Journal Cover is made with top notch materials.

Full grain bridle leather is both attractive and strong. This is a low maintenance leather that will last a lifetime. It strikes a nice balance in that it maintains some appearance of raw leather (read: visible grain) even though it’s actually a finished, protected leather. Leather is sourced from Wickett and Craig, a trusted American leather tannery.

The cover is hand stitched using waxed linen thread. Linen thread isn’t as common as polyester these days, but it has similar strength when properly waxed and has a great appearance. Needlework on the Bullet Journal Cover is precise and strong. Sturdy brass hardware is used for reinforcing rivets and closure snaps.

Rugged Minimalist offers a lifetime warranty on all of their products. I’ve had opportunity to discuss various build and design aspects with Rugged, and this is a company that takes pride in their work.

Function

There’s a few things to look for when seeking a notebook cover, and Rugged Minimalist has managed to check all the boxes.

First and foremost, is the  journal well protected? Yes, by sturdy leather, from nearly every side. The top and bottom are exposed to the elements, but the edges of the leather are thick enough to make sure no drops or bumps can damage your notebook. Closure snaps are secure and the cover won’t be accidentally opening. Since the journal itself is well secured in place inside the cover, it should have no problems remaining pristine.

Held snug and protected

There’s some extra features Rugged Minimalist has provided as well. One must-have feature for me is a place to park your pen, which is provided via some slits in the spine. There’s also a variety of slots that could be used for cards, other small notebooks, receipts or spare papers, extra pens, etc. Since this is probably going to be part of your every day carry, may as well store some other EDC items within.

Holding some extras

Oh, one last thing I really like. The layout and choice of leather is such that, when opened, the cover lies completely flat. It’s a pet peeve of mine when you have to work and wear in a cover to lie flat, so big thumbs up from me here!

Bullet Journal

While our main focus is to review the leather product itself, it seems appropriate to speak briefly about the bullet journaling system. Bullet journaling is a mix of your calendar, to-do list, and journal. I didn’t often use mine as a journal in the ‘diary’ sense, as I found it more useful as a planner. I think what gives bullet journal a unique edge is the fluidity of the organization. There’s an emphasis on “migrating” tasks. That is, when you didn’t complete a task, it encourages you to think about it: worth my time? Needs doing imminently? Can I put it off for a few weeks or months? It’s a highly customizable and unique way of looking at organization.

Aesthetic

I find myself annoyed when most protective cases tend to make an item uglier than without. You’re forced to choose between protecting the item or enjoying how it looks. Thank goodness leather doesn’t have this problem! Rugged Minimalist has made a cover that far exceeds the appearance of the journal itself. No extra frillies or designs…just beautifully finished leather, sewn with precision and edged to perfection. Rugged Minimalist is especially careful with attention to detail when it comes to edging. Sometimes an unfinished edge has a certain appeal too, but a smooth, polished edge matches this leather best. Just seeing this cover on my desk gives me a little spark of happiness.

A journal is a great companion. It can be for recording thoughts and experiences or for organization and scheduling. Triple Aught Design Axiom 24 Pack Review – $325.00

Growing up, all I needed was my leather bottom Jansport. It served me well on the playground and through middle school. As I made the rough, aberrant transition into adulting I found out my trusty pack wouldn’t cut it. Soon I found myself with a briefcase, an overnight duffle, a gym bag, etc. It was  a real nuisance swapping bags all the time, and it was then that I started my search for one bag to rule them all. In this review we’ll check out TAD’s Axiom 24 Pack and see if it can handle being a one bag…bag.

Construction

Probably the first thing you’ll notice when handling the Axiom is the textile material composing the shell. VX-21 Ripstop is comprised of 4 layers including a C6 DWR 210D Nylon face, Polyester X-PLY, 0.25 mil PET film and 50D Poly Taffeta backing for abrasion resistance. Most of us are likely used to rough, heavy 1000D cordura, so it might seem like a sensory shock at first. Opening the bag is a little reminiscent of a bag of Lays Sour Cream and Onion at times but not overly noisy. The water resistance of this material is far more impervious to water than traditional ripstop, and much lighter.

The pack has a mesh back made of closed cell, cross linked polyethylene foam. We see Hypalon Synthetic Rubber across the top, enhancing water resistance even more so. Capacity is rated at  24 liters (1465 cu in) and the pack measures 12” (30.48 cm) W x 19.75” (50.165 cm) H x 7” (17.78 cm) D – Weight is about 37 ounces comparable to a male adult Chinchilla (Short tailed)

 Function

The admin pocket is very adept at consolidating all your small essentials into one manageable space.

The team at Triple Aught Design created several Axiom’s, and they took in customer feedback off previous renditions to really fine tune this pack, and it shows. If you’re familiar with their signature Fast Pack bags, but were leery of the tactical vibe, then the Axiom would be better suited for you. This bag has a streamlined, clean and uncluttered design. I found the top shallow pocket perfect for sunglasses or keys, although I would have liked to have had it lined with microfiber for electronics. TAD also included an ingenious side water bottle pocket that is completely gusseted to the inside of the pack. I was able to fit in my 40 oz Kleen Kanteen inside the pocket, which was a first as no other bag’s pouches were large enough.

The bag features a smaller organizational pocket which has lots of slots and zippered pouches for small items you want contained. There’s also an inversed compartment on the bottom of the bag, this is probably best for storing a rank gym shirt, Ke$sha CD or anything else you want out of sight. The main compartment has attachment points for MOLLE type accessories as well. I really appreciate the generous padding on the shoulders and back, both of which are very breathable.  Just keep in mind, all those streamlined pockets come at a cost. Anything you stuff into the side compartments or the inverted pocket, will directly eat up space in your main compartment.

Did I say the side pockets were handy? Because they most certainly are.

Aesthetic

I had a hands on review with TAD’s Fastpack, and while it was a versatile bag, I often felt it was a little too  tactical at times. TAD has managed to successfully replicate a lot of the features we see in that pack, but in a much easier to swallow pill. The Axiom has a very sleek look. Whereas the Fastpack was engineered, the Axiom was orchestrated. It’s like an adult bag for the guy who has a lot of toys. The coyote brown is a neutral color that goes with almost anything, it will also show wear more too, so something to consider when purchasing.

Aside from the watch, everything in this picture was made in the USA. I definitely try to buy quality American made goods when I can, and they really hold their own.

Conclusion

Triple Aught Design’s Axiom 24 is a well thought out, superbly constructed bag. It exhibits top notch, highly technical materials in its DNA. The price is definitely in the upper echelons as far as quality bags go, so you’ll have to decide if the price warrants the use. The Axiom is a very solid everyday bag that has the capacity and organization to get you through your day, day in and day out.

Waterfield ZIP Laptop Briefcase Review — $219

UX (user experience) is a big topic in the Bay Area. And it’s not only important with software, but also with the briefcase that carries your hardware. It’s real meta. I like that.

This briefcase I’m about to tell you about has the perfect UX.

It’s the second iteration of Waterfield’s ZIP Laptop Brief, and it’s clear they paid close attention to the smallest details. In fact, my first draft of this review began with, “Wow, wow, wow. This bag is amazing!”

I still feel that way.

 

Deciding to Buy

The positive user experience started even before I made the purchase. When you’re buying online, it’s often hard to get a sense of the spatial aspect of products, but Gary, the founder of Waterfield, makes hands-on videos of everything they sell. His video overview gave me the sense of the size and dimensions, and I felt like this was the right product before I’d ever handled it myself.

I wanted a briefcase for my laptop and tablet and a few extras, but I didn’t want a bunch of unnecessary pockets that would complicate storing and finding things. The ZIP matches those criteria perfectly. It’s super sleek, just the right amount of bag and nothing extra.

Now I carry it when I travel, and I put my most valuable things inside. There’s not a bit of waste in the design, which might be a problem if you’re hoping to carry a lot, but it works great for my style.

 

Materials

I’ve ordered and used a lot of Waterfield bags, and this is the first time I’ve strayed from the waxed canvas with grizzly leather (which I’ve loved, and which is still an option for you, but this time I wanted a change).

The ballistic black is a cool synthetic textile. It’s clean but also sturdy and feels like it could take a lot of wear (though admittedly I haven’t had it long enough to verify that). It’s also incredibly water resistant. The leather accents look great with the black, giving it a bit more class. Personally, I like the look, but you can make that call yourself from the pictures.

The front pocket is hidden. The back looks super sleek–all black without significant seams. I just like the visual appeal overall.

 

Traveling with It

The grip on the inside of the shoulder pad clings, so it stays on well. If you want extra security, it’s comfortable wearing across your chest with the brief at your back. And the whole strap is removable, for when you want to be more streamlined. Oh, and it has a strap designed to slide over your luggage handle, making it an easy extra.

The zipper has a watershed design so you can carry your electronics in the rain without worry. I even tested this out: I put a tissue on the inside and then drenched the zipper with my water bottle, but nothing got through. I was surprised and impressed.

When the briefcase is zipped up, it’s thin and doesn’t take up much space. And it’ll even stand up on its own, though not too stably (depending on the weight and position of what’s inside).

The zipper also lets you open the briefcase 180 degrees, so it’ll lie flat on a table. This makes it TSA friendly, ideal for getting quickly through airport security. I’ve found this to be helpful when using the bag as a workstation too. It makes it easier to access things when you can lay it all the way open like that. And when you’re ready to go, you just grab the handles and everything folds to the inside. I love how simple and functional it is.

 

Delightful Details

This second iteration of Waterfield’s ZIP has only gotten more refined. For example, the zipper is positioned to one side, directly above the laptop slot, making it easier to access your primary item.

Another of my favorite UX design features is that you can charge your laptop while it’s still in the bag! They cut out a little notch to accommodate the power cord even while the bag is zipped up. What a clever thing to think of!

Oh, and as usual, Waterfield uses a gold inner liner, which not only looks good but also reflects light really well, making it easier to see your things (unfortunately, this doesn’t apply to the padded parts, which are the hardest places to see things).

 

Where to Put Stuff

On the inside, it has a couple padded pockets for power cords or a mouse. Next to these is another of my favorite features–a dedicated spot for your digital pen, where it won’t get lost.

On the opposite side are two additional padded slots, a larger one for a laptop, and a smaller one for a tablet. There’s also a velcro strap to keep them in place, but that’s a feature I generally don’t bother to use.

Between these two halves, there’s enough room to squeeze an extra shirt or other odds and ends.

The outside has a zipper guarding a pocket that rests flush with the side, but it’s designed to expand to accommodate more stuff if need be. It’s a good spot for your keys, wallet, or emergency floss.

The zippers on both this compartment and the larger one give me confidence that my stuff will never fall out, no matter what kind of turbulence we go through.

 

Conclusion

I’ve gone through several laptop bags, always looking for the optimal solution. The Waterfield ZIP Laptop Brief has been my favorite of the lot, and I’m grateful to have found it.

It’s thin and sleek, has sufficient pockets for what I need, but doesn’t go overboard like a lot of its competitors. It’s simple, functional, and looks great.

Most of all, it’s a bag I love using.

William Ross Travel Bag Review – $319

Hand-crafted for those who live a life on-the-go, the William Ross Travel Bag is designed with a sleek, authentic look that demands attention. Outfitted with full grain leather and durable, weather-resistant canvas, this was something I couldn’t wait to get my hands on. After a few days of using the olive green with tobacco leather model, I am sold.

Delivered with a hand-signed note from, Julene Etzenbach, Founder and CEO of William Ross Travel Bags, I quickly developed a deeper appreciation for the company and bag. Julene launched the company after needing a bag that was travel-friendly, functional, and efficient - meaning, not only was it lightweight, but it could easily fit daily must-have necessities. Needless to say, the Travel Bag was born.

Construction & Function

Made from twill woven wax canvas, one of the first things that caught my eye was the texture of the material. Outfitted to withstand the elements, I had the unfortunate pleasure of getting caught in some Pacific Northwest rain while using this bag. Inside was my laptop, charger, and mouse, which all remained dry as a bone. For users who are new to wax canvas material, William Ross also includes a note regarding its properties and attention for care.

All my daily necessities and still some extra room. 

It’s clear that Julene had travelers in mind when designing this bag. As someone who is constantly switching between my keys, phone, wallet, or headphones, I was instantly attracted to the functionality of this bag. After adjusting the thick, yet malleable, leather shoulder strap to my desired length, I was welcomed by a side pocket that was positioned on the outside of the bag. Being right-handed, I love how user-friendly the side pocket is. I can quickly open and unzip the 9-inch pocket with ease. The last thing anyone wants to do is use two hands to open one pocket while walking. 

Yes, everything is still in there. 

Another unique quality of this side pocket is the design of the flap. Traditionally, buckles or latches accompany messenger bags. While they prove to be secure and look nice at face value, they aren’t always as functional as we need them to be. Instead, this bag features a pin-closure leather flap, positioned on the front pocket, which can effortlessly be released with no more than your thumb and index finger. This has to be the most undervalued asset of the Travel Bag.

Inside the bag is more room than I’ll probably ever use, but, I’m a person who lives by the principle, “It’s better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.” While I do wish there was more organization to the vast open space, I see this as an opportunity for future outings.

One of my favorite aspects of its interior design is the sleek laptop sleeve. While my Microsoft Surface Pro 3 is a bit smaller than other models, the bag’s pocket can fit laptops up to 12-inches. Even the pocket’s placement is on-par with my ideal setup. Located on the inside of the front panel, I never felt my laptop hit my hip while walking, which is usually the case with most messenger bags.

Here's what was inside the main pocket. 

On the back side of the bag are two smaller pockets. Located closest to your body’s hip, their placement does make it a bit awkward when you’re trying to access items on-the-go. Nevertheless, these make for great ‘hidden’ pockets since spectators can’t see them at first glance. Because of this, the two 7-inch pockets are great for small valuables such as credit cards, cash, or passports.  

Aesthetic

Complemented by the water-resistant canvas, full grain leather pieces blend beautifully with the bag to deliver an eye-popping presence. I was personally drawn to this model because of its weathered look and tan appearance. Many travel bags seem to complement a niche demographic, whereas this one is designed for everyone.

From a top-down perspective, the bag is even sleeker when you see it from the front. It is comfortable and didn’t slide off my shoulder while out and about - even while walking at a quick pace. The main pocket features two brass zippers, which is perfect for those moments when you want to zip both to one side or meet in the middle.

These pockets are perfect for valuables. 

The other notable feature is its thick leather handle located on top of the bag. Constructed to fit a variety of hand sizes, it’s one more piece of leather that adds to its overall beauty. The leather-to-canvas ratio is flawless and the entire bag flows, stitch to stitch.   

Conclusion

All in all, the William Ross Travel Bag is an investment. It’s not a bag that you pick up at your local retailer and end up tearing in a year or two. The price tag may seem high, but it’s competitively priced to be the last travel bag you buy. It sets the standard and nearly puts the bag in a class of its own. Ace Marks Wingtip Oxford Cuoio Antique Leather Shoe Review — $320

I had to wait a year for these shoes.

First, I measured my feet with the charts from the site. Then I made my purchase. Ace Marks has a unique business model, which I’ll explain below, but the bottom line is that they don’t warehouse their shoes, so it took a few months before my order was fulfilled.

When the shoes arrived, they fit on my feet, but they felt too snug. Fortunately, Ace Marks has a no-hassle return policy, and they even covered the return shipping. (Just make sure you only walk on carpet during your trial run.) Unfortunately, that meant I had to wait a few more months.

When the second pair arrived, half a size larger, they also felt too snug! I was shooting for the Goldilocks zone—I wanted these to be the perfect fit! So I bit the bullet and returned that pair too.

Fortunately, when there third pair arrived, now a full year from when I began, they fit perfectly. What’s more, my Ace Marks Wingtip Oxfords turned out to be well worth the wait.

 

Breaking in the Leather Soles

This is the first pair of leather-soled shoes I’ve owned.

When I finally walked out the front door, the tiny rocks on the sidewalk pressed into the leather. I could hear the crunch as they ground into the soles. I actually cringed when I felt the micro-tearing. It felt like walking on stained glass, crushing a work of art with each step. (That’s how beautiful the leather is.)

I’d also crossed the point of no return(s), which gave me a little panic attack. At first I thought maybe I’d gone too big, because they had a little play in them, but then sitting in a leather lounge chair and working on my laptop for an hour made me think they might be a little small! It was stressful. I also got a blister on my left heel from wearing them. (Word to the wise: Don’t wear them for an evening out for the first time; give them a couple one-hour jaunts first.)

Now I’ve had them for a couple months, and I feel confident that I got exactly the right size. I just had to break them in a little to realize it. The leather started out stiff, but now it has taken shape, and I can wear them all day, no problem. They’re actually quite comfortable. The wear made a slight crease in the vamp too (a couple inches from the tip), which made them look barely not as good but made them feel WAY more comfortable.

As for the soles, they now look a bit rougher, as you’ll see in the pictures, but they have more texture and sound softer while walking on concrete. They’re also great for dancing—you just glide across the floor wearing them.

 

Taking Care of Them

I wore them to a concert, and when we came out it was raining! This happened a day after my shoe aficionado friend told me never to get them wet. Water makes them more susceptible to wear. It also dries the oils out of the leather. Fortunately, one time didn’t seem to hurt.

I also bought a pair of lasted cedar wood shoe trees from Ace Marks. These help the leather retain its smart shape whenever you’re not wearing them. Shoe trees also wick up the moisture that the leather absorbs from your feet, which increases the longevity.

 

A Well Sourced and Well Crafted Aesthetic

The two people I trust most about shoe fashion gave me opposite advice: One told me my shoes were a classic design that would never go out of style. The other told me to wear them often because they wouldn’t be in style for long. I’m certainly hoping the first is right so that my investment has a long lifespan. I guess time will tell. So far I’ve been getting a lot of compliments.

Every part of the shoe is imported from Italy, 100%. The factory is run by 4th-generation Italian artisans who are basically professional painters. They hand-dye and hand-burnish every pair. Some do more burnishing around the broguing (the pattern of punctured dots) and others less, which means your pair will be unique.

Matching your belt and shoes is crucial, so I also bought a belt from them, and the belt matches my shoes perfectly. They also ship one-size belts, which means I got to be part of the crafting process. I measured and cut off the excess length, punched new holes for the buckle, and then reattached it.

There are two basic shoe-stitching styles. Most shoes use a goodyear, which has a corked bottom, and the stitches are visible on the side. Ace Marks uses the blake flex, which hides the stitching in a seam on the sole (which you can see in the pictures). This makes it look sleeker, more refined. This also adds to the flexibility and comfort, letting it bend more at the ball of the foot. It’s a small thing that adds a lot more comfort.

 

The Business Pitch

I first contacted Ace Marks in 2017, and back then they were a five-person team (bigger, though, now I suppose). I spoke with Julian, who said to me, “We believe luxury is for everybody.”

The company started with a Kickstarter. That means a group of customers bought the product before they were manufactured. This process gathered specific data on the necessary quantities of each style, color, and size, which let Ace Marks manufacture the exact number required without excess, and they still follow that model to an extent. This saves them warehousing expenses (which is why I had to wait so long to get mine—well worth it). And the direct-to-consumer model cuts out middle men. All these savings are then passed along to the customer. You’ll find shoes of the same quality from competing brands for twice or even three times as much.

They also have a buyback program. So for $50, they’ll buy back your used shoes. These go to a charity called Career Gear, designed to help people to rejoin the workforce. These are people who need dress shoes and will use them to fit into new roles.

 

Conclusion

Julian told me, “Don’t be fooled by our price.”

When he encounters doubters online, he dares them to give Ace Marks a shot, which, considering their easy return policy, is not even a gamble. He says once people try them, they end up coming back for multiple pairs.

The Ace Marks Wingtip Oxfords are some of the coolest shoes I’ve ever owned, and I’m already considering which style to try next.

Waterfield COZMO Leather Laptop Bag Review — $369

I love this bag. It’s the sort of accoutrement you can be proud of. It’s goes well with a rugged style, but it’s handsome enough to carry into a board room.

I got Waterfield’s COZMO leather laptop bag as a gift for my brother who’s just starting his professional career. It’s a beauty, which I’ve tried to capture in the pictures. And while it’s an expensive item, it’s also a worthy investment. Because it’s sturdily built and has a classic look, I expect it to last for his entire career and beyond.

Why I Love Waterfield Designs

If you’ve read my backlog, you know I’ve reviewed a few products from Waterfield. They’re based out of San Francisco, CA, and their focus is on bags and carry tech. I keep coming back to them because they continually impress me. I’d feel pretty confident even endorsing items from them that I’ve never seen in person. That’s how reliable they’ve been.

If I had one critique, it’s that they have too many products, making it hard to sort through their offerings and decide. But that also means they probably have THE EXACT product you’re looking for. (As proof of this fact, with their sleevecases, they invite you to send your laptop dimensions so they can make a case that fits exactly! That’s impressive.) So whatever tech you want to carry, they’ve probably already designed a bag for it.

How It Looks

This is the perfect bag for a business exec. It’s beautiful but also super useful. I got the compact version, so that’s what you see featured in the pictures. It’s big enough for a 13″ MacBook, and it has a second spot for an 11″ iPad Pro. They make a bigger version too if you need it.

For most of their products, Waterfield uses waxed canvas or smooth nylon as textiles that supplement the leather. But this bag is uniquely (and beautifully) all leather. This makes it stand out in among its high-class peers.

I love the grizzly leather color. It’s subtly distressed and boasts a simple, rugged perfection, without being a showoff. Also, as with most quality leather products, I expect its texture to improve over time, developing that classic patina. That makes it a good investment. They also have a black version which is much more formal.

Also, the waterproof zipper hides the teeth of the zipper, making it look sleeker. It’s a nice touch aesthetically. It’ll also protect your gear if you’re ever in the rain.

What It’s Like Using It

I design software interfaces for work, which means paying attention to the smallest details of the user experience (UX). And I love a few specific features of the Cozmo’s UX that really stand out.

The first is the golden interior lining (Waterfield uses this on most of their products). It’s light and very reflective, which brightens the interior of your bag and makes it so easy to see things inside. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been grateful for this feature. It’s a small thing that makes a big difference in everyday use. It also has a padded compartment with a divider so it can hold both a laptop and a tablet.

The second way they nailed the UX is the travel strap. This extra strap across the back is designed to slip over the handle of your luggage, making it easy to tote through an airport. That makes the Cozmo the perfect carry-on, containing your electronics as you move through security. Now, to be perfectly candid, when I’m not traveling sometimes I wish I could ditch that extra flap of leather (obsessive minimalism), but it lays flat and I’ve learned to ignore it.

A third thoughtful feature is the piece of plastic in the bottom, which keeps the base firm and wide so that the bag stands up on its own.

The zipper extends even further than the breadth of the top of the bag, making the opening super wide and easy to access. It’s small things like this that make a big difference in the user experience, and it’s a big part of why I appreciate Waterfield Designs so much.

I’m also impressed by the tough construction. The handles are sturdy, thick, and feel great in your hand. I even tried carrying around my 50-lb kettlebell in it, and the bag barely seemed to notice. The walls aren’t reinforced, though, and I left it stuffed with junk for a few days. After that, the mouth of the bag hung open a lot more. So beware that your use will change the shape. If you’d like to keep it as tidy as a file cabinet, only store it with that sort of thing inside.

If you’re on the fence, go watch the video they have about creating a Cozmo bag. It’s impressive. They start with a single piece of leather, which is then measured, cut, and sewn by hand. It’s quality craftsmanship. And the leather is truly beautiful.

E3 Supply Co. Leather Moto Glove Lanyard Review – $40

The E3 Supply Co. Leather Moto Glove Lanyard is a product that solves a problem you didn’t realize you had. I hadn’t thought about the inconvenience that carrying around my motorcycle gloves is until this lanyard eliminated it! This is a great quality-of-life product for any motorcycle rider.

E3 Supply Co. began from a passion for building custom motorcycles, and has now extended to creating killer leather accessories for their riders. This company prides itself on hand making each product from start to finish, all at their headquarters in Brooklyn. As far as companies go E3 is as cool as they come.

I highly recommend following their Instagram, which includes cross-country camper adventures, musical pursuits, and, of course, plenty of leather (and sometimes discounts on said leather!). It’s been my pleasure to get to know David, Erin, and their crew over at E3 over the course of several reviews (with many more to come!).

Leather & Construction

The Moto Glove Lanyard is made with Horween’s famous Chromexcel leather, E3 Supply Co’s leather of choice. Chromexcel is a soft and beautiful leather with a strong reputation. Holding the Chromexcel in place is military grade metal: a single snap rivet, two sliding loops, and tipped with an Hk style rifle sling clip. The leather is cleanly cut and well assembled. 

Function

I used to cram my motorcycle gloves in the back pocket of my jeans if I didn’t have some kind of bag with me. It worked well enough, but wasn’t ideal. I’d need to remove them to sit, and could easily end up forgetting them (as, unfortunately, I’ve been known to do fairly often). The Moto Glove Lanyard is a great alternative.

The function is simple. With the lanyard clipped to the belt loop on your pants, you put your gloves in the lanyard and secure them with the sliding loops. When you need your gloves again, you slide the loops up and grab your gloves. Easy!

The biggest concern I had with the lanyard was that my gloves might not be very secure. I’ve stress tested the hold a bit, swinging the lanyard around and tugging at my gloves. So far I haven’t had any issues! The sliding loops wedge the gloves in nicely.

Another perk to using the Moto Glove Lanyard is that it makes your pair of gloves a single unit. Even if I had a bag or didn’t want my gloves clipped to my pants, using the lanyard keeps them together and makes them easier to quickly grab or find in your bag.

Aesthetic

Chromexcel is a gorgeous leather, and it’s hard to go wrong with a product made with it. The color shifts slightly as the leather is folded and moved. The hardware maintains the sturdy, rugged look that is perfect for a motorcyclist’s gloves.

Conclusion

E3 Supply Co.’s Leather Moto Glove Lanyard is a handy accessory for anyone who frequently uses gloves. It works perfectly as intended, looks nice, and won’t break the bank. Tuff Writer Retro-Click Executive Pen Review Kickstarter Special

In last week’s episode we watched Tuff Writer’s Mini Click and Operator take on the forces of evil and once again send Skeletor crying for his mommy. If you found yourself liking the build of the those pens, but wanted something a little less intimidating and more refined, they’re back with a Kickstarter Campaign that might interest you. Read on for details on the Retro-Click Executive Pen.

Construction

The Retro-Click will be available in a number of metals including Zirconium, Copper and Brass. The model I’m handling is Polished Titanium. This isn’t the David Guetta variety, this is real deal Grade 5 Titanium. With one of the highest strength to weight ratios among metals, this Titanium makes for a smart option for those who want a beefy, yet light pen. This pen features Tuff Writer’s signature 416SS Swiss-machined advancing mechanism. It’s their smoothest mechanism to date, they basically took R. Kelly’s voice, filtered out the creepiness and made a pen. My plebeian tongue can’t even begin to properly explain what that is, so I’ll quote directly from the site:

“What makes this 416SS mechanism so special?”

Mostly the material choice and time consuming manufacturing process refinements. Virtually all high-end pen mechanisms are made from brass and plated (easier and cheaper to manufacture but not as durable as ours), we decided to go nuts and machine it out of 416 stainless steel (a much harder and more durable material). This meant we had to have it Swiss-CNC’d which, while more costly, means we can hold much tighter tolerances (less than .0005″ all day long on the Citizen L-20). The G-Code programming done by our friend’s shop re-traces the race toolpaths to debur all edges, taking more time but it also means that the chrome steel bearing glides smoothly and the mechanism cycles like butter. It’s much more expensive and time consuming to make it this way but it really is pretty awesome. Plus, the 416SS and chrome steel will wear better and last much longer than plated brass. It’s complete overkill for a pen mechanism but hey… if you’re going to make one, might as well make the best.”

The pen also features a tensioned clip and comes with a Fisher Black Medium cartridge, but will accept any Parker style due to the adjustable internal spacer. These pens are all made from start to finish in the United States. The Retro-Click I’m using weighs, including ink,  1.6 oz (40g) and measures just over 5.25” – Expect heavier pens with the other metals.

Function

People often think I can’t find a pen when I’m rummaging through my bag. Little do they know I’m experiencing a mild panic attack trying to choose which of these beauties to sign with.

The Retro-Click offers a much different feel than other Tuff Writer’s I’ve worked with. Where as the Mini-Click in Brass is like plowing a M1 Abrams through a Bloomingdale’s, the Retro-Click is more like cruising in a B29 on a really nice beaded cushion. I prefer this design over the o ring grips on my Mini-Click (2 of the o rings have since disappeared somehow) The circumference of this pen is great and makes gripping it easy. The Fisher cartridges are of course great. Just today my co worker needed a customer to sign off on an invoice and grabbed a cheap Bic that had been sitting in our work truck all night in freezing temps and it wouldn’t write, my Tuff Writer which had ALSO been sitting in the truck wrote like a charm. You know when you grab a pen and do the preliminary circular test doodles? Not anymore.

Aesthetic

Much like Cap’n Crunch, this pen is part of a balanced EDC

The clean, uncluttered lines are just so easy on the eyes. This pen doesn’t get the, “Wow, this pen is solid, can you even take this on a plane?” retort. When customers use the Retro-Click, it’s more of a delayed response after they’ve signed. Something along the lines of, “Hmm…nice pen” And sometimes that’s what you want, understated quality. What I also enjoy is this pen isn’t a presumptions $800 Mont Blanc that you’ll fear taking out of your bag. In Goldeneye when Q gave 007 the grenade pen, I’m pretty sure if the explosive detonated inside of a Tuff Writer, only a wisp of smoke would have exited the barrel and Boris would have still remained invincible.

Had to pull a favor for this shot, Arnie and I go way back. He was my kindergarten sub one semester.

Conclusion

As I pretty much figured, Tuff Writer once again executed a brilliant pen. In a world of card trick Mages, they’re pretty much Alpha Wizards. You can tell they’re passionate to an almost inappropriate degree with writing instruments. If you already have a Tuff Writer, I’m not quite sure you’d need this pen, as it feels pretty similar to their Mini-Click in some respects. The retail on the Titanium Retro-Click is a hefty $150, however through the Kickstarter campaign you can get it for a steal at a $100 pledge, that is definitely worth it.

What could be finer than the rich smell of leather and cigars? I had the upmost pleasure of reviewing and gifting these custom handmade leather cigar cases for my groomsmen and I can say without a doubt that every one of my brothers loved them like I couldn’t have even imagined.

About Loucks Leatherworks

in 2016, David Loucks  set out to buy a new wallet and found himself unhappy with the typical department store offerings. After researching higher quality wallets, David decided to take on the challenge of making his own. Of course, at first attempt, it turned out hideous. He then became obsessed with all things leather. David spent the next two years absorbing everything he could about different types of leather, tanning processes and crafting techniques.

In 2018 David combined his passion for cigars and pipes with his newfound love of leather and created his first cigar case. At the urging of friends and family he created Loucks Leatherworks and began selling the cases online.
It starts with the materials. The highest quality, oil-tanned leather and the strongest thread on the market. Every piece is cut, assembled and stitched by hand. The result is an attractive case that will last . Also what sets Loucks Leatherworks apart is customer service. They personally work with each customer, customizing and personalizing each item to their specifications. They then provide updates and photos throughout the process. Loucks Leatherworks believes to do all this while maintaining a price point that is competitive with mass produced items.

Construction

All cases are made with full-grain, oil-tanned cow leather. All stitching is done with braided polyester waxed thread. Specifically the tiger thread by Ritza. Monogramming is done by laser. In addition to monogramming there is an option for personalized notes on the interior of the product, which is great when the item is intended as a gift. The case’s dimensions are 9” X 3.2”.

Function

This case was designed to perfectly hold two, fifty gauge Churchill size cigars or shorter. The flap is held in place by a stitched holding band.

Aesthetic

This is a very stylish and compact cigar case perfect to throw in your briefcase, overnight bag, glovebox, or even golf bag for that weekend away. The leather is stunning with the pull-up, the smell, and the feel of oil tanned leather.  It is naturally moisture resistant, and extremely durable making it the perfect material to protect expensive hand rolled cigars.

The personalization touches on both the exterior and interior are unique as they add so much character to the piece. I chose a specific cigar inspired quote that reminded me of each gentleman who it was intended for.

Olpr. Leather Goods Co. Pocket Moleskine Journal Cover- $29

In studying the lives of great men, I’ve noticed a common trait: they were all consistent journal writers. I, myself, consider myself an avid and consistent journal writer.

My grandpa kept a journal his entire life. His journal was quite simple. He just kept a small notebook in his pocket of his shirt and jotted down a short description of the things he did and the people he did it with. This is something he did pretty much every day for his entire life.

Whether or not you want your future grandkids to read it or you just want an attractive piece to store some notes or important information, I loved giving these leather journal covers as groomsmen gifts to my brothers. All of the leathers used are the full-grain cowhides sourced from Horween tannery. High grade thread comes in several different colors.

Storing your leather correctly will keep it supple and durable. When leather is stored incorrectly, it becomes stiff and unmovable, making it nearly impossible to work with. Moreover, when stored badly, the leather starts to become brittle, flaky, and dry, which results in a poor-quality finished product.

Instead, when leather is stored well and correctly, it is flexible, soft-to-the-touch, and durable. It won’t develop a bad smell and will remain easy to work with.

Try to prevent wrinkles by laying leather flat or hanging it. Hanging it with acid-free paper will help to keep it in a neutral state - just like how our own skin likes the atmosphere.

Leather is breathable, so think about ensuring that fresh air can get through it. Stale musty air will sit in the material and degrade the leather. If the storage place has fungus, dampness, and/or mold can get into the leather if you are not careful.
